Countdown to Kickoff: Day 1

This will be the final article of twelve, counting down the days until we can once again sit and watch this sport that we love (and dominate our fantasy leagues in the process). Each article will have a numeric theme, which will also count down as each day ticks the calendar. In this piece, I’ll be discussing the top-10 players who will increase their dynasty value in the 2021 NFL season. So, without further ado, I am thrilled to bring you DFF’s 2021 “Kickoff Countdown”!

DFF Redraft League: Drafting from the Two Spot

Welcome, #DFFArmy to Dynasty Football Factory’s Redraft season kickoff! This year looks to be even more competitive than last year as we added two teams to the league, bringing the total number to 14. Not only did we grow the league size, but we expanded rosters by adding a flex position as well, which makes hitting in the mid to late rounds even more important than normal.

Rookie Face Plants

Death, taxes, and analysts propping up rookie face plants. These second-year receivers are likely presented as premium buy-low players. Players that are still young and have perceived upside. But does buying rookie face plants work? Is it a viable strategy? We must first define what a face plant is. For this study, we will consider 7.5 PPR (per game) or less a face plant. This leaves us with a sample size of 229 receivers (all data of drafted wide receivers since 2010).  Of those 229, only 13 went on to achieve at least a top 24 positional finish and only nine were able to achieve more than one. That’s a staggering 5.7% achieving at least a top 24 positional finish and 3.9% achieving more than one. Not exactly odds that we would want to bet on, let alone trade away rookie draft capital to acquire.

When Is It Time to Rebuild?

As an Eagles fan, I know how fickle NFL success can be. One minute you’re high off your first Super Bowl win. Your head coach and young quarterback are rising stars in the NFL. Then you whiff on a few draft picks, retain a few players past their prime, and a couple of years later you’re dead last in the worst division in football. Your coach is fired, your quarterback is traded, and the once talent-rich roster is almost unrecognizable.

Sam Darnold to Carolina: Rapid Reaction

The 2021 offseason has been an eventful one, especially for the quarterback position. Carson Wentz, Matthew Stafford, and Jared Goff have changed teams. Dak Prescott has received a massive contract extension. Deshaun Watson has threatened a holdout. San Francisco has traded up in the NFL Draft to secure their franchise quarterback. Now the Carolina Panthers have stolen the spotlight, trading a 2021 sixth-round pick, a 2022 second-round pick, and a 2022 fourth-round pick for New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold.

Free Agent Focus: Allen Robinson

Free Agent Focus: Allen Robinson

It’s been a while since I last wrote an article for DFF. Between work, moving interstate, dealing with the rescheduling of a wedding, and the general hustle and bustle of life, I’ve been short on time over the past few months. Or that is what I have told myself.

It’s very easy to put something off, especially when you know there will be some effort involved, and sometimes you can let the excuses win. But I want to start 2021 right, and it’s time for me to start pulling my weight once again. The amazing team here at DFF has been smashing out content week after week, and I am fired up to get back to contributing regularly.

Offseason Preparation: Hidden Gems

Only a few contenders are left in leagues vying for the championship, but regardless of the position your dynasty team is in, the constant drive to improve your team should never end even if the season is coming to a close. Each year, in each league some players stop paying attention as soon as they miss the playoffs, and they wonder why they lose year after year. The NFL doesn’t stop just because you didn’t make it to your fantasy football playoffs.

Looking Ahead to Week 14

At this point, we’re looking ahead to the fantasy playoffs in most leagues. For this column, I will assume that you need these players to win in Week 14 specifically. However, I might mention Week 15 or 16 matchups if relevant. Also, I hope you don’t play fantasy football in Week 17, and I won’t worry about that week whatsoever. I won’t limit myself to any specific number of players or force myself to choose specific positions, outside of a few exceptions. Each week, I’ll provide one look ahead streamer at quarterback and D/ST, as those positions are easy to predict every week. Quarterback streaming mostly comes from the opposing defense and D/ST from the opposing offense, and we know those schedules ahead of time.

I’ve listed the players in the order I would add them to my roster. Let’s jump right in!

Week 8 Early Game Storylines

I love writing these storyline pieces. I will go through the games and discuss one dynasty-relevant storyline per team that I’m excited to see. Usually, I’ll split the games into two sets, covering the early games in one story and the later games in another. Also, I’ll do a special spotlight on the Thursday night game from time to time, as that’s a midweek contest. I like to go into more detail for that game, just for a change of pace.

This piece will give you something specific to look for in each contest, which I hope helps you enjoy the games even more. We all play fantasy football to enhance our enjoyment of football, and I’m trying to add to that sense of happiness here. Fun is the most essential part of this hobby for all of us, including me.

I’ve listed the home team first for each game to keep things organized. I won’t waste any more time, so let’s jump straight in!

Looking Ahead to Week 9

In this weekly article, JKarp looks ahead to the following week. He’ll point out a few players below 40% owned on ESPN who have strong matchups next week that you can pick up ahead of time to beat the waiver run. He also helps you get ahead of breakouts that could happen in the current week, as predicting breakouts is the best way to save your FAAB budget.

Week 7 Early Game Storylines

I love writing these weekend storyline pieces. I will go through the games and discuss one dynasty-relevant storyline per team that I’m excited to see. Usually, I’ll split the games into two sets, covering the early games in one story and the later games in another. In this article, I’ll look at the seven 1 PM games. This piece will give you something specific to look for in each contest, which I hope helps you enjoy the games even more.

Sleeper Series: Chris Herndon

After writing my redraft team breakdown series, I decided to start a new series as we approach the 2020 fantasy season. Every week, or probably more often than that, I’m going to bring you one fantasy sleeper representing a massive value in 2020 redraft leagues. Now, I want to get into a potential late-round tight end breakout. Chris Herndon provides insane upside in 2020, and he’s going relatively unnoticed in drafts. Let me tell you why he might be worth selecting in 2020.

Post-Guice Washington Backfield

The Post-Guice Washington Dynasty Backfield

Recently, I wrote a quick, free dynasty profile on Derrius Guice. In that article, I covered Guice’s dynasty value after his recent release and how to handle Guice moving forward. Honestly, I’m tired of talking about Guice, since there’s a good chance he never plays another NFL down. However, Guice leaves behind a massive hole in the Washington backfield, which somebody will fill. Let’s go through their depth chart, player-by-player, and discuss each option in dynasty terms.

Sleeper Series Jamison Crowder

Sleeper Series: Jamison Crowder

After writing my redraft team breakdown series, I decided to start a new series as we approach the 2020 fantasy season. Every week, or probably more often than that, I’m going to bring you one fantasy sleeper representing a massive value in 2020 redraft leagues. All the links to previous articles are at the bottom of the article. In the first article, I detailed my methodology behind this series, so go back and read that piece if you haven’t yet! Now, I want to take a look at Jamison Crowder. My friend @DocFFN recently wrote a free dynasty profile on Crowder, but I wanted to look at Crowder’s redraft prospects. I also wanted to take more of a long-form approach, as the dynasty free profiles are quick-hitters. Anyway, Crowder might play for the hapless Jets, but I think he deserves some attention as a sleeper for 2020 PPR redraft leagues. Let’s get into why.

#TomBomb: New York Jets

What we’ve seen over and over again in this league is that teams seem to have the most success when they can capitalize on a rookie quarterback treaty. Coupling this reality with one just as obvious is the fact that Darnold has had some pretty unimpressive weapons throughout his time in New York. This is still a work in progress. But, make no mistake about it, progress has been made. While the loss of Robby Anderson hurts, the addition of Breshad Perriman coupled with the drafting of Denzel Mims should more than make up for said departure. Also, worth noting is both Bell’s second year in the system as well as (finger’s crossed) the return of Chris Herndon at tight end.

2020 rookie busts part two

2020 Rookie Busts Part Two

The 2020 rookie class was a loaded group that had dynasty owners’ attention for years. I’ve written about the class three separate times: before the NFL Draft, live during the NFL Draft, and about a month ago. I’ve included all the links to those previous series at the bottom of the page. However, in those articles, I focused on the rookies from a redraft perspective and how they will impact redraft rosters in 2020.

Karp's redraft mock

Karp’s DFF Redraft Mock

Recently, the @DFF_Redraft crew joined up for a redraft mock draft. The format was: start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 2 Flex, 6 bench spots, and PPR scoring. It was the first time this offseason that we did a mock with three starting wide receivers, so I was curious to see how that small change affected my strategy and the other drafters’ strategy.

DFF Army PPR Redraft Mock Draft Review

Every few weeks, the Dynasty Football Factory team gathers its sharpest minds to put together a no time limit mock draft. Throughout the year the type of mock changes quite a bit. At the beginning of the year, it’s a lot of dynasty startups and rookie drafts. Now that it’s summer, the focus switches to redraft.

Jamison Crowder: 2020 Dynasty Profile

It never ceases to amaze me that the majority of people will continue to buy “brand names” items, regardless of the price. This holds true in nearly all facets of society and even extends to fantasy football. Jamison Crowder is not a brand name item. Crowder played in all 16 games last season, starting 12. He led the Jets in targets (122), catches (78), receiving yards (833), and receiving touchdowns (6). Crowder was also quarterback Sam Darnold’s favorite receiver and served as his reliable safety net time and time again.
