Dynasty Running Backs to Sell

Today I’ll be giving you three running backs to sell in this one, from now throughout the offseason. Each RB comes with a different situation and reasoning for getting out now before it is too late. However, I preface this advice with minding the fact that each fantasy league and situation are different. So use this article as more of a weight on the proverbial trade scale and not the determining factor for making any moves in your leagues.

I try to analyze each of my teams and my leagues before determining whether to make any offseason moves. But, for the most part, I normally make offers leading up to draft time. If you can get a deal completed a little ahead of the offseason hype then it will greatly benefit you. Try to push some of the following players, but always remember: only sell players for the right price. You don’t want to shoot yourself in the foot before next season gets here.

David Montgomery

Finishing sixth overall at the running back position was nowhere near where people expected Montgomery to land in points scored by the end of the season. I advise you to take that end of year push that he had and cash in his value at its peak. Teammate Tarik Cohen will return in 2021 to siphon away the passing work that Monty enjoyed in his absence. Montgomery was just a low-end RB2 through the first half of the season but was boosted by his Week 12 through Week 16 numbers, as he was the first overall RB in scoring through that time.

If you owned David Montgomery there is a good chance you rode him through the playoffs while he destroyed bottom of the barrel rush defenses, against teams that were non-contenders. I am not saying that David Montgomery isn’t a good player or a player who won’t have value through the next few years, but his value will never be higher than it is right now. The previous two years of disappointment had led people to give up on him. Additionally, the fact that he is in the backfield of a team that normally struggles on offense leads me to want to trade him. Simply put, this is the best time to cash in on what David Montgomery did for you this past season. Give another manager false hopes with a running back who faces an uphill battle to repeat his production from last year.

Alvin Kamara

Before you scoff and exit the article, I will say this sell is dependent on the Saints’ QB position next year. Drew Brees is retiring this offseason and what the Saints do at the position will determine most of Kamara’s value. In the past four seasons, including his rookie season, he has dominated in the passing game with at least eighty-one receptions each year. However, each of those years he also had either Drew Brees or Teddy Bridgewater checking the ball down to him when needed. This season’s sample size of Taysom Hill at QB has proven that he did not offer much in the way of check-downs. The only reason Kamara reached such a high reception total this season was due to the team being without healthy receivers most of the year.

Without Michael Thomas most of the year and capping the year off with a six-touchdown performance to boost his end of season scoring finish, Kamara is starting to age as a running back. Although his huge performance came on fantasy championship weekend, Kamara is someone I would look to sell for multiple rookie firsts or a first-rounder and a stud rookie running back from this past 2020 draft. Capitalize while you can. Anticipating changes to come in a dynasty league is something all managers have to do. Kamara is an elite talent so only sell him for worthwhile value to fill multiple holes in your team.

Myles Gaskin

Gaskin was a great story for the 2020 season, filling in for managers when they needed decent RB production while navigating injuries and covid-19 designations with high profile players. Unfortunately, Gaskin is on a team in the midst of rebuilding mode. The Dolphins have their future quarterback, but now it is time to surround him with weapons in order for the team to succeed. The Miami defense is going to be very good. While Tua got ample game experience this past season, I am sure the team is looking to lean on the run game while allowing Tua to acclimate more in the NFL.

Gaskin is the perfect candidate to trade to an RB needy team for their second-round pick in a rookie draft loaded with talent to build your roster. However, you must do this before the team adds to their backfield because as soon as that happens Gaskin’s value vanishes and you are stuck with a handcuff to the newly-added free agent or rookie that Miami brings in.

To stay in contention in your leagues, avoid getting sentimental and holding on to RBs that will plummet in value. Montgomery is not going to return to this form ever again in his career, Kamara is not going to have Drew Brees ever again, and Gaskin will be replaced like most seventh-round running backs on rebuilding NFL teams. Get ahead of it by trading them now for maximum value so you can continue winning your leagues.
