2023 Rookie RB Analytics: Tyjae Spears

Rookie scouting season is here and everyone is starting to research and prep for their rookie drafts. In this series, I will go through my process and scout different players for the incoming 2023 class. My process is mainly through an analytical view. This means I am thinking about hit rates, range of outcomes, and probabilities. I favor these things over whether I think the player is talented because that is not only subjective but also difficult. This consistent, numbers-only process allows me to play the odds and hit more than I miss with these rookies. So follow along as I go through Tulane running back, Tyjae Spears.

Week 6 Dynasty Waiver Wire

Hello DFF members, my name is Chris, and I will be writing the weekly dynasty waiver adds piece this year. In this article I will be writing about players that I feel should be owned in much higher quantities in your dynasty leagues. I will try to stick to low ownership percentages, around 30% or less, but if there is a guy above that, who I think should be owned significantly more I will include them as well. I will be focusing on a 12-team, full PPR set-up for these articles but the players I am choosing should apply in 10-team leagues as well. Without further ado let’s get into the waiver adds.

Redraft Waiver Wire Grind: Week 14

We’re officially just one week away from the fantasy football playoffs which means we are all, hopefully, gearing up for a deep playoff run. It all starts with establishing as high as a seed as we can this week, and hopefully a bye. But that doesn’t mean that the waiver wire activity is dead. It should be heating up to get as much crucial depth you can pile up for the run. When gearing up for the playoffs, there’s nothing that can set you back as much as a hurt running back (the highest missed game percentage among fantasy skill positions) with nothing to back it up. Although the waiver wire might not offer that league-winning running back to ride through the playoffs, you can find higher floored depth options.

Six Shares to Watch After Week 2

Unless we’re analyzing workhorse running backs or alpha wide receivers, a player’s usage can fluctuate from week to week. Some will shine and some will ruin your week. Remember, targets and opportunities are earned. In this series, I will provide weekly target shares, rushing attempt shares, and snap shares of SIX players (or groups of players) to help you understand the value of each of them and decide whether to start ‘em, roster ‘em, or trade ‘em.

Kickoff Countdown Day 9: 9 Hardest Players to Project

Welcome to the fourth entry in our Kickoff Countdown series, counting down the days until we can once again sit and watch some real football! As you already know, each article has a numeric theme, which also counts down as each day is ticked off the calendar. In this piece, I’ll be discussing the nine (see the theme?) players that I had the toughest time projecting and what I ultimately expect out of them this season. Not only is it a lot of fun to look at some realistic outcomes for these players, but looking at these projections can also help you to confidently select one player over another when you are on the clock, even if those two players appear almost indistinguishable at first glance. So, without further ado, I give you my nine hardest players to project for the 2021 season.

Dominating Your Rookie Draft: Rookie Pick Value and Tiers

There is no time when a draft pick is more valuable than when it is on the clock in your rookie draft. You have the power to select your favorite rookie prospect, but you also have the opportunity to trade the rights to the pick for what you view as more value to a league mate. By the time rookie drafts roll around, the ADP is more or less settled and we are targeting our favorite prospects within their given tier. Being right on one player versus another player is very important, but being in the situation to control your draft is even more crucial to success in your fantasy leagues.

Looking Ahead to Week 9

In this weekly article, JKarp looks ahead to the following week. He’ll point out a few players below 40% owned on ESPN who have strong matchups next week that you can pick up ahead of time to beat the waiver run. He also helps you get ahead of breakouts that could happen in the current week, as predicting breakouts is the best way to save your FAAB budget.

The Redraft Wire: Week 7

This weekly article is focused on identifying players who are owned in less than 40% of redraft leagues. These players are going to help your team win this week and every week to come! We are looking for guys you should be able to plug into your starting lineup without hesitation.

If you’re in any deeper leagues and need a wide receiver target, Guyton is your guy. He’s owned in very few leagues due to his low target share but he’s scored 14+ PPR fantasy points in two of the last three weeks. Rookie star quarterback, Justin Herbert, has built a connection with Guyton on deep balls and provides that upside many fantasy teams need.

Raheem Mostert Injury

Raheem Mostert Injury Reaction

Raheem Mostert suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 6. Unfortunately, this injury is notoriously difficult to overcome, and Mostert will likely require a trip to the injured reserve. Mostert already missed Weeks 3 and 4 with a knee injury, so this is his second significant injury of the 2020 season.

I’m not sure when Mostert will return, but it’s safe to say that he will miss extended time. Given that he’s already had one injury this season, I have significant concerns about whether Mostert will come back for any meaningful portion of the fantasy season. Mostert must miss Weeks 7-9 after going on injured reserve, and I can’t imagine the 49ers will push him back in Week 10 with a Week 11 bye.

The 49ers’ Injury Nightmare

The 49ers are currently dealing with numerous injuries on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. For now, I’ll focus on the offense, although their defensive injuries are noteworthy for those rostering the 49ers’ D/ST unit. To summarize the defensive issues quickly, they lost Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas to torn ACLs, decimating their offensive line. I wouldn’t write off their D/ST, but fantasy owners should downgrade them moving forward.

Paul’s DFF Redraft Championship Draft

On August 31st, I had the pleasure of drafting against eleven brilliant fantasy minds for the DFF Redraft Championship, a PPR league with 1QB, 2RBs, 3WRs, 1TE, 2Flex, and 1D/ST as starters and 7 bench slots. We spent the night sniping one another and trash-talking on Zoom, which was a ton of fun. When all was said and done, I was thrilled with my team, so let’s take a closer look at how the draft played out.

Brian Hill

Brian Hill: 2020 Dynasty Profile

Like most deep dynasty stashes, I wouldn’t recommend trading for Hill. He could even be on waiver wires in some leagues, as Smith carries more name recognition than Hill. If you can grab Hill as a throw-in as part of a larger deal or for free, he’s likely my favorite stash right now. Gurley carries such a high injury risk, and Hill’s path to relevant touches is clear.

Sleeper Series: Jerick McKinnon

After writing my redraft team breakdown series, I decided to start a new series as we approach the 2020 fantasy season. Every week, or probably more often than that, I’m going to bring you one fantasy sleeper representing a massive value in 2020 redraft leagues. All the links to previous articles are at the bottom of the article. In the first article, I detailed my methodology behind this series, so go back and read that piece if you haven’t yet!

For the next entry, I want to look at Jerick McKinnon. He’s currently left for dead in redraft leagues, but I think he’s worth highlighting as a sleeper. Finding late gems at running back can win you fantasy leagues, and McKinnon might be the 2020 version of a late-round steal.

Raheem Mostert: 2020 Dynasty Profile

Raheem Mostert should be atop all of the “sell high” lists across the industry. His current ADP alone is a sign to test the market. Reports indicate Jerick McKinnon is healthy and back in the fold while Tevin Coleman still looms in the shadows. I personally want no part of this backfield. A 49er’s running back played more than 70% of the offensive snaps just once last year. Let’s not forget who Kyle Shanahan is and how he utilizes running backs. Remember Jeff Wilson scored two touchdowns in Week 1 and was “the guy”. Mostert had just a 32.2% opportunity share (total team running back carries plus targets) in 2019. Shanahan runs a running back by committee offense and that isn’t about to change for the Journeyman Raheem Mostert in 2020.

Dead to Me: Emmanuel Sanders

Dead to Me: Emmanuel Sanders

The shovel is back! My favorite article series returns once again. If you don’t already know, I figuratively bury fantasy players and their redraft stock. You can find all my previous work in this series at the bottom of the page. Unfortunately, the grim reaper has come for Emmanuel Sanders. He’s had a great career, but his time is up. Also, to jump out in front of the potential backlash, I want to make sure you don’t hear what I’m not saying in this article. Sanders was an exceptional real-life and fantasy wide receiver for many years. He had a stellar NFL career and deserves nothing but praise for his perseverance.

Karp's redraft mock

Karp’s DFF Redraft Mock

Recently, the @DFF_Redraft crew joined up for a redraft mock draft. The format was: start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 2 Flex, 6 bench spots, and PPR scoring. It was the first time this offseason that we did a mock with three starting wide receivers, so I was curious to see how that small change affected my strategy and the other drafters’ strategy.

Redraft Team Focus: 49ers

In this article series, I’m analyzing every one of the 32 NFL teams and all of their redraft-relevant fantasy assets. It’s a long project, but I want to make sure that you, the reader, have something you can refer to for every team. For each article, I’ll split up the fantasy assets into three categories: high-end assets, usable contributors, and dart throws. Let’s jump into the 49ers.

Dead to Me: Tevin Coleman

Today, it’s time for a deep dive into Tevin Coleman. Coleman has provided fantasy promise in redraft for parts of his five seasons in the league. However, he has never been able truly to fulfill that upside and has been a fantasy frustration for his entire career. Let’s start with a quick snapshot of Coleman’s career so far.
