Phillip Lindsay: 2020 Dynasty Profile

After joining the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2018, Phillip Lindsay quickly wrestled the starting running back job away from fellow rookie Royce Freeman. Lindsay surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in each of his first two seasons while scoring 17 total TDs. In March, Phillip Lindsay’s hopes of rushing for 1,000 yards in a third straight season were effectively dashed when the Broncos signed Melvin Gordon to a 2 year, $16 million contract. Since entering the league in 2015, Melvin Gordon has functioned as an all-purpose workhorse, averaging over 16 carries per game and tallying at least 55 targets in four straight seasons. Assuming Gordon is given a similar role in Denver, the workload for Phillip Lindsay will be dramatically reduced.

UDFA Unraveled: QBs

As the post-draft hype begins to fade and teams start looking for any asset on the waiver wire that they believe can help bolster their roster, everyone is looking for that next edge. In a recent argument on @TaleofTwoRivals, we bantered quickly about the value of UDFAs in a dynasty league but reached no real conclusion. I began to think of who can be this year’s, Preston Williams. Who can take the mantle of Tony Romo, Arian Foster, and a few others and carry a team to the next level? Who can you buy low on? Who might be on the waiver wire? What follows is a case study of UDFAs who have finished in the top 24 of their position in a fantasy season, how their team responded to that success (were replaced via free agency, the draft, etc.) and what happened in the following year.

Dynasty Outlook: Dan Arnold

While Arnold appears to be a very good pass catcher, he is on the lighter side, at just 222 pounds. His limited impact in the blocking game may not allow him to be an every-down type of tight end, but he could be a touchdown machine like he was in college. Arnold has only played four games with the Cardinals, and his offensive snap rate increased each of the last three games, finishing with 44% in Week 17. This shows that Kingsbury has every intention of getting him involved.

Golden Tate: 2020 Dynasty Profile

Golden Tate finished five straight seasons with over 100 targets prior to being traded to the Giants in 2019 and dealing with a fading Eli Manning and rookie quarterback Daniel Jones. From 2014-2017 Tate had four straight seasons of 90+ catches and was a top 25 receiver each year. He’s also one of five players since 2013 with over 20% target share ever year, below are the others.

David Njoku: A Goliath Rebirth?

Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku has requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns via his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. The veteran sports agent and notorious bare-knuckles negotiator has almost certainly taken public a request made to the team shortly after another former first-rounder from the same position, Hayden Hurst demanded a trade from the Ravens to the Falcons earlier this year. Poetically and characteristically, Rosenhaus aired his demand for his client’s freedom from the league’s most unstable franchise on the eve of Independence Day. Timing is also of the essence because training camps open in a mere three weeks’ time.

Say “No” to the Veto! Ban the Trade Veto

Perhaps its fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution — but from trade vetoes. The capability to veto trades was originally designed to prevent collusion. Collusion is defined as illegal or secret cooperation or conspiracy; especially to cheat or deceive others. The veto system allows owners to cast a vote if they feel a trade is unfair. If enough votes are cast against the trade, then it will be canceled. Let’s take a step back real quick. “If they FEEL it’s unfair”. See, that’s the thing, feelings are not facts. Feelings can be deceiving, and they don’t count for much when it comes to determining complicity.

Dynasty WR Buys: Mid Range Part 3

I’m back to the dynasty side of writing with a series on veteran dynasty buys at the wide receiver position. I started off looking at three buy-high receivers. Then, I moved into the mid-range of dynasty value, beginning with a detailed dive into Tyler Boyd and Michael Gallup. As I referenced in that piece, I believe that the mid-range of dynasty WRs is a value goldmine with so many undervalued players in that group. It’s such a deep and wonderful group that I needed to discuss two further players, Jarvis Landry and Christian Kirk. Now, I want to go into two more players in Brandin Cooks and N’Keal Harry. This area of dynasty drafts and value is the best way to exploit the current dynasty market. I’m currently recommending the strategy of grabbing early running backs in dynasty startups since there’s so much wide receiver value later on. On that note, I have two more mid-range players that are also excellent dynasty buys. Let’s jump into them! Brandin Cooks Brandin Cooks has a track record of fantasy success. Until 2019, he was a top fantasy receiver, providing constant value for his dynasty owners. Even though Cooks has bounced around teams, he’s found success everywhere he’s gone. The NFL’s big news of Carolina Day is New England’s acquisition of former Panthers QB Cam Newton. On June 28, 1776, American patriots rebuffed a British attack on Charleston harbor. The key to success was a remarkably resilient fort built of palmetto logs that repelled cannonballs. Cam Newton and his fantasy football value have been similarly under siege for nearly two years. He has an opportunity to silence critics and achieve ultimate victory with the New England Patriots in 2020.

If you’ve been hiding under a rock this week, Cam Newton has signed with the New England Patriots. There was plenty of pre-draft speculation that Belichick would sign Newton prior to the NFL draft, but his patience has paid off. Stefon Diggs is an Underrated Dynasty Asset

We’ve established that Diggs has the talent and opportunity to lead the Bills receivers next year. We’ve also established that Diggs has a track record of being consistently fantasy-relevant over the past four years. He’s only 26 years old. He’s now the clear number one option after leaving Minneapolis, where he competed with Adam Theilen for targets. If Diggs firmly grasps that number one role, a 1,000 yard, 8 touchdown season may only be a floor. Things are lining up better than most are expecting for Diggs to have his biggest season yet. With his ADP dropping, now is the time to get Stefon Diggs. He’s the perfect player to seek out for a middle of the road team looking to take that next step or a contender looking to put themselves over the top!

Deebo Samuel: Injury Reaction

Referred to as a Jones fracture, Deebo fractured part of his fifth metatarsal and will be requiring surgery. According to @FBInjuryDoc on Twitter, the recovery time for this injury is likely 8-12 weeks–with 10 weeks being the preferred timetable. This 10-week timetable theoretically puts Samuel on track to be ready for week 1, assuming no setbacks. Trent Taylor, Deebo’s teammate, endured the same injury last year. While Taylor was expected to be back in under 8 weeks until he required a second surgery. Unfortunately, this second surgery caused an infection causing Taylor to miss the entire 2019 season. Let us hope there are no complications and Samuel can return to the field ASAP.

Dynasty WR Buys: Mid-Range

The Bengals drafted Boyd with the 55th overall pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. In his rookie year, Boyd flashed as the number three receiver behind veterans A.J. Green and Brandon LaFell. Boyd played mostly from the slot and complemented the existing pair of outside receivers. While he wasn’t fantasy relevant, he showed enough as a rookie to provide considerable dynasty optimism going into 2017.
