Carolina Panthers

Rapid Reaction: Baker Mayfield to the Panthers

For my money, I think both Mayfield and Darnold are better than people give them credit for. Mayfield is much better, though. He played under incredibly painful and difficult conditions for most of last year with a torn labrum in his left shoulder. People that say “but who cares, it wasn’t his throwing shoulder” are people you shouldn’t listen to. He also showed a lot of improvement the year prior, in my opinion, in a season that included three monsoon-type games. Look at his splits after the weather cleared. He has 92 TDs and 56 INTs in his career so far, compared to 54 and 52, respectively, for Darnold. I think he wins the job easily and I would approach drafts with that assumption.

Christian McCaffrey

2022 Projections: Carolina Panthers

When we loosely compare players, most people feel they have a good idea of what kind of production to expect. We may think “Christian McCaffrey could never be the player he once was, or that D.J. Moore is incapable of being a WR1.” But, these may just be false narratives. I make projections to ground myself and help to understand what is actually possible, probable, or realistic. So, in this series, I will be going through each NFL team and making median projections for their 2022 seasons with their most fantasy-relevant players. I may be able to discern if certain players are being undervalued immediately but in most cases, I will need to finish more teams to get a good idea.

Dynasty Market Sweep: Post-Draft Rookie QB Market Report

Malik Willis’ draft week freefall finally ended in the third round. By that time, it was too late. Willis’ drastic drop down draft boards caused an aftershock throughout the dynasty community, dropping the value of all rookie picks in Superflex leagues save for the 1.01. Managers reacted by reshaping rookie ADP overnight, forcing nearly every skill position player into first-round value.

2022 DFF Draft Coverage: Matt Corral

As a prospect, Corral is decisive and operates with an excellent release to challenge tight window throws, and possesses the touch to drop in challenging throws in the short to intermediate. His biggest knock as a passer is on his deep ball, which sometimes hits brilliantly but can be inconsistent. He creates run-after-catch opportunities with his pinpoint short-to-intermediate accuracy. Corral is an above-average runner but is currently too cavalier, and he is not built to take the pounding at the next level. Durability and concerns about off-the-field reliability forced his slide in the draft. The Panthers are about the best possible landing spot for Corral, as they have struggled to get consistent play from Sam Darnold. Additionally, Matt Rhule is known as a “players’ coach” who can relate and help get the most out of Corral, and hopefully, keep him on track. The draft capital will force Corral down into the mid-second round of dynasty rookie drafts.

The Future Landscape of the Fantasy Quarterback

When most of us first started playing fantasy football Peyton Manning and Tom Brady were the guys, and now it’s Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen. Drew Brees and Philip Rivers were up-and-comers, and now it’s Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert. Michael Vick was redefining the game at QB and looked like a once-in-a-lifetime talent, and now Lamar Jackson and Kyler Murray are making similar highlights. The QBs have changed with the game, and a big arm with escapability outweighs the ability to be a pocket passer it seems. Youth floods the league, and every team is in search of the next best edge to win, starting with the QB position.

IDP Wrap Up: Week 9

Micah Parsons has emerged as an absolute game-changer in his rookie crusade for Dallas this year. This weekend, the first-round pick did everything he could to help his team against the Broncos. In the loss, Parson had a line of 10 total tackles, three TFLs, and 2.5 sacks from his off-ball linebacker spot. If you used your high-end draft capital on Parsons this offseason, you are living the dream at this point in his young career.

Rapid Reaction: Cam Newton’s Homecoming

Cam Newton is coming home. After the news broke of Sam Darnold’s shoulder injury, most likely forcing him to IR, the Panthers were left with a predicament. Do they leave their season in the hands of former XFL star P.J. Walker? Or do they look for a veteran on the market? Well, here comes Cam!

Redraft Waiver Wire Grind: Week 10

It was announced today that Sam Darnold is likely to miss a few weeks with a fractured scapula. This means that P.J. Walker is going to be Carolina’s starter for the foreseeable future. We know just how valuable the quarterback position is in non-one quarterback leagues due to it being the highest ceiling and floor position. When one of the NFL’s 32 quarterbacks is on the free market it’s a must-add. To be realistic, P.J. Walker isn’t someone we are ecstatic about. In 2020 he had 56 pass attempts, good for a 57.0 PFF passing grade. Which is quite bad. For reference, that would put him 31/35 amongst all QBs in 2020. He had five total rush attempts last year. I would be treating P.J. Walker on the FAAB market like a Geno Smith-light.

One Week Ahead: Part 8

After the Atlanta Falcons drafted Kyle Pitts, fellow tight end Hayden Hurst became the forgotten man among the fantasy community. While he hasn’t made too much of an impact, he is still seeing some work in the passing game. Coming off a week eight where he played on 62% of the offensive snaps, Hurst is still seeing the field a good amount.

IDP Wrap Up: Week 6

It was only a matter of time before this Wisconsin Alum made it into the top performers list. Coming off of his worst game of the year, Watt made up for his poor week five in a big way against Seattle Sunday. The fifth-year veteran produced seven total tackles, a TFL, a forced fumble, two sacks, and three defended passes in the game. Watt continues to be a strong IDP option, especially in sack premium leagues, so start him every week with confidence.

Rookie Stock Report: Week 6

Khalil Herbert is set to be Chicago’s RB1 for Week 6 after an injury to David Montgomery and Damien Williams being placed on the Covid list. Fortunately enough Herbert has looked like a better prospect than his draft stock would indicate and has made the most of his touches. Herbert is an explosive downhill runner that is a better backup to Montgomery than Williams. If I could get him for cheap he’s a stash I’d love to have stashed on my roster.

IDP Wrap Up: Week 5

Haason Reddick came in as the top defensive lineman of week five, pestering Jalen Hurts all day long. The former Temple star has really found a home in the Carolina defense, and his statistics are proof of exactly that. On Sunday, Reddick stacked up two sacks, eight total tackles, and two TFLs at home against the Eagles.
