Adjusting the Ranks: Psych Ward’s 2022 Rookie Rankings

We have a mantra at Dynasty Football Factory that has propelled a focus on consistent construction and evaluation of our dynasty rosters: #AlwaysBeBuilding. My rankings are built with the same forward direction. I aspire to be as transparent as possible in my process to provide you with a better understanding of how to value players.

These rankings will be continuously updated to reflect an ever-improving player evaluation process. Allow me to walk you through some of the essential anchors I base these rankings around.

Process

Remove Bias

I attempt to eliminate bias and fandom from my process altogether. Every player is put through the same rigorous standard to decipher a proper ranking founded on insulated value and current production.

Market Value Source

Player value and rankings are consistently cross-referenced with all expert consensus rankings on major platforms. Orders and values are adjusted to reflect a combination of market consensus and personal evaluation.

Historical Data

Historical analytics are used to reference the “stickiness” of a player’s ranking based on age, production, and previous ADP. To better understand how historical ADP affects a player’s congruent future value, check out Bulletproof BeanCounter’s thread on Twitter.

Future Outlook/Range of Outcomes

Rankings will favor players in stable team situations with a strong future outlook. The range of outcomes (R.O.O) is based on historical statistical thresholds and cross-compared with several reference points such as DFF’s Ian Miller’s R.O.O model.

Rookie Rankings

Rookies are evaluated based on collective metrics of college production, athletic scores, combined stats, and draft/landing spot. Talent will always reign supreme when ranking rookies. Advanced college analytics are self-adjusted and cross-referenced with Pahowdy’s CFB Database for accuracy.

ADJUSTING THE RANKS

Dynasty startup drafts are in full swing. The current 2022 rookie player pool has entered the fold across all platforms. Understanding where to take advantage of rookie value in startup drafts can provide managers with a competitive advantage. As DFF rolls out our dynasty rookie rankings for the 2022 season and beyond, I wanted to explain a few of my picks that are against expert consensus. Here, we take a look at three key running back prospects in comparison to startup ADP as opposed to a simplified four-round dynasty rookie draft.

BREECE HALL RB (IOWA STATE)

Rookie Rank: 1.01

Dynasty Rank: RB 7 / 34 OVR

1QB, 1RB, Superflex, IDP, I don’t care what format your league is in; Breece Hall is the undisputed 1.01 in rookie drafts. Hall is an elite running back prospect with all the intangibles to make a significant impact as soon as he steps on the pro field.

Prospect fatigue caused a recent decrease in sustained hype and dynasty value for Hall. Managers seemingly got bored of his continued three-year dominance at Iowa State. A stunning showing at the 2022 NFL Combine returned said hype to a fever pitch.

Official Combine Results:

Height: 5′ 11″

Weight: 217 lbs

Arms: 31 1/4″

Hands: 9 3/4″

40 Yard Dash: 4.39s

Vertical Jump: 40″

Broad Jump: 126″

Hall’s Post-Combine Market Report further demonstrates his heightened value and perceived high-level production once entering the league. In startup drafts, look to target Hall in the third round as one of the top-ten running backs off the board.

RACHAAD WHITE RB (ARIZONA STATE)

Rookie Rank: 2.01

Dynasty Rank: RB 25 / 96 OVR

Rachaad White exploded onto the scene in his final year at Arizona State. His impressive production in a full-time role caught the eyes of NFL scouts and fantasy managers alike, making White one of the more intriguing prospects entering this year’s draft.

White possesses the prototypical size and build of an early-down bruiser, with the quickness and agility of a more polished elusive running back. Officially listed at 6′ 0″ and 217 lbs, White’s athletic testing is amongst the top of the class.

DFF Author Chris Miles (@ChrisMiles1017)  and film analyst Nick Penticoff (@NickPenticoff) recently highlighted White’s eye-popping profile in the series: Rookie Prospecting Through Data. Miles and Penticoff shower White in the highest of praise from both an analytical and film perspective, touting the prospect with “league-winning upside.”

I expect White to carve out an early role at the NFL level. If draft capital meets the supposed hype, White could have immediate flex appeal on your dynasty rosters with the potential upside of a high-end RB2 in his introductory season.

TYLER BADIE RB (MISSOURI)

Rookie Rank: 2.07

Dynasty Rank: RB 38 / 140 OVR

You may already be familiar with Tyler Badie’s shocking market share and dominator ratings from the Rookie Prospecting Through Data articles. Badie carried the scoring load of Missouri’s run-heavy approach, accumulating >70% of the team’s rushing touchdowns. Considered an undersized, pass-catching running back, Badie proved his frame would not slow down an increased workload as a rusher.

Badie checks all of the boxes of a massive sleeper in PPR formats. He profiles as one of the best receiving backs of the 2022 draft class. Badie also harnesses maturity and patience as a ball-carrier. His strong hands are evident in securing passes away from his body and fighting through contact in the trenches.

I currently have Badie ranked outside of RB3 territory, with a small gap separating him from the rest of the tier. However, if managers are looking for a late anchor at the running back position with immense PPR upside, Badie is an excellent target.
