2023 Underrated Rookies: A QB + TE to Trade for This Offseason

Did your 2023 Dynasty Fantasy Football Season go differently than planned? Is your Dynasty Roster in need of a little shakeup? You may need a young quarterback and tight end with bright futures. It will take a lot to trade for players like C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson, Bryce Young, Sam LaPorta, Dalton Kincaid, or even Michael Mayer. But one rookie quarterback and one tight end each stand out as players who still have very bright futures in this league. Below are the two rookies you should target in trades this offseason. Remember that these are candidates for large rostered/deep Dynasty Leagues.

2023 Rookie QB Analytics: Bryce Young

Rookie scouting season is approaching and what better way to prepare than to get a head start on your league mates and get to work before the NFL season ends? In this series, I will go through my process and scout each of the potential incoming rookie QBs for the 2023 class. My process is mainly through an analytical view. This means I am thinking about hit rates, range of outcomes, and probabilities. I favor these things over whether I think the player is talented because that is not only subjective but also difficult. This consistent, numbers-only process allows me to play the odds and hit more than I miss with these rookies. So follow along as I go through Alabama quarterback, Bryce Young.

The Case For Kenny Pickett

Reports are posturing that Kenny Pickett is merely an afterthought at the Steelers’ mandatory training camp. Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph appear locked in a battle for the starting gig, with the newly-minted 20th overall pick riding the pine. Today, we open up the case file on the Steelers’ 2022 first-round draft pick to hyper-analyze his future as an NFL quarterback and, ultimately, an effective dynasty asset.

2022 DFF Superflex Rookie Mock 4.0: Round 1

Sports Illustrated reported that over 10 NFL Teams graded Desmond Ridder as a First-Round Talent. Should Ridder meet that expected capital, his dynasty value will skyrocket above 1.12. Landing Ridder anywhere in the second half of your rookie drafts is exceptional value. I would not be surprised to see Ridder valued higher than every quarterback from the 2022 class come this time next season.

NFL Combine: “Does Size Matter?” Quarterback Edition

The NFL Combine officially kicked off this week, beginning with medical testing, team interviews, and of course, in-person measurements. NCAA schools are notorious for exaggerating size (aren’t we all). The combine gives us our first look at true-to-life measurements, including height, weight, wingspan, hand size, and BMI.

Dynasty Market Sweep: Rookie QB Value Review

Welcome to the Dynasty Market Sweep, a weekly recurring offseason article focusing on substantial value disparities in the dynasty market consensus. The very nature of the instantaneous fantasy news feed has made the dynasty market more reactionary and volatile than ever before. Once the proverbial petrol is poured, and Twitter fingers snap to ignite, player values can burn to the ground overnight. Value changes of this nature cause a ripple effect across the market. For every step up the ladder, someone must move down and vice versa.

Rookie Quarterback Mousetrap Revisited

In 2020, Justin Herbert became the first rookie QB to throw for over 4,000 yards and 25 TDs. He broke the NFL rookie record for TD passes and completions, in fact. As a result, Keenan Allen put together a more impressive season than any WR in our sample. Still, digging a little deeper, Allen did leave some meat on the bone. He finished as the WR7 in PPG despite seeing the second-most targets per game. He recorded a career-low of 9.9 yards per reception, as well. These minor inefficiencies can likely be chalked up to the growing pains of a rookie QB.

DFF Draft Coverage: Ian Book to the Saints

Ian Book finished his four-year career with the second-most career passing yards in Notre Dame’s history (8,948). He also finished second in career passing touchdowns (72) and second in career QBR (147.0) amongst those who attempted 500 or more passes. Book also put up great rushing statistics in college as well. In 45 career games, he produced 1,517 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. The dual-threat quarterback can beat you both with his arm or with his legs, and in today’s game, being able to pass or run on any given down creates a major disadvantage for defenses.

DFF Draft Coverage: Davis Mills to the Texans

Davis Mills was ranked as the top overall quarterback in the class of 2017, ahead of Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, and Mac Jones. Mills took over as the starting quarterback for Stanford as a true freshman. Mills accumulated just 3,468 passing yards and 18 TDs versus eight INTs in his four-year collegiate career at Stanford. Mills is strictly a pocket-passer and does not offer any threat on the ground for defenders.

DFF Draft Coverage: Mac Jones to the Patriots

Mac Jones is a quarterback who will reflect the system he is in, and the Patriots do not have much to work with outside their free-agent tight end additions. He will be drafted higher than the typically QB5 in a Superflex Rookie Draft, however, he does not become a value until the late second-round. He could have a long career paired up with legendary coach Bill Belichick, but his upside is capped as a QB2 with the weapons that surround him.

DFF Draft Coverage: Trey Lance to the 49ers

Lance took over as the starting quarterback for North Dakota State as a redshirt freshman. Lance accumulated just 2,786 passing yards and 28 TDs versus zero INTs in his one-year collegiate career at North Dakota State. I removed the single-game 2020 statistics from his totals because of the nature that North Dakota State scheduled the game for NFL Draft candidates, before playing a Spring Season. Lance also proved to be an elite rusher with 1,182 career rushing yards and 16 TDs on the ground.

DFF Draft Coverage: Zach Wilson to the Jets

Zach Wilson took over as the starting quarterback for BYU as a true freshman. Wilson accumulated 7,652 passing yards and 56 TDs versus only 15 INTs in his three-year collegiate career at BYU. He also proved to be a capable rusher with 642 career rushing yards and 15 TDs on the ground. Though he averaged only three yards per rush (including sacks).

DFF Draft Coverage: Trevor Lawrence To The Jaguars

Trevor Lawrence took over as the starting quarterback for Clemson as a true freshman. That season concluded with Lawrence leading the Clemson Tigers to a National Championship. In his career, Lawrence completed 758 of 1,138 pass attempts, a 66.6% rate. He threw for 10.098 yards, 90 TDs, and just 17 INTs which equates to a 164.3 passer rating. Lawrence also added 943 rushing yards and 18 TDs on the ground. Just to remind the reader, college rushing stats include sacks and kneel-downs.

Incoming Rookie Quarterbacks

With the recent draft trades, things are spicing up a month before the NFL draft is set to open and teams are doing their best to fill fans with hope for upcoming seasons. I’ll be analyzing the incoming rookie quarterbacks in this one because teams don’t trade up to take any other position than the face of the franchise. It will be more than likely a run of quarterbacks very early in this year’s draft, and for Superflex leagues, it’ll be hard to decide between more than a few of these players.
