Joe Mixon: 2021 Dynasty Profile

Joe Mixon played college football at the University of Oklahoma from 2014-2016. As a redshirt sophomore, Mixon racked up over 1,800 yards from scrimmage and scored 15 TDs. After his strong 2016 season, Mixon declared for the 2017 NFL Draft. During the pre-draft process, he measured in at 6’ 1”, 226 lbs. and registered an impressive 92nd-percentile speed score with his 4.50 40-yard dash. Under different circumstances, Mixon could’ve easily been a first-round pick. Due to character concerns and an incredible RB class that included Leonard Fournette, Dalvin Cook, and Christian McCaffrey, Mixon slipped into the second round where he was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals.

No Reason to Worry for Second Year RBs

NFL Team Deep Dive: Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars fired both HC Doug Marrone and GM Dave Caldwell. Caldwell was the first to be let go. Leading Jacksonville to a mediocre 39-87 record in eight seasons. The Jaguars lost 10 or more games in seven of those seasons. After a franchise-record 10th consecutive loss, team-owner Shad Khan decided to pull the plug on Caldwell. Trent Baalke took over as the interim GM and has a chance to take over as the official GM of the team.

Saquon Barkley: 2021 Dynasty Profile

The Giants drafted Barkley with the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, making him one of the highest-drafted running backs in recent memory. Barkley burst onto the scene as a rookie, finishing as the RB1 overall and second in fantasy PPG, behind only Todd Gurley. Barkley served as Eli Manning’s safety blanket, becoming both a featured rusher and a premier pass-catcher in his rookie season.

Rookie Stock Market: Week 13

This marks two weeks in a row that Cam Akers has made it into the risers. That’s a good look, especially for a rookie that had a relatively rocky start to the season. Week 13 brought Akers a season-high in total yardage, touches, and snap %. In addition to the increased workload, Week 13 marks the third week in a row that Akers has found his way into the end zone. The increase in usage could be attributed to Darrell Henderson Jr. briefly leaving the game with a knee injury, but nonetheless, it is great to see the second-round pick finally get a real workload and look good doing so. I think what is most noteworthy from Week 13 is the usage of Malcolm Brown. Despite Henderson going down with a knee injury, Malcolm Brown saw a season-low in snap rate with just 16%. Does this mark the end of an era? Has Sean McVay finally realized Brown has no juice? Did he finally take a look at box scores and see Malcolm Brown’s longest run on the year is for 19 yards? I think the past few weeks, Akers has proven his worth, and McVay and company are ready to truly get him involved in the offense.

Playoff time is here at last! Did you make it? Sure hope so. Playoffs are the best. It doesn’t matter if you snuck in at 6-7 or ran the table and locked up a first-round bye. From here on out, you win or you go home. That fact is why playoff matchups matter so much. It doesn’t matter if you spent a high-round pick on a guy or if he won you a handful of matchups this year. That was then, this is now. You have to be honest about how that player will perform this week because this week is the only thing that matters. You have to be in it to win it, so play the guys who will keep you in it. In addition to some interesting playoff matchups, we’re also running through some of the players that interest us from a dynasty perspective for those of you who are already looking forward to 2021. Can we have a redo on week two? That was B-R-U-T-A-L! We lost Saquon and Courtland Sutton for the year, and CMC for weeks. Week one waiver wire darling Parris will miss time with a PCL injury. Will Fuller (of course) and Davante Adams are dealing with hamstring issues. Raheem Mostert took it 80 yards to the house with his first carry and then proceeded to sprain his MCL. Who did I miss? Leonard Fournette Rapid Reaction

Today, we had some stunning dynasty news when the Jaguars released Leonard Fournette. I’ll break down the dynasty and 2020 impact on all related assets in this rapid reaction piece. I’ve written about Fournette many times throughout the offseason, most recently in a free dynasty profile. In that article, I had the prescient take not to wait on the season to open to sell Fournette. At the time, I believed he would lose significant work to backups Ryquell Armstead and Chris Thompson, even though I didn’t predict an outright release.  I also noted that the Jaguars tried to trade Fournette throughout the offseason, and they didn’t want him on their team. They declined his fifth-year option, and I expected him to be on a new team in 2021. I have never thought of Fournette as a talented running back, so I thought he’d have little market as a free agent. Now, Fournette hits the free agency market a year earlier than I thought. Once again, if the Jaguars couldn’t trade Fournette for any value, I don’t think he has much interest from other teams. Fournette isn’t an incredibly talented running back, but he deserves to have a job in the NFL.

UDFAs To Know: RB Edition

Draft capital is king; however, GMs aren’t perfect. The following running backs were all undrafted and had significant fantasy value: Austin Ekeler, Phillip Lindsay, Fred Jackson, C.J. Anderson, Arian Foster, and Priest Holmes. Will any of the running backs end up being as valuable? Probably not, but they ranked high enough on my pre-draft film ranking to warrant getting their names out there to dynasty league players. When looking at undrafted free agents, talent matters, but so does opportunity and each of the four players below is closer to an opportunity than the other undrafted free agents.
