JC Johnson’s Undeclared Gems: Jermaine Burton

In the first installment of “Undeclared Gems” I covered another transfer WR in the 2023 class in Jordan Addison. Jermaine Burton is someone I’m more intrigued with as a transfer player, however. The former four-star recruit from Calabasas, CA, possesses good size, listed at 6’0 even, 200lbs. He has blazing speed. Burton is an exciting prospect to me particularly because of Alabama’s success last season in bringing Jameson Williams in via the transfer portal. I believe Burton will be asked to do a lot of the same things as Williams and will be able to showcase his abilities with a Heisman trophy-winning QB, Bryce Young. Talk about an upgrade from Stetson Bennett. Despite the lack of usage at Georgia, Burton still put out a great tape and was used creatively in the scheme when given the opportunity to touch the ball.

Devy Player Comps: Class of 2022

In this article, I will take you through the top devy options that are eligible for the 2022 NFL Draft. We will look at their listed measurements according to their college programs as well as their projected 40-yard dash times. We will project 40-yard dash times by taking their high school combine testing results and adjusting them based on the expected positional progression as these players progress from being 18-year-old kids to 21-year-old NFL players. We will also use film analysis to tweak these projected times on a player-to-player basis. Finally we will look at players who tested similarly to create a superimposed range of outcomes for these players. Let’s dive in with the top options from the class of 2022.

Devy: Fancy Deep Diving

The 6’0” and 208 lbs. sophomore sure has a great pedigree, although he didn’t get much action in the COVID-19 impacted PAC-12 2020 season. His father, Emmitt Smith, is the NFL All-Time leading rusher amassing 18,355 yards over his 15-year career. E.J. Smith showed off a similar rushing capability as his father did in Texas High School Football, also showing off elite receiving abilities with 114 receptions over his final three high school seasons in Dallas. He is currently being selected outside the top-50 in devy drafts and is outside the top-100 in some of the “big-name” devy site rankings. Smith is a player that I can’t get enough of this offseason, and I can’t wait until the consensus sees his value skyrocket.

Treylon Burks: 2021 Devy Profile

As of now, Treylon Burks is a consensus top 5 WR in the 2022 class. I am very confident he will end up in my top 3. What will propel Burks up boards is his athleticism and size. With a frame very similar to D.K. Metcalf and speed of his own, Burks could be a big combine riser. Reports are Treylon has been clocked with a 4.4 40 which is not D.K. Metcalf fast, but fast enough to turn heads and get NFL coaches and GMs talking.

Justyn Ross: A Wide Receiver Possessed

Justyn Ross is possibly the best wide receiver to play for Clemson University, if not one of the best we have seen in the college game of recent memory. Better than DeVonta Smith. Yes, I said that and stand by it. He has the size (6’4”/205 lbs.) and despite his pedestrian 4.87 40 time, as soon as he straps on a helmet and pads, he takes it to a whole other level. The current NFL player I would most likely compare him to is another Clemson WR product, DeAndre Hopkins. His size, catch radius and just football instincts are second to none.

2021 Devy Preview: Ohio State Stacked at WR… Again

Heading into the 2021 season, Ohio State has one of the best-receiving corps in the country. On top of that, they have recruited top receivers the past few seasons resulting in a crowded wide receiver room. The Buckeyes will bring in three top recruits this upcoming season, and without losing any key players, questions about whether there are too many mouths to feed are flying. Undoubtedly some of these guys will have to bide their time, but that doesn’t mean that you should miss out on getting in on the ground floor.

DFF Senior Bowl Part 2: Practice Stand-Outs

The stand-out performances from the weekend’s Senior Bowl contributed to the rise of several players’ draft stocks. However, the game was not the only opportunity players had to show their worth. Many players increased their draft stock and earned some more money by how they performed and carried themselves during the week of practice.

DFF Senior Bowl Part 1: Big Game Performers

The Draft starts in Mobile, Alabama. Over the past two seasons, the player who has won Senior Bowl MVP honors was selected early in the first round of the NFL Draft. In 2019, that was Daniel Jones going sixth overall to become the New York Giants franchise quarterback. In 2020, Justin Herbert scorched the Senior Bowl, earning MVP honors and being selected sixth overall to the Los Angeles Chargers. Herbert went on to set rookie quarterback records and is one of the most valuable Superflex dynasty quarterbacks and players overall. Since 2014, there have been a number of players to play in the senior bowl and go on to become very good NFL players and correspondingly very valuable fantasy assets.

Draft Stock Watch: Bowl Week 2

Somehow, college football season is close to complete. This will be the last installment of this weekly article for the season. The twists and turns of a tumultuous 2020 season will go down in college football lore. We must commend the players, coaches, officials, athletic directors, and university administrators who made this season possible for all of us to watch. While this year there will only be 26 bowl games played and many regular seasons were abbreviated due to the pandemic, they still gave the college football we so desperately needed.

Devy Breakout Player of the Week

The college football regular season concluded this weekend, and we now head into conference championship week. As we await the bowl game invitations we can look back on a great season. The incredibly high number of opt-outs this year opened the door for many underclassmen to have opportunities at Power Five programs that they otherwise would not have. There are some storylines that transcend the sporting event; Michael Jordan hitting ‘the shot’, Mike Tyson biting off Evander Holyfield’s ear, and the base hit that rolled right through Bill Buckner’s legs. The game of the weekend will likely be remembered as the shoe toss, but I will remember it as the day that a young LSU wide receiver arrived.

Devy Breakout Player of the Week

Zachary Evans has been one of the top players in the 2020 recruiting class, but after a lengthy recruitment that finally landed him at TCU, he has emerged as the Horned Frogs’ featured back. Evans stands at 5’11” and 195 lbs. has a body nearly ready for NFL action, and his skill set is emerging as one of the most difficult matchups in the nation. Evans was a five-star prospect across all ranking platforms. Along with having the prototypical running back body type, Evans is a consummate athlete who ran a 4.51-second 40-yard dash in high school and conveyed his elusiveness with a positional best 3.91-second shuttle time. Evans was the top recruit that the Horned Frogs have ever received according to 247 Sports, including Eagles phenom receiver Jalen Reagor, and is the best running back for TCU since LaDainian Tomlinson (online platforms were not ranking high school prospects back in Tomlinson’s day).

DJ Uiagalelei, which is pronounced “ooh-ee-AHN-guh-luh-lay”, is a 6’4” and 250 lbs. five-star true freshman quarterback for the Clemson Tigers. According to 247 Sports Uiagalelei was the tenth overall prospect in the class of 2020 and the second overall quarterback. His rating of 0.9949 grades him out as the 24th rated quarterback that 247 Sports has ever scouted. Uiagalelei played high school football for California powerhouse St. John Bosco where he was the starting quarterback for three years. In those three years, Uiagalelei portrayed a mastery of the quarterback position throwing for over 10,000 yards and 127 TDs versus only 11 interceptions. He also added another 1,100 yards and 18 TDs rushing. DJ Uiagalelei is the most prolific quarterback in Bosco’s history owning the record for career passing yards, passing touchdowns, overall yards, and completions; along with single-season records for passing yards (4,223) and passing touchdowns (48) among many other accolades.

Devy Breakout Player of the Week: Week 4

As we mentioned in last week’s article, the game to watch this week was an SEC powerhouse matchup between the fourth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs and the seventh-ranked Auburn Tigers. Stetson Bennett got his first win as a starting quarterback behind the strong running of Zamir White and the outside playmaking of redshirt sophomore Kearis Jackson. The Bulldogs ended up rolling Auburn 27-6 that emphasized the rawness of sophomore quarterback Bo Nix. The lone positive takeaway for the Tigers was Cartavious “Tank” Bigsby; the true freshman running back displayed his receiving chops hauling in seven catches for 68 yards despite his rushing troubles against the strong Georgia front.
