Buy Sell: Championship Week

In lieu of a standard opening this week, we’d just like to say one last thank you for reading our work all year. We hope we’ve helped you make championships, or at least enjoy fantasy football a little more. It’s an incredibly fun and emotionally-taxing game we play. If we’ve helped you have even a tiny bit more fun, we’re quite grateful. Zach and I will raise a glass to you, dear readers, and wish you much luck in this all-important championship week.

Buy/Sell: Round Two Matchups and Dynasty Targets

Hockenson is TE3 on the year in half-point PPR and has been a consistent fantasy asset all season. Hockenson’s floor is very high and he has an average ceiling as well. Week 15 brings a matchup against a very mediocre Titans defense. The Titans’ offense, on the other hand, is elite. I envision this game getting a bit ugly early which could lead to even more junk time points for Hockenson. You are never not starting Hockenson, but week 15 projects as a potential monster week for him in your lineup. Additionally, if you play dynasty, Hockenson projects as at worst a top-five option at the position moving forward. He is an elite option both in the 2020 fantasy playoffs and moving forward.

Buy/Sell: Round One Matchups and Dynasty Targets

Playoff time is here at last! Did you make it? Sure hope so. Playoffs are the best. It doesn’t matter if you snuck in at 6-7 or ran the table and locked up a first-round bye. From here on out, you win or you go home. That fact is why playoff matchups matter so much. It doesn’t matter if you spent a high-round pick on a guy or if he won you a handful of matchups this year. That was then, this is now. You have to be honest about how that player will perform this week because this week is the only thing that matters. You have to be in it to win it, so play the guys who will keep you in it. In addition to some interesting playoff matchups, we’re also running through some of the players that interest us from a dynasty perspective for those of you who are already looking forward to 2021. Best of luck to those of you in the playoffs, and happy offseason trading to you dynasty readers.

Week 12 Buy/Sell

Well, the last week of the fantasy season is finally upon us for the majority of leagues. As such, this is the last week of Buy/Sell as you know it. We’ll be here throughout the playoffs with some matchups we love for each week, just in case your league allows for trades during the playoffs. We’ll also be discussing some players we’re looking forward to drafting (or avoiding) next year, so get ready for that. Before we get into the buys and sells for the final week of the season, we’d just like to say a sincere thank you for reading. Whether this is your first time checking out the article or you’ve been with us all season, thank you! It’s been a blast writing this thing, and we hope we’ve helped you with your transactions this year. On to the final week!

Happy Thanksgiving! What an amazing holiday this is. All I’m thinking about is mashed potatoes. I always make the mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving, no matter how many people are attending (I wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving). I do this because I need the mashed potatoes to be perfect on Thanksgiving. The mashed potatoes are the glue that binds the perfect Thanksgiving bite together. You take some turkey (dark meat for me, please), some stuffing, some gravy and add it to your mashed potatoes and you get the ultimate culinary delight. Nothing better than that.

Week 10 Buy/Sell

You know who’s fun? Kyler Murray. He’s just amazing to watch. I have no idea how his legs move so quickly. He’s also smart. He gets slides to avoid hits better than any NFL player I’ve ever seen. What a fun player to watch. You know who is also fun? DeAndre Hopkins. Zach and I have friends who are Texans’ fans and it’s just ridiculously fun to dunk on the trade that sent Hopkins to Arizona. Nuk is an absolute baller and that trade was a travesty. Now… you know what’s not fun? When Kyler threw up what is now being called the Hail Murray to Hopkins to win on Sunday. Why was it not fun? Because it allowed Zach to beat me by six points. Yeah… not fun. So let’s talk about something that is fun. How about some trade targets!

Week 9 Buy/Sell

We’re getting down to it. For most leagues, there are only four weeks left in the regular season. Some of your leagues may have trade deadlines coming up, so it’s time to start taking extra time to look into remaining matchups for your key contributors. If you’ve locked in your playoff spot, now is the time to lock in those handcuffs and start thinking about matchups in those crucial playoff weeks. If you’re still on the bubble, you may need to swing big for a player who can produce now. You can’t win it all if you don’t even make the dance. Here are some players to buy and sell this week who could get you in, and maybe take you all the way.

Week 8 Buy/Sell

We sometimes talk too much in hypotheticals in this piece, so let’s talk about a real trade that went down this week. I dealt David Montgomery and CeeDee Lamb for Tyler Boyd and Le’Veon Bell. My point here is not to talk about myself, but to discuss the process of how the trade came together. Montgomery was a solid if uninspiring piece who was burning a hole on my bench. After losing OBJ to injury and taking hits on both Lamb and DeVante Parker due to quarterback changes, I needed a solid WR to complement my RB-heavy team. I looked up a number of rest-of-season rankings to see what WRs were in the Montgomery area and found that Boyd was right there. This is where I had to read the room.

Week 7 Buy/Sell

I should have trusted my gut. I needed to stream a tight end on Sunday and I had a sneaky good feeling about one of them. My starter, Tyler Higbee, was in danger of missing out on Monday Night Football due to injury. Anytime you have a starter with an injury designation playing on Monday, you know you need a backup plan. I checked every ranking I could, and they all told me that my best available options were Dalton Schultz and Darren Fells. I had a feeling about a different guy, but it’s tough to make that call when the best people in the industry have him ranked seven or eight spots below. I picked Darren Fells, who had scored in two straight games and saw seven targets last week.

The guy I had a gut feeling about? He went out and scored two touchdowns. Trust your gut, people. I could’ve had Harrison Bryant. If only I had a friend who writes this column with me and has been talking up Bryant since the draft. If only…

Week 6 Buy/Sell

Six weeks is a long time. Remember last year, when Joe Mixon was RB32 and DJ Chark was WR2 through the first six games? We had seen six weeks of evidence that Mixon was an unquestionable bust and that Chark was the next big thing. Chark had a bit more than double Mixon’s points in standard scoring. If you had traded Chark away for Joe Mixon at that point, let’s just say that some eyebrows would have been raised. That would have been a bold move, but it would have been the right move. Mixon scored 145 to Chark’s 70 standard points from weeks 7-17.

Of course, you’re never going to get the timing right on trades like these. The point here is to be bold. If you believe in a player, go get him. Here are some guys we’re looking to get, and some we’re looking to get rid of.

Week 4 Buy/Sell

Well, that was a weird week. Did we just have two Monday Night Football games and a week four bye? Why yes… yes we did. In all honesty, props to the NFL for getting that Chiefs vs. Patriots rescheduled for Monday night. That game certainly caused a good number of fantasy commissioners to scramble for backup plans and contingency scenarios. Now hopefully we will continue to get good news about the Titans containing the COVID outbreak that left us (read: me) without Derrick Henry last week. Regularly scheduled bye weeks are upon us, which means the pool of legitimate starting players is shrinking even more. Time to get to trading. Check out who we’re buying and selling after the first four weeks of the season.

Week 2 Buy/Sell

Can we have a redo on week two? That was B-R-U-T-A-L! We lost Saquon and Courtland Sutton for the year, and CMC for weeks. Week one waiver wire darling Parris will miss time with a PCL injury. Will Fuller (of course) and Davante Adams are dealing with hamstring issues. Raheem Mostert took it 80 yards to the house with his first carry and then proceeded to sprain his MCL. Who did I miss? It seemed as if fantasy managers were taking one punch to the gut after another on Sunday. Whether or not you survived the injury onslaught in week two, your team could probably use some tinkering. Here are our favorite buys and sells of the week.

The 2020 Exposure Report

When it comes to fantasy football, we fall in love every year. During our offseason research, sleepers and favorites emerge. There are guys every season that you just have to have. But how many of those guys actually end up on your team? As buzz grows around your favorite players, ADP becomes your enemy and can end up thwarting your plans. All of a sudden, the guy you were getting in the seventh round of mock drafts all offseason costs you a fourth. You’re not alone. Here is my 2020 exposure report. It contains guys who I have a lot invested in based on where I could get them and some dudes who I wish I could have drafted more often.

The Guide: A Round-by-Round Roadmap to Acing Your 2020 Fantasy Draft

I get the same email every year. It usually comes in the first couple of days in September. It’s from a friend who I used to work with. This person is extremely competitive; the kind of person who hates losing more than loves winning. The email is a call for help. My friend knows almost nothing about fantasy football, but wants to crush the people in the fantasy league she was invited to a few years back. I love writing the reply because it allows me to finalize my draft strategy after months of mock drafts and research. This year, I’m happy to make that strategy public. Here it is… the guide!

Fantasy MVP Hangover: RB Edition

Fantasy MVP Hangover: RBs

I started playing fantasy football in 2006. That was the year LaDainian Tomlinson set the fantasy (and NFL) world on fire. He rushed for over 1,800 yards, caught 56 passes for over 500 yards, and scored 31 total touchdowns. Tomlinson scored a whopping 453 half-PPR points that season. He was the RB1 by a margin of 82 points. That fact is even more incredible when you realize that only eight running backs have topped 350 half-PPR points in the last 14 years, and two of those guys did it the same season as Tomlinson. That’s right, three of the top eight running back seasons of my entire fantasy football life came in that 2006 season. Of course, the league was different back then. Derrick Henry led all running backs in carries last year with 303. That would have tied for tenth in 2006. Tenth!

The 2020 All-Uglies

Everyone wants the hot new thing. As kids, we all wanted the brand new toy for Christmas and turned our noses up at the pairs of socks we sometimes got instead. Now that we are adults we want the cool new sports car instead of the pre-owned Honda. It’s the same in fantasy football. Everybody wants to be the guy who drafts the young running back who vaults himself into the first round next year. We all target those third-year wide receivers looking for that elusive breakout. But you know what? Those socks are a good present. They get the job done and you use them all the time. That pre-owned Honda is reliable and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to maintain. You can find similar values every year in fantasy football. No one in your draft room will let out a sigh of relief when you take one of these guys, but they’ll get the job done for you. These are the used cars and Christmas socks of the 2020 fantasy season. I present to you 2020 All-Uglies.

Auction Draft Do's and Dont's

Auction Draft Do’s and Don’ts – Part One

Let’s start with a simple, unequivocal, and in-no-way subjective fact: auction drafts are the best drafts. Auction drafts are more fun, they reward savvy fantasy players more than snake drafts, and they allow you to grab any player you’re willing to break the bank for. But how do you make the most of your bankroll and come away with a winning team? Here’s what to do… and what NOT to do.
