Vet Values Week 9

By now, you should realize which of your teams are gunning for championships and which are preparing for the offseason. That being said, the time to buy veterans has mostly passed. These guys are going to be at peak value and will likely involve you being caught “holding the bag.” There are specific scenarios where I want to make these moves.

Late-Round Dynasty Start-Up Gems

An underrated aspect of Dynasty fantasy football is finding hidden gems. These players can blossom into lineup mainstays or be traded for plus value later. Late rounds are where savvy owners can unearth these valuable assets. Identifying late-round dynasty gems requires research, foresight, and a keen eye for potential. Here are a few things I focus on when looking for these deep treasures.

Preseason Overreactions: Hall of Fame Game Edition

Thursday Night marked a noteworthy night on the calendar for NFL fans across the globe—the first NFL preseason game. It was the first chance to throw in some DFS lineups, the first chance to lose money on the Jets (-1.5) when a missed pass interference call could have saved you (I’m still bitter), and for our purposes, the first chance to see some of these rookies in action. Every preseason we are so excited about anything new that it is easy to overreact. I can still remember last year with everyone concerned over Josh Jacobs playing so many snaps in the Hall of Fame game. Don’t worry about it though, because we here at DFF are here to help you sort out what is an overreaction and what is the actual takeaway.

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers to the Jets

I speak for everyone when I say, it took long enough. This was a move that felt inevitable at one point and then doubtful at another but eventually, the deal was done. I must give credit to the Packers’ front office for the stones it took to hold fast waiting for a deal that had to happen. Their ability to hold got them the best possible return they were ever going to get for Rodgers. The Jets needed that deal to go through as well, given their roster is ready to compete with only Zach Wilson in the quarterback room prior to the trade. Alas, we are not here to pour praise upon Brian Gutekunst (Packers GM), we are here to understand the impact this move has on all of our Dynasty assets.

Garrett Wilson

Who Ya Got? Tee Higgins vs. Amon-Ra St. Brown vs. Garrett Wilson

As the newest ranking team member here at DFF, I have asked myself this question quite a bit over the past couple of weeks: Who should I rank higher? These lead to fantastic conversations in league, text, and social media chats. The back and forth is where some of the richest discussions of fantasy football can occur. In particular, in the Dynasty space where a player’s value could vary depending on if the team is a contender or rebuilding, and also on positional need. Today’s discussion is not easily solved by either of those metrics though. All three of these guys are talented young WRs that work well whether you are contending now or looking at the long-term picture. I would be happy to have a roster with any one of them or even better all three of them but in a startup, where would I go? Let’s dig into these incredibly talented WRs.

Elijah Moore

Rapid Reaction: Elijah Moore to the Cleveland Browns

After an exciting rookie year with the Jets, Elijah Moore was a dynasty darling going into the 2022 season. The drafting of Garrett Wilson was expected to open up the field even more for the talented second-year man out of Ole Miss. Unfortunately for dynasty managers that roster Elijah Moore, the second-year leap was not present. Instead, we were disappointed by a major sophomore slump. His dynasty value took a massive drop off as well as it appeared he was on the outside looking in as far as the Jets offense was concerned. Losing out on slot snaps to the likes of Braxton Berrios. I feared for my Elijah Moore shares if I was going to have to wait for him to get on a second contract just to finally get some return on my investment. On Wednesday, March 22nd, Elijah Moore was traded to the Cleveland Browns with a pick exchange.

Where We Went Wrong: Zach Wilson & Jalen Hurts

NFL teams every single year find themselves in one of two camps at this time. Those that have their Quarterback for the future and those that do not. Those that don’t are frequently tasked with drafting a quarterback, one of the most challenging parts of a General Manager’s job in the NFL. Over the years we have had plenty of decisions that get questioned for years to come. Ken O’Brien over Dan Marino or Peyton Manning over Ryan Leaf, the differences these selections make are truly franchise-altering decisions. This process is mimicked often in the Dynasty Football space as we sit and try to evaluate the talent and project how they will perform at the NFL level. Longevity is an important trait of Quarterbacks taken in the first round of our Superflex rookie drafts like NFL teams. We may tend in the Fantasy circles to like mobile Quarterbacks a bit more than the NFL thanks to their rushing floor but mostly want the same things NFL teams want in signal callers. Sometimes we hit, Andrew Luck was exactly what we thought he was coming out of college. Sometimes we miss though. Today’s two cases we will discuss that we as a community were wrong on.

Early ’23 Rookie QB Rankings: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly – Pt. 3

We’ve officially passed the NFL draft declaration date and we know who exactly our fresh batch of rookie picks will be. That means no more Twitter speculation and narratives about who will declare. (Looking at you Stroud.) Sure it’s a little early to rank without draft capital. Luckily, we have plenty of numerical data from the regular season we can look at using KPIs based from DFF’s very own Chris Miles. Using the points from his model and tales from the tape, I’ll break down this highly touted rookie class by discussing The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of each prospect.

Week 5 Starts and Sits

Goff exploded last week against Seattle throwing for 378 yards and four touchdowns leading him to be the fifth highest scoring QB this year. What a difference a year can make! And in a game where he was missing Amon-Ra St. Brown, DJ Chark, and D’Andre Swift nonetheless. It was an incredible show, but now he must take his Lions into New England, where Bill Belichick is known for making it tough on the opposing team’s best players.

Fantasy Stock Up, Stock Down: New York Jets

Welcome back to the “Fantasy Stock Up, Stock Down” series (offseason edition). The big free agency splash moments are all but over at this point, and the NFL Draft is approaching quickly. We, as dynasty managers, need to be evaluating these offseason transactions and thinking about our roster adjustments every day. Who are we going to target in rookie drafts? Who are we going to go out and trade for? Who are we willing to give up in return? Will you go all in this season to bring home a championship? Or should you go young and prepare for the future? There’s so much to think about before September. The “offseason edition” of this series is an early look at whose stock is up and whose stock is down as we head into draft season. We will break down each NFL team one by one. Today is all about the New York Jets.

State of FFPC Dynasty: Cut Trade Keep

Hello FFPC fans! It has been a while since I wrote about the state of the Dynasty landscape. I took my lumps in the championship round, failing to win a single ship out of 12 teams that made the dance. All in all, I did just a little better than break-even, which I consider a loss considering the amount of time I put in. I also had Ja’Marr Chase (WR – CIN) on only two of those teams, where his Week 17 performance swung many league titles across the hobby. But c’est la vie as I always say.
