QBs on the Chopping Block: Planning for the 2027 Class

There was an interesting question posed by a subscriber in our DFF Discord this past weekend, following this tweet being posted:  Seeing the potential that the 2027 draft class has at the quarterback position, Josh asked this:  It’s an excellent question, and one we need to be asking ourselves for dynasty purposes. Obviously, a good number of guys from McShay’s list above either won’t pan out as first-round talents or will elect to stay in college for the 2027 season if they have remaining eligibility. But there are additional guys not on this list who could end up being first-round selections. Josh Hoover. John Mateer. Maybe DJ Lagway finally has that breakout season everyone’s been waiting for. Maybe Drew Mestemaker’s G5 dominance carries over into the P4, and he emerges as a top pick. It’s hard to project any of this so far out, but for the sake of this exercise, let’s take McShay at his word and treat the 2027 QB class as the “historic” one he’s calling it. Who will these quarterbacks be taking over for? Let’s take a look at the guys whose jobs may not be as secure as we think. The Superflex Cheat Code: Stashing Backup Quarterbacks

In Superflex leagues, your quarterback room is absolutely vital. It can make or break your season. In 2024, 59 signal-callers started at least one NFL game. In 2025, that number grew to 63. Every year, more and more, we’re seeing Dynasty contenders have their campaigns derailed by injuries or benchings. Having a stash of QBs at your disposal could help you get through those rough patches. The reality is a backup QB who gets even a start or two is almost always more useful — and valuable — than a WR9 or TE5 rotting away on your bench. You can either plug them into your lineup as needed or flip them for picks or an upgrade at another position. Those fringe skill players will rarely ever crack your lineup. Get those roster cloggers out of there. Instead of keeping them, use those precious spots on backup QBs who can become instant difference-makers should they get thrust into a starting gig. With that in mind, here is a list of backup QBs I believe you should be trying to acquire for 2026.

Rapid Reaction: Baker Mayfield to the Panthers

For my money, I think both Mayfield and Darnold are better than people give them credit for. Mayfield is much better, though. He played under incredibly painful and difficult conditions for most of last year with a torn labrum in his left shoulder. People that say “but who cares, it wasn’t his throwing shoulder” are people you shouldn’t listen to. He also showed a lot of improvement the year prior, in my opinion, in a season that included three monsoon-type games. Look at his splits after the weather cleared. He has 92 TDs and 56 INTs in his career so far, compared to 54 and 52, respectively, for Darnold. I think he wins the job easily and I would approach drafts with that assumption.

FFPC Dynasty & Redraft Series: Week 3

Whew. This past week was much better than the first. Most of my teams that started off with a loss got back to even and a number of solid teams moved to 2-0. Sadly there are more 0-2 teams in my portfolio than I would like. We know a lot more about the landscape out there today than we did two weeks ago, but we still need more time for the process of variance to give us a clearer picture. If I had to describe Ebron’s prevailing narrative, I would say that most dynasty owners consider Ebron to be a complete bust, who then had one outlier season in 2018 before fading back to normal in 2019. However, that narrative isn’t real. Ebron was consistently mediocre from 2015-2017, finishing as a high-end TE2 in each year. Both 2018 and 2019 are outliers compared to that stretch of middling performances. To determine the truth about Ebron, we need to go back and look beyond the top-line stats.

Funchess Signs with the Packers
