DFF Draft Coverage: Jaelan Phillips to the Dolphins

Jaelan Phillips is a story where potential finally met opportunity and production in 2020. Phillips began his collegiate career with accolades and notoriety as he was ranked a top-three recruit in the nation in 2017, even ahead of Chase Young. He chose to stay close to home and attend UCLA, where a string of bad injury luck awaited him. Phillips started in four of the seven games he played as a freshman (21 tackles, seven for loss, with 3.5 sacks) but struggled through an ankle injury and suffered a concussion. In 2018, he suffered a wrist injury when he was hit by a car and later suffered another concussion during the season. He gutted through four games compiling 20 total tackles, with one TFL and one sack.

DFF Draft Coverage: Jaylen Waddle to the Miami Dolphins

Jaylen Waddle has the speed that an opposing defense must account for pre-snap on every play of the game. He immediately enters the league as one of the fastest WRs in the world. He has all the tools to become a number one WR in the NFL. Waddle should be the second or third WR selected in dynasty rookie drafts. He will be a mid-late first-round pick in SF leagues and an early-mid first-round pick in 1QB leagues. Waddle also offers value in the return game, for owners whose leagues provide points for return yardage and return TDs.

2021 NFL Draft Preview: Team Needs Picks 16 – 20

This is the fourth article of the team needs series covering teams picking 16 through 20. Obviously, free-agency acquisitions will make a major difference as to who teams will draft. These predictions and needs will therefore change as we acquire more information. However, many are of the thinking that it’s better to supplement with free-agency and build through the draft. Teams want to get young assets and have them develop cohesion with the team. Therefore, the draft is often more predictive of a team’s long-term confidence in a player.

2021 NFL Draft Preview: Team Needs Picks 1 – 5

As I look at mock drafts, my eyes naturally gravitate towards fantasy-relevant players which led to the idea for this series. I decided to attack the needs of each team from top to bottom. This is the first article and covers the teams picking in the top five of the NFL Draft. Obviously, free-agency acquisitions will make a major difference as to who teams will draft. Dynasty Running Backs to Sell

Today I’ll be giving you three running backs to sell in this one, from now throughout the offseason. Each RB comes with a different situation and reasoning for getting out now before it is too late. However, I preface this advice with minding the fact that each fantasy league and situation are different. So use this article as more of a weight on the proverbial trade scale and not the determining factor for making any moves in your leagues. I try to analyze each of my teams and my leagues before determining whether to make any offseason moves. But, for the most part, I normally make offers leading up to draft time. If you can get a deal completed a little ahead of the offseason hype then it will greatly benefit you. Try to push some of the following players, but always remember: only sell players for the right price. You don’t want to shoot yourself in the foot before next season gets here. David Montgomery Finishing sixth overall at the running back position was nowhere near where people expected Montgomery to land in points scored by the end of the season. I advise you to take that end of year push that he had and cash in his value at its peak. Teammate Tarik Cohen will return in 2021 to siphon away the passing work that Monty enjoyed in his absence. Montgomery was just a low-end RB2 through the first half of the season but was boosted by his Week 12 through Week 16 numbers, as he was the

Free Agent Focus: Allen Robinson

It’s been a while since I last wrote an article for DFF. Between work, moving interstate, dealing with the rescheduling of a wedding, and the general hustle and bustle of life, I’ve been short on time over the past few months. Or that is what I have told myself.

It’s very easy to put something off, especially when you know there will be some effort involved, and sometimes you can let the excuses win. But I want to start 2021 right, and it’s time for me to start pulling my weight once again. The amazing team here at DFF has been smashing out content week after week, and I am fired up to get back to contributing regularly.

Deshaun Watson Trade: Real or Rumor?

I know that everyone’s eyes are on the NFL Playoffs right now. We just capped off an exciting Super Wild Card weekend, and we have three weeks of football left to go. However, even though these playoff games affect dynasty value, there’s no bigger dynasty story right now than a potential Deshaun Watson trade. Let’s jump into the full story!

Rookie Stock Market: Week 15

Congratulations! I hope this applies to a lot of y’all, as I believe my readers are educated and smart fantasy players who have made it to the finals of their leagues. My overall percentage of teams in the playoffs is down compared to normal, but 2020 has been nothing but normal right? Like last week, we had several big-time rookie performances in Week 15. Jalen Hurts was the top-scoring player across all positions, and Justin Herbert was QB6. D’Andre Swift was RB10, Jonathan Taylor was RB15, Brandon Aiyuk was WR6, CeeDee Lamb WR11, and Justin Jefferson WR16. So if you rostered and played these rookies, you’re happy you did! Like the past two weeks, in addition to the normal stuff I cover here, I will be adding a Week 16 Playoff Spin for each rookie I touch on today. Let’s get into it!

Rookie Stock Market: Week 13

This marks two weeks in a row that Cam Akers has made it into the risers. That’s a good look, especially for a rookie that had a relatively rocky start to the season. Week 13 brought Akers a season-high in total yardage, touches, and snap %. In addition to the increased workload, Week 13 marks the third week in a row that Akers has found his way into the end zone. The increase in usage could be attributed to Darrell Henderson Jr. briefly leaving the game with a knee injury, but nonetheless, it is great to see the second-round pick finally get a real workload and look good doing so. I think what is most noteworthy from Week 13 is the usage of Malcolm Brown. Despite Henderson going down with a knee injury, Malcolm Brown saw a season-low in snap rate with just 16%. Does this mark the end of an era? Has Sean McVay finally realized Brown has no juice? Did he finally take a look at box scores and see Malcolm Brown’s longest run on the year is for 19 yards? I think the past few weeks, Akers has proven his worth, and McVay and company are ready to truly get him involved in the offense.

AFC East: Divisional Nuggets

Two months ago I got excited about Gesicki being a top ten tight end in fantasy. I also got excited that he was the only tight end in the AFC East that I wanted to talk about. His next four finishes:13.6, 0, 1.3, 6.7. Whoops. Now to the last four games: 6, 8.3, 11.5, 23.8. Alright! He’s back! Well, sort of…it’s clear that Gesicki is a talented player. However, he got fantasy players excited last year when he got hot down the stretch. What are two things in common between this stretch and the one last year? An injury to Preston Williams. I’m just not sure he is going to demand enough targets each game as the third option in that offense for fantasy managers to be happy. I’ll be looking to move Gesicki in the offseason for a better tight end.

Rookie Stock Market: Week 11

We are only a week or two away from the playoffs depending on your league. We’ve witnessed lots of splash weeks from this rookie class along with plenty of flops. Counting on rookies on a week to week basis is a gamble but can often pay off. I have monitored the ebb and flow of this rookie class and I hope to have you prepared to make an informed start or sit situation come playoff time. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s see how some of the rookies fared this past weekend.

Shooters shoot and I’ve taken my fair share, and today I will admit to an airball I took. Giving dynasty advice is essentially just making an educated guess, but we still need to admit when we’re wrong. I still like my process and trust my rookie evaluation process, but I’m ready to admit I have swung and missed. I’ll dive right into my miss and touch on some other rookies below.

We did it, fam! We’re officially halfway through the ridiculous 2020 fantasy football season. It has been a crazy one, with plenty of drama and anxiety over rescheduled games and all the other headaches that have come with this football season’s tussle with COVID-19. We have had players from the 2020 rookie class we have been able to count on, and some that have fallen on their faces and cost our teams precious points. Let’s take a look at what happened in Week 8 and how we can use that information to help teams down the stretch of this unique season.

IDP Wrap Up: Week 8

WHAT WE LEARNED THIS WEEK The Miami Dolphins did it again. A few weeks after dominating the 49ers, the Dolphins destroyed Jared Goff and company to beat the Rams 28-17. The defense and special teams produced two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, two sacks, and two touchdowns to lead Miami to victory. Players who made important IDP contributions include Eric Rowe, Jerome Baker, Kyle Van Noy, Xavien Howard, Andrew Van Ginkel, and Christian Wilkins. Philadelphia had a bittersweet night beating the Cowboys in week eight. On the night, the offense did not look great. However, the defense took care of business, racking up four sacks, two fumbles, a safety, and a touchdown in the game. There is a long way to go, but keep in mind that if your fantasy team makes a deep playoff run, Dallas plays the Eagles in championship week 16 this season. Philly stars of the game were T.J. Edwards, Rodney McLeod, and Brandon Graham.   On the other side of the state, Pittsburgh’s defense also produced an amazing game to win in Baltimore on Sunday. Over the 60 minutes of play, the Steeler D created four sacks, two interceptions, two fumbles, and a touchdown. If you roster Pittsburgh defenders like Stephon Tuitt, Robert Spillane, Minkah Fitzpatrick, et al., you are feeling quite satisfied this year.  TOP PLAYER PERFORMANCES Robert Spillane – LB –PITTSBURGH STEELERS Mentioned in this article a few weeks ago as the replacement for Devin Bush, Spillane paid immediate dividends by producing the top IDP performance of week eight on Sunday. His line included 11 total tackles, a TFL, a fumble recovery,

From Ewa Beach to South Beach: It’s Tua Time!

On a dreary Tuesday morning in the Boston area on this date October 20, 2020, news broke that changed not just the state of the New England Patriots, or the AFC East, but the entire NFL. Heading into a Week 8 bye, the Miami Dolphins have named Tua Tagovailoa their starting quarterback. Tagovailoa saw his first game action during a two-minute drill, in which the Dolphins handled the New York Jets with little to no opposition. The Miami Dolphins have been searching for a long-term answer at quarterback ever since the retirement of Dan Marino, and now there is optimism on South Beach, the cause of this optimism: It’s Tua Time.

Week 5: IDP Wrap Up

The Ravens’ defense did it again. This week, at home versus the Bengals, Baltimore dominated on defense from the opening snap.
