Sleeper, Breakout, Bust: Tight Ends

Tight end is one of the most infuriating positions to navigate when it comes to draft day. Should you spend an early draft pick and secure one of the elites? Or should you sit back and wait for the later rounds to try and find that diamond in the rough that is basically free? I have approached both strategies, and I don’t believe there is a right or wrong answer.  It comes down to what you, the fantasy manager, prefer in your roster construction. Obviously, the league settings may alter one’s strategy, but both have their benefits. This article will highlight one sleeper, one breakout, and one bust at the tight end position. 2021 Redraft: Paul’s Positional “My Guys”

Ryan Tannehill is my absolute favorite “late-round” quarterback this season. On a PPG basis, Tannehill has finished as the QB9* in each of the past two seasons. He also ranks first in yards per attempt, second in passer rating, and ninth in passing TDs during that stretch. With a 28-game sample size in Tennessee, it’s fair to say that Tannehill has fully rebounded from his below-average seasons in Miami. He is now a high-quality NFL starting QB. He’s also a sneaky rusher who has added over 15 rushing yards per game and 11 total rushing TDs during his stint with the Titans.

DeVonta Smith Sprains MCL: Is Smith too Small to Play in the NFL?

Well, it happened. Eagles rookie wide receiver DeVonta Smith left practice on Monday with an apparent knee injury. Smith had an MRI which helped diagnose him with a sprained MCL in his knee. According to reports, the injury is considered minor and he is only supposed to be out “a couple of weeks” per Ian Rapoport.

Fantasy Stock Up, Stock Down: NFC East

Miles Sanders’ stock is dropping, and his fantasy value is in a completely opposite situation than last offseason at this time. The third-year pro put together a somewhat disappointing season in 2020. He played in four fewer games than his rookie year, he hardly outproduced his rushing statistics, and he was simply a non-factor as a receiver out of the backfield. In 2019, he finished as the RB15 in PPR leagues compared to the RB23 in 2020.

Rookie Face Plants

Death, taxes, and analysts propping up rookie face plants. These second-year receivers are likely presented as premium buy-low players. Players that are still young and have perceived upside. But does buying rookie face plants work? Is it a viable strategy? We must first define what a face plant is. For this study, we will consider 7.5 PPR (per game) or less a face plant. This leaves us with a sample size of 229 receivers (all data of drafted wide receivers since 2010).  Of those 229, only 13 went on to achieve at least a top 24 positional finish and only nine were able to achieve more than one. That’s a staggering 5.7% achieving at least a top 24 positional finish and 3.9% achieving more than one. Not exactly odds that we would want to bet on, let alone trade away rookie draft capital to acquire.

DFF Draft Coverage: DeVonta Smith to the Eagles

In his four years at Alabama, Smith accumulated 235 receptions for 46 total TDs and nearly 4000 yards (3965). He was extremely productive in college and surpassed even Ja’Marr Chase’s impressive 2019 season this past year. Even with two first-rounders on the team in 2019, Smith was able to post a 1000-yard season, giving him a breakout age of 20.8. He had a college dominator of 51.3%, good enough to place him in the 96th percentile. Add that to a target share of 34.6% which put him in the 95th percentile. His catch rate over the last two seasons was nearly 80% (79.1, 79.6). DeVonta Smith was a beast in college, and he has the  production to back it up.

Wentz There’s a Will There’s a Way

Carson Wentz’s career has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. Wentz was initially drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles with the second overall pick in the 2016 draft and caught fire almost instantly. In his first year, he set multiple NFL and Eagles’ rookie records and in his second year led the Eagles to an 11-2 record catapulting him into a front runner for league MVP before suffering a torn ACL, ending his season.

Rookie Stock Market: Week 15

Congratulations! I hope this applies to a lot of y’all, as I believe my readers are educated and smart fantasy players who have made it to the finals of their leagues. My overall percentage of teams in the playoffs is down compared to normal, but 2020 has been nothing but normal right? Like last week, we had several big-time rookie performances in Week 15. Jalen Hurts was the top-scoring player across all positions, and Justin Herbert was QB6. D’Andre Swift was RB10, Jonathan Taylor was RB15, Brandon Aiyuk was WR6, CeeDee Lamb WR11, and Justin Jefferson WR16. So if you rostered and played these rookies, you’re happy you did! Like the past two weeks, in addition to the normal stuff I cover here, I will be adding a Week 16 Playoff Spin for each rookie I touch on today. Let’s get into it!

The carnage of Week 14 is a not-so-friendly reminder to keep grinding all the way to the end of the season. Players who left the field with injuries include 49ers’ LB Fred Warner, Cardinals’ IDL Jordan Phillips, Bears’ CB Jaylon Johnson, and no fewer than four Eagles: CB Darius Slay, CB Avonte Maddox, S Rodney McLeod, and DT Malik Jackson. Three starting Raiders – DE Clelin Ferrell, LB Nicholas Morrow, and S Johnathan Abram – were sidelined, and the Raiders’ 44-27 loss to the Colts got defensive coordinator Paul Guenther canned.

NFC East: Divisional Nuggets

I think the Giants stunned everyone by beating the Seahawks 17-12, remaining in first place in the NFC East. The Giants haven’t had star Saquon Barkley all season due to an ACL tear, and Daniel Jones missed this game with a hamstring injury. Also, Devonta Freeman remains on injured reserve with an ankle injury and is on the COVID-19 reserve list. Luckily, the rest of their offense is currently healthy, and I expect Jones to return in Week 14.

Carson Wentz Benched, Jalen Hurts Starting Quarterback

Let’s look back even further to April of 2016, right before the NFL Draft. The Eagles here were able to pull off a trade with the Cleveland Browns to secure the second-overall pick and select the North Dakota State University quarterback Carson Wentz. The Eagles originally had the eighth-overall pick so they had to pull out the full bag of tricks to move up. They traded the eighth-overall pick, along with their third-rounder and fourth-rounder in 2016. On top of that, the Eagles traded their first- and second-round picks in 2017 to pull off the deal. So in totality, the Eagles have handed Carson Wentz the keys to the franchise, and to their credit, they were able to win Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots.
