Paul’s Picks Week 16

With all of the postponed games, surprise flops, and COVID-related absences, Week 15 may have been the most chaotic week in the history of fantasy football. I mean, Duke Johnson was the RB1 for goodness’ sake. That being said, most of our picks performed as expected. In particular, Jalen Hurts came through with a strong performance that likely swayed many playoff matchups late on Tuesday evening. DeAndre Hopkins Out for the Regular Season: Rapid Reaction

DeAndre Hopkins, the perennial Top-5 finisher will finish outside of the Top-12 for the second time since leaving Houston. You can’t call his 14.72 PPR per game bad but It certainly falls short of the price tag many paid for him across every format. The dip in production has less to do with ability and more about usage and a few minor injuries. Moreover, the Cardinals have a receiving room filled with talent and haven’t needed to rely on him for most of the offensive production like the Texans had to. The explosive offense can spread around to several players on the ground or through the air and has capped Hokins’ volume and upside. He’s currently fourth in team target share.

I will be helping you determine what players value you should be taking advantage of in your dynasty leagues as we approach the fantasy playoffs and offseason. If someone’s value is too high I might tell you to sell. If I think their value will decrease soon, he could also be a sell. I will give my reasoning for why each player falls in a certain category. Kyler Murray Injury: Rapid Reaction

Kyler has not produced the video-game level numbers that were projected of him this offseason. Dubbed a “Konami Code” quarterback, Kyler has not rushed for a touchdown since Week 3 against the Jaguars. He has just 147 rushing yards this season, averaging a paltry 18.3 rushing yards per game. Kyler’s once rock-solid rushing upside has crumbled and should continue to decline post-injury.

Film Study Guide: Scouting Elite Route-Runners

Film vs Analytics is one of the contested debates in the fantasy community. Both are important and one hand washes the other. Scouting and watching film are the foundation of evaluating talent. If data was the only indicator of success, NFL scouts wouldn’t need a scouting department. They would hire a Google Intern to run algorithms for them. On the flip side, data can help you make unbiased decisions and adjust your rankings by having a macro-level view of a pool of statistics. It’s important to understand what coaches look at on the field or in training camp because they decide if a player will even see the field. Not your algorithm. Moreover, learning scouting and theory can help you understand why players perform the way they do and what makes your data sing or choke.

DFF Redraft League: Drafting From the Fourteen Spot

For this NFL season, a collection of 14 DFF analysts took their talents to a new Redraft league. As the analyst with the 14th pick, I knew it would be an uphill climb to add value. Despite this being a redraft league, I decided to go with my favorite dynasty strategy, the zero-RB. Knowing that this is a 14-team league, we had to adjust compared to the standard 12-team leagues in which elite positional players hold even more of a premium.

Fantasy Stock Up, Stock Down: NFC West

With the injury bug attacking San Francisco as a team in recent seasons, the rookie RB could find opportunities sooner than later. Jeff Wilson has already been struck with bad luck this offseason with a torn meniscus. Raheem Mostert is penciled in as the team’s starter for now, and he has played in all 16 games once in his seven years in the league. San Francisco also brought in Wayne Gallman from free agency this offseason, an RB who has never played in all 16 games and only holds 14 career starts under his belt in four seasons. 

In comes the rookie out of Ohio State, Trey Sermon. He was drafted out of the third round in this year’s NFL Draft, and he may find a steady role in this offense. Although he isn’t known as an elite pass-catcher, it wouldn’t be surprising if he turned into one. Right now, there are the three other RBs that will battle with him for playing time, but if he could find a way to become a threat in the receiving game, there’s no doubt that he will take more snaps than both Gallman and Wilson.

Kenny Golladay Reaction

On March 20th, Kenny Golladay signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the New York Giants. Put another way, the biggest receiver in free agency signed the biggest contract to play in the Big Apple. When an elite wide receiver changes teams, as we saw with Stefon Diggs and DeAndre Hopkins in 2020, it’s kind of a big deal. The End of an Era: Watt to Leave Texans

Houston is experiencing one of the most turbulent years in sports history. No other time can I remember a city losing four superstars in a matter of just three months. In December, former MVP Russell Westbrook was jettisoned to Washington. Just a month later, Houston lost another former MVP in James Harden to Brooklyn.
