Six members of the DFF Army got together to conduct an early Superflex 2022 Rookie Mock Draft, everyone doubled up on teams to make it reflect a 12-team league and, for fairness of randomly generated draft spot we decided to pick in a snake format, rather than the typical fixed order that rookie drafts are conducted in. I will also provide some insights on the picks based on my personal analysis.

Devy Discourses: The Race to 2022 QB1 – Corral vs Willis

The 2022 NFL rookie class is underwhelming. Two of the top-three quarterbacks who were the most valuable 2022 eligible prospects have had their value drop close to nil with Spencer Rattler and Kedon Slovis. The remaining option, Sam Howell has retained his value over time however many, including myself, view him as a limited prospect. The underlying reason for this class being below-average compared to other recent classes is not because every player in the class of 2022 will be a bust. The reason why the 2022 NFL rookie class is underwhelming is that we have too low of a confidence interval on the likelihood of an individual player being a viable fantasy option consistently.

Devy Players of the Week

Romeo Doubs is a senior wide receiver for the Nevada Wolf Pack. He stands 6’2 and 200 lbs. which if validated at the NFL Combine represents a receiver that can play the slot or on the outside. Doubs will not test off the charts athletically at the NFL Combine, but he is likely to hit all of the athletically-based thresholds we like to see. Although coming out of Nevada is not ideal for a prospect, the Mountain West has brought up incredible players like Marshall Faulk, Nate Burleson, Keenan McCardell, Doug Martin, and most recently Davante Adams.

Devy Breakouts: October 2021

Xavier Worthy is a 6’1” and 160 lbs. burner who was the eighth-rated wide receiver in the 2021 class, and a top-75 player overall. Worthy was originally committed to Michigan, but when Steve Sarkisian accepted the Texas head coaching job he flipped Worthy, who he recruited hard during his time at Alabama. By flipping Worthy’s commitment, Sarkisian made it a point to get instant production from his first hand-picked prospect.

Against The Spread: Week 5

The Buffalo Bills have the best scoring differential in the NFL through Week 4, with a positive 90 points difference. Do not read too much into this because their last three opposing quarterbacks have been Davis Mills, Jacoby Brissett, and Taylor Heinicke. The Cardinals have the second-highest scoring differential in the NFL, with a positive 55 difference. At the other end of the spectrum, we have the Falcons, Texans, Dolphins, Jets, and Lions who all have poor scoring differentials. The scoring differential has a very strong correlation of an R-squared value of 0.79 compared to games won.

Against The Spread: Week 4

The most exciting game of the week was when the Chargers traveled to Kansas City for a matchup between two of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL. Justin Herbert came out of the gates strong, building an early 14-0 lead in the first half. The comeback that was expected from Patrick Mahomes, was delivered in the third quarter with consecutive passing scores to take a 17-14 lead. The fourth quarter of this game may have been the most exciting 15 minutes of football this season.

Devy Breakout Player of the Month: September

This is a player that many people expected to break out as a true freshman, but not many people believed that he would be able to do so this early on. For September’s devy breakout player of the month, we have a true freshman running back at a blue-blood Power 5 school who is already a top-10 running back in raw scrimmage yardage. This player is averaging 10.6 yards per touch, and despite getting 20% of the team’s opportunities, is still making up 26% of their team’s total yardage. They are also handling the load when it comes to scoring, making up 38% of their team’s offensive touchdowns. Overall, he has a 29% adjusted dominator rating (adjusted from 50% yardage and 50% touchdowns to 80% yardage and 20% touchdowns) and is averaging 2.9 adjusted yards per team play. These metrics are good for being 24th and seventh in the nation, despite just being a freshman.

The year is 2021 and as Charles Darwin theorized, we must adapt or die. This is a theory that we are applying to our Against the Spread series for the 2021 season. In this series we will look at the Sunday slate, we are going to identify key games, and provide insights on why each bet could be the wise move.  As we discover trends through the season we will be able to make more determined analyses on specific picks. To go along with matchups and trends, we will look at key fantasy players who have the most beneficial or detrimental matchups. Finally, we will provide a weekly underdog of the week as well as a potential parlay to win big.
