We all know what a crapshoot the tight end position can be in fantasy football. The top five to six players at the position have a very projectable workload and, barring injury, we can expect the likes of Kelce, Kittle, and Andrews to be dominant. Austin Hooper was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft. Through his first four seasons in the NFL, Hooper has seen his targets, receptions, yards, and touchdowns all increased year over year. His most productive season was in 2019. Hauling in 75 catches, 787 yards, and six scores in only 13 games. This offensive output had Hooper finishing the season at TE6 in PPR formats.

The Patriots took Devin Asiasi in the 3rd round of this year’s draft. He was the second tight end taken, coming off the board in front of the likes of Adam Trautman and Harrison Bryant, both of whom had higher draft grades, according to NFL.com. However, it is not surprising to see the Patriots deviate from the status quo, and Asiasi brings some nice traits as a rookie tight end (even if they aren’t immediately apparent).

The Broncos drafted Fant with the 20th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, making him the second tight end selected after his Iowa teammate T.J. Hockenson. At Iowa, Fant totaled 1,013 yards and 18 touchdowns in his final two seasons. While Hockenson broke out and outproduced him in 2018, Fant still had a solid season, improving in both receptions and yards. Hockenson was the top tight end for NFL teams due to his superior blocking skills, but Fant profiled as a speedy receiving threat. Fant was a perfect prospect for the new, pass-happy NFL.

For Old Tom, there are not many things more enjoyable than writing about athletes with fun nicknames. Enter, John “Smokey” Brown. Coming off the WR20 (PPR) finish, in his first go-around with the Buffalo Bills, Mr. Brown is poised to continue this level of production, at the very least, in 2020. When I look at the addition of Stefon Diggs, to this ball club, I continue to find myself liking Brown all the more. In my mind, Mr. Diggs is as talented as they come, and the clear-cut WR1 on this roster. For John Brown and his fantasy outlook, this is the best news he could have received. Think of it like this – for all of 2019, John Brown wore a nice set of Fragraim adjustable ankle weights.

Warring fits the specifications of a fantasy football “sleeper” candidate like a glove. He has the willingness and competitiveness to handle run-blocking duties, and the talent to line up in the slot. Versatility is valuable in the NFL. If Warring wins the primary TE job for the Texans, he should be capable of staying on the field for the majority of the snaps. Having just turned 23 this offseason, any role Kahale carves out this coming season should be maintained, with the potential for growth into more opportunities, provided he stays healthy. He can be acquired late in drafts or for very minimal assets via trade in most dynasty leagues, and may even be available on waivers in a few.

Back in April, I wrote about Rob Gronkowski’s return to the NFL, as he came out of retirement to join the Buccaneers. While Gronkowski is one of the best tight ends of all time, the Buccaneers already had a solid young tight end in O.J. Howard. Higbee is one of my favorite 2020 values at tight end, coming in at TE6 in my redraft rankings. He’s in the same tier as Hunter Henry and Evan Engram, but neither of those players has anywhere close to Higbee’s upside. The Rams’ offense should improve from 2019, as quarterback Jared Goff had almost the same yardage in 2018 and 2019 but threw 10 fewer touchdowns. I expect to have many Higbee shares in my 2020 redraft leagues, and I would love to have him on my dynasty team.

In the late rounds of redraft leagues, I’m always hunting for upside. There’s no point in playing it safe and taking boring contributors that provide no opportunity to make a difference or to be league-winners. These four players are an example of what I’m talking about, one at each position. I’m not saying that any of these players will hit, and I would bet against some of them doing so. Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku has requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns via his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. The veteran sports agent and notorious bare-knuckles negotiator has almost certainly taken public a request made to the team shortly after another former first-rounder from the same position, Hayden Hurst demanded a trade from the Ravens to the Falcons earlier this year. Poetically and characteristically, Rosenhaus aired his demand for his client’s freedom from the league’s most unstable franchise on the eve of Independence Day. Timing is also of the essence because training camps open in a mere three weeks’ time.

There’s a big strategic difference between Superflex and tight end premium. Superflex requires or at least allows an extra starter at the quarterback position. Since quarterbacks score far more fantasy points than any other position, it almost always makes sense to start a second quarterback in that slot.
On the other hand, tight ends score the least of all the main fantasy positions. It’s possible to use a 2TE format to force fantasy owners to value tight ends. However, there are barely 12 fantasy-relevant tight ends in the league, let alone 24. Forcing people to start 24 tight ends every week isn’t a fair or viable fantasy format, in my view. It introduces even more randomness, as the bottom tight ends are wholly touchdown-dependent players.

Gronk is back! I feel like I needed to get that out of the way. If anybody doesn’t know, on April 21st, Gronkowski came out of retirement. Everything moved at a breakneck pace on that day. First, Ian Rapoport reported that Gronkowski wanted to unretire and join Tom Brady in Tampa Bay. A few hours later, the Buccaneers and Patriots agreed on a trade to send Gronkowski and a seventh-round pick for a fourth-round pick. Soon after that, Gronkowski officially passed a physical, which finalized the deal. Therefore, Gronkowski had gone from retired in the morning to officially part of the Buccaneers in just a few hours.
Jonnu Smith and Noah Fant appeared in my column four times each. In those eight appearances, there was just one hit, when Smith finished as the TE3 in Week 8. Other than that, they finished outside of the top 20 each additional time I recommended streaming them. Considering that Fant finished as the TE14 and Smith as the TE19 for the 2019 season, perhaps some of this was just variance. They weren’t bad recommendations in general, but they didn’t hit the weeks that I selected them as streamers.

If I had to describe Ebron’s prevailing narrative, I would say that most dynasty owners consider Ebron to be a complete bust, who then had one outlier season in 2018 before fading back to normal in 2019. However, that narrative isn’t real. Ebron was consistently mediocre from 2015-2017, finishing as a high-end TE2 in each year.
