This is a new buy/sell/hold series that I will be diving into for dynasty formats. In this piece I’ll be going through some screaming buys I’m seeing as I look through recent ADP.
Currently, Jack Doyle is going as the 28th tight end off the board per dynasty ADP. This is surprising, to say the least. Doyle is the unquestioned starter in Indianapolis and Philip Rivers just join his team, the quarterback who throws to tight ends almost 23% of the time. Doyle is 30 years old but is signed through the 2022 season. Since 2016 Doyle has finished as TE13, TE7, and TE15 in seasons where he has played at least 15 games. The only real competition that Doyle has is Trey Burton who has had one good season to date back in 2018 where he finished as TE8. A tight end who has played at least 15 games in three of the last four years and has finished as a high TE2 or TE1 in all of those years should be getting more love than Doyle is currently receiving. Doyle represents a great opportunity to be a dark horse TE1 that you can get at TE28. He is not a sexy pick but is a solid, consistent pick who can win you leagues.
Speaking of sexy picks… I have been fairly vocal about my love for Gardner Minshew this offseason. I believe that he is a starting quarterback in the NFL for many years to come. He had an incredible rookie season after being forced into the starting gig because of a Nick Foles injury early in 2019. Minshew finished his rookie year as QB20 despite only playing in 14 of his team’s games. He is currently being drafted as QB27. I fully understand the risk that the Jaguars could be one of the worst teams in the league and draft one of the top tier quarterbacks in the 2021 draft. My issue with that is that I believe Minshew is an NFL caliber starting quarterback, and he hasn’t shown anything to prove otherwise. He had 21 touchdowns to six interceptions and showed some nice mobility averaging over 24 yards on the ground per game in 2019. Surprisingly, Minshew had four QB1 weeks in 2019 on a team where his only real receiving weapon was D.J. Chark. If Minshew plays to a similar level or improves at all in his second season the Jaguars cannot dismiss that type of talent and would be foolish to move on. However, if it happens that the Jaguars are one of the worst teams in the NFL, there is a chance they could trade their pick or draft a quarterback and have him sit for a season behind Minshew while he plays out his contract. Once his contract runs out or he is traded, I believe that he will be the starter wherever he is shipped off to. Minshew certainly carries some risk, but to fade a guy because his team could draft a quarterback next season leaves too many variables for me to subscribe to that philosophy. Sign me up for Minshew at QB27 and give me a guy who will easily beat that ADP this season.
It is easy to look past Jamison Crowder, not because he is only 5’9” but rather because he has played for two of the worst franchises so far in his young career. He was a member of the newly titled Washington Football Team and is now on the New York Jets. Now, don’t let those awful teams fool you. In seasons where he has played at least 15 games, he has never finished worse than WR 51(and that was in his rookie season). Since then he has finished as WR 31, WR 33, WR 87(only played 9 games), and most recently WR 26(!). Now, if your league is not PPR you can go ahead and stop reading now. But, if your league is PPR you can be getting a potential WR2 in 2021 and beyond with the 60th WR taken per DLF ADP data. This is a massive steal for your team. He was the 19th most targeted wide receiver in 2019 and with a healthy Sam Darnold and some additional weapons in the fold like Breshad Perriman and Denzel Mims, look for Crowder to eclipse 100 targets again this year. Crowder is being taken as a WR5 in ADP and will likely finish as a WR3; give me Jamison Crowder all day in dynasty this season and beyond!
