IDP Wrap Up: Week 5

What We Learned This Week

The Eagles’ defense put it all together on Sunday. Philadelphia’s defenders were taking on the Panthers in Carolina and played well from the opening snap to the final whistle. The feisty unit produced three interceptions, three sacks, and a block in the victory. IDP players of note include Alex Singleton, Darius Slay, and Steven Nelson.

Buffalo came through with an awesome win on the road in Kansas City on Sunday. The Bills’ defense was the key, as the squad put up two sacks, two interceptions, two recovered fumbles and a touchdown in the victory against the Patrick Mahomes led Chiefs. Gregory Rousseau, Taron Johnson, and Micah Hyde had nice games for Buffalo. 

The Vikings’ defense did what they needed to do to beat the Lions on Sunday. Kirk Cousins was stymied by Detroit for much of the game, but the Vikings defenders stepped up, accumulating four sacks, an interception, and a fumble recovery throughout the afternoon. Players who made an IDP impact were Everson Griffen, Eric Kendricks, and Harrison Smith.

Top Player Performances

Kevin Byard – S – TENNESSEE TITANS

After a relatively slow start to the 2021 season, Byard, came out firing against the Jaguars, producing a monster performance in week five. The sixth-year veteran had 10 total tackles, a fumble recovery, an interception, two passes defended and he scored a touchdown on the day. Byard, considered by most managers to be a weekly starter, just elevated his status to a must-start stud after this performance.

Derwin James – S – LOS ANGELES CHARGERS

It’s really exciting to see James on this list after two tough, injury-riddled, years for the dynamic safety.  The 2018 first-round pick racked up 17 total tackles, one TFL, one forced fumble, and one sack this weekend. If you invested in James over the years, you are living large right now.

Haason Reddick – DE – CAROLINA PANTHERS

Reddick came in as the top defensive lineman of week five, pestering Jalen Hurts all day long. The former Temple star has really found a home in the Carolina defense, and his statistics are proof of exactly that. On Sunday, Reddick stacked up two sacks, eight total tackles, and two TFLs at home against the Eagles. 

Notable Injuries

Lavonte David– LB – TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

David is expected to miss a few weeks with an ankle sprain that he sustained in Sunday’s win over the Dolphins. The pro bowl linebacker will be missed by a defense already ravaged by injuries. K.J. Britt will likely see additional snaps with David unavailable.

Myles Jack – LB – JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

Prior to week five, Jack played every defensive snap over the previous three games, but on Sunday he was limited to 34 snaps due to an oblique injury. The 26-year-old is considered day-to-day, but his participation at practice this week should provide an idea of his potential availability for week six. Shaquille Quarterman would likely see a bump in snaps if Jack were out this week.
