Raiding the IDP Waiver Wire: Week 2

In light of what we saw in Week 2, Week 1 reminds me of the first scene at the Moscow hospital in the television series “Chernobyl.” Firefighters responded to the explosion of a nuclear reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear reactor in Ukraine. Those that survived were transported to Moscow for treatment for severe radiation exposure. The wife of firefighter Vasily finds her husband playing cards and smoking cigarettes on a hospital bed during a reprieve in symptoms. Week 2 of the 2020 NFL season was the end of that Chernobyl episode, where Vasily and his comrades experienced cellular disintegration turning them into molten lumps of flesh. Shocking and irreversible was the injury carnage of Week 2.

Week One IDP Wrap Up

The Vikings defense was… well… terrible on Sunday. Minnesota gave up 43 points and 522 yards at home against the Green Bay Packers. The Vikings defensive backs are young and inexperienced, which puts a lot of pressure on veterans like Eric Kendricks, Harrison Smith, and Anthony Barr. Expect extra IDP opportunities for the Vikings as they struggle with coverage.

Raiding the IDP Waiver Wire: Week 1

Welcome back to Dynasty Football Factory’s weekly in-season column, Raiding the IDP Waiver Wire! I write tonight with feelings of relief and exaltation that the NFL has returned to the field with a product we recognize well. I’m excited to see how much my off-season work will prove predictive for the season! I’ve never experienced a Week 1 with more uncertainty regarding defensive schemes and players’ roles within them. The lack of preseason games has made this week of football a wrapped gift containing contents about which we could only dare to forecast.

Draft Stock Watch Week 1

Draft Stock Watch: Week 1

As this college football season shapes up to be the most unpredictable in memory, it will be as important as ever for devy owners to keep tabs on what is happening. The COVID-19 pandemic has already caused major headaches for the college football landscape, as two Power 5 conferences have already postponed their seasons (BIG10 and PAC12).  Sprinkled in are many high profile opt-outs who have chosen to forego their 2020 season and prepare for the NFL draft.

2020 Cornerback Ranks

Covering Your Bets: 2020 Cornerback Ranks

The fantasy value of cornerbacks is highly volatile for each player year over year but quite flat as a group throughout each season. Theories about what makes a cornerback a good IDP option abound.

Some fantasy gamers seek a cornerback playing press-man coverage in front of two deep safeties. Others prefer cornerbacks who play zone. The latter type, facing the line of scrimmage, can better assist with run defense. Many gamers also target rookies as well as teammates of renowned “shutdown” cornerbacks.

Every Angle of the Yannick Ngakoue Trade

In what has already been an unpredictable offseason, we have now witnessed a trade involving a big-time defensive star and cornerstone defensive pass-rusher in Yannick Ngakoue. Reports have surfaced that the Jaguars have traded Ngakoue to the Minnesota Vikings for a 2021 second-round pick and a conditional fifth-round pick. That conditional pick could become as high as a third-round pick, pending performances. This is the biggest offseason news to hit the IDP fantasy community since C.J. Mosley took the NFL’s COVID-19 opt-out offer and decided to forego the season.

2020 DFF Weekly Preview

2020 DFF Weekly Preview

Unlike my usual articles, this one will have nothing to do with the NFL itself or even anything specifically related to fantasy football. Instead, I want to do a little preview of what’s to come from the DFF team during the 2020 season. We’re going to do weekly article series for dynasty, redraft, devy, IDP, and even DFS. Of course, we’ll cover breaking news and other topics outside of solely this content, but we’re committing to providing an excellent base of weekly content. Let’s go through what we will cover, department by department.

Budda Baker Tyrann Mathieu

Who You Got: Budda Baker vs Tyrann Mathieu

Budda Baker has been a tackling machine since joining the NFL. In his three seasons as a pro, Baker has racked up 323 combined tackles. That’s over 107 tackles per season, all while missing two games folks! As mentioned in the profile section above, Baker is only 24 years old. Barring injury, the Cardinals stud is in line for multiple years of high-end production.

Tyrann Mathieu is a playmaker at every level of defense. Averaging over 80 tackles per year since 2017, the Kansas City star has also accrued six sacks and eight interceptions over those past three years. Mathieu also has two more years left on his contract, so his place in Kansas City looks secure.

Slim Pickings: 2020 Interior Defensive Linemen Ranks

The scarcity of defensive ends that challenge fantasy gamers assembling rosters in conventional-position IDP leagues shifts to the interior in true-position IDP. I’ve ranked 62 interior defensive linemen for 2020 because every IDL with a pulse will eventually appear on fantasy rosters. I calibrated my ranks for 2020 seasonal leagues for 14-team, true-position full-IDP leagues with the scoring settings of FantasyPros.com and 55 roster spots. To that end, I list here 40 interior defensive linemen in the order of value they offer teams starting 11 IDPs including two IDLs. The remaining 22 require additional explanation.

Stock Up to Win: 2020 EDGE Ranks

2019 was a banner year for rookie edge defenders. Several more break-out performances from players that fantasy gamers had left for dead combine with the rookies good depth to the EDGE position. The position mirrors the wide-receiver position in that there are more strong, steady options than ever and plenty of depth for those with the stomach to play match-ups.

Shoot for the Moon: 2020 Linebacker Ranks

Seasonal (redraft) ranks will appear in article form this year at Dynasty Football Factory. The IDP ranks in spreadsheet form are and will remain for a dynasty format. I’ll update these dynasty ranks year-round, thus making available a rare resource for IDP gamers. I, myself, was always on the hunt for current dynasty ranks for start-up and dispersal drafts for IDP leagues before I started writing.

C.J. Mosley Opt Out Fallout: Rapid Reaction

The league-altering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have now significantly hurt the IDP world of fantasy football, as a consensus LB2 in C.J. Mosley just became the biggest name on the defensive side of the football to take the NFL’s opt-out alternative to the 2020 season. Mosley joins Patriots’ linebacker Dont’a Hightower and safety Patrick Chung as the only rosterable IDPs to have opted out before the season, outside of deeper leagues. This is a monumental blow to the New York Jets’ defense as well.

Jamal Adams Trade Story

Future Telling: Jamal Adams

Jamal Adams has been traded to the Seattle Seahawks by the New York Jets! Wow, very exciting news that I’m sure everyone has heard about but I still felt the need to shout it out, so to speak, for all to hear. Which means I was definitely wrong when I wrote just a few days that I didn’t foresee a deal happening before the season. It did and it was a big one that included safety Bradley McDougald, a first-round pick in 2021 and 2022, and a third-round pick in 2021. The Seahawks got Jamal Adams and a fourth-round pick in 2022 in return. That’s established, we know the trade details, let’s get to the real reason we’re here, to try to see the future

Schemes Are Ch-Ch-Changing: Cowboys Join Hybrid Herd

The defensive scheme change in Dallas could be quite shocking to Cowboys’ fans. Mike Nolan’s body of work combined with recent experience in the Saints’ hybrid system as a linebackers coach should yield a more varied and complex defense than fans have known. Not only will we miss preseason action to see a preview of this defense, but also beat writers are prohibited from reporting players’ alignments during training camp. 2020 will provide more surprises than ever for IDP aficionados and this in a time when defenses are ever more multiple. September 13, 2020, will be the most astonishing day of football in a long time!

Karp’s Favorite Fantasy Format

No matter the format, the most important thing is that you and your league mates enjoy playing together. Play the types of leagues you like, and feel free to try new leagues. However, it’s also okay if you don’t want to play a specific format, like how I feel about IDP leagues. Just be a good person and an active owner, and you’ll enjoy your time in this world.

The IDP Unseen Series: Part 1

In this series of articles, we discuss some players from each defensive position group that are poised to break out this season. These players should put up a floor of respectable, fantasy starting lineup stat lines with the potential for positional top-15 ceilings. These are players that can be drafted or acquired with minimal draft capital in most full IDP leagues. An examination of the factors promoting these ascending players will take place in each article. Remarkably, there are quite a few players that are among the “IDP unseen,” as of now. We will start with the defensive line.

2020 Poor IDP Strength of Schedule

In this series, we analyze the IDP strength-of-schedule for the 2020 NFL season. In IDP fantasy football, fewer opportunities correlate to reduced chances of production and underperforming IDP assets. Today, we’ll focus on low pace-of-play / plays-per-game schedules that a few unlucky defenses will face (based on 2019 data). Let’s take a look at the defenses and IDP defenders who could suffer from their schedule.

Schemes Are Ch-Ch-Changing: The Rams Are Sputtering!

The Los Angeles Rams felt the hangover of a Super Bowl loss in 2019, missing the playoffs with a 9-7 record. They finished 7th in total offense (yards gained) and 13th in total defense. The analytics firm Football Outsiders ranked the 2019 Rams defense 9th. This defense improved significantly over the 2018 version in both metrics while the offense regressed year over year.
