So the Jaguars… aren’t… tanking? Welcome to sports betting, where a team that has jettisoned off all of its talent somehow overcomes all odds to beat a team that went all-in on 2020. I’m sure I’m not the only one that got burned by Minshew Magic if my survivor pools are any indication. But, it still doesn’t take the sting out of it. At least we had a nice rebound with Washington pulling off the upset over a banged-up Eagles team. They’re not done yet, with defensive end Vinny Curry also suffering a significant injury. This will be a year to forget for Philadelphia. Overall we went 9-7-0, which isn’t the best but certainly not the worst. We will try to build on that this week.

Let’s start this year off spicy. Not only do I think the Redskins cover, I think they pull off the upset and beat the Eagles outright (+225 ML). I am firmly planting my flag that the Eagles will not be a good team this year. They have been absolutely ravaged by injuries and the season hasn’t even begun. The Eagles have lost their starting left tackle, right guard, and a whole host of receivers. Down two starters on their offensive line, who do the Eagles draw Week One? Just a Washington team boasting five first-round picks in their front seven. Couple this with the reported accuracy issues Carson Wentz is experiencing so far in camp, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Washington pull off the upset in this one.

Darnold hasn’t been a usable fantasy quarterback in his first two NFL seasons. The Jets picked Darnold with the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and he immediately won the Week 1 starting job. However, the 2018 Jets lacked receiving weapons, and Darnold couldn’t overcome that obstacle as a rookie. There were a couple of bright spots in Robby Anderson, Quincy Enunwa, and rookie tight end Chris Herndon, but none of them were star players. The team fired head coach Todd Bowles after a 4-12 season.

What we’ve seen over and over again in this league is that teams seem to have the most success when they can capitalize on a rookie quarterback treaty. Coupling this reality with one just as obvious is the fact that Darnold has had some pretty unimpressive weapons throughout his time in New York. This is still a work in progress. But, make no mistake about it, progress has been made. While the loss of Robby Anderson hurts, the addition of Breshad Perriman coupled with the drafting of Denzel Mims should more than make up for said departure. Also, worth noting is both Bell’s second year in the system as well as (finger’s crossed) the return of Chris Herndon at tight end.

The league-altering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have now significantly hurt the IDP world of fantasy football, as a consensus LB2 in C.J. Mosley just became the biggest name on the defensive side of the football to take the NFL’s opt-out alternative to the 2020 season. Mosley joins Patriots’ linebacker Dont’a Hightower and safety Patrick Chung as the only rosterable IDPs to have opted out before the season, outside of deeper leagues. This is a monumental blow to the New York Jets’ defense as well.

Jamal Adams has been traded to the Seattle Seahawks by the New York Jets! Wow, very exciting news that I’m sure everyone has heard about but I still felt the need to shout it out, so to speak, for all to hear. Which means I was definitely wrong when I wrote just a few days that I didn’t foresee a deal happening before the season. It did and it was a big one that included safety Bradley McDougald, a first-round pick in 2021 and 2022, and a third-round pick in 2021. It never ceases to amaze me that the majority of people will continue to buy “brand names” items, regardless of the price. This holds true in nearly all facets of society and even extends to fantasy football. Jamison Crowder is not a brand name item. Crowder played in all 16 games last season, starting 12. He led the Jets in targets (122), catches (78), receiving yards (833), and receiving touchdowns (6). Crowder was also quarterback Sam Darnold’s favorite receiver and served as his reliable safety net time and time again.

Jamal Adams deserves to get paid. Is he worth the $20 million-plus a year he’s rumored to be seeking though? Today’s top-paid safeties don’t even make $15 million a year. The Jets say they want to make Adams a Jet for life, but they don’t seem motivated to sign Adams to any long term deals and why would they. From a business standpoint, it doesn’t make sense for the team. They still have him on contract, for much less, for the next two years. This has led to a lot of friction between the sides though and Adams has asked for a trade. His seven preferred destinations were the Ravens, Eagles, Cowboy, 49ers, Texans, Chiefs, and the Seahawks. Some of these teams seem a little more feasible than others to me.
