NFL Combine: “Does Size Matter?” Quarterback Edition

The NFL Combine officially kicked off this week, beginning with medical testing, team interviews, and of course, in-person measurements. NCAA schools are notorious for exaggerating size (aren’t we all). The combine gives us our first look at true-to-life measurements, including height, weight, wingspan, hand size, and BMI.

Pre-Combine 2022 Rookie Positional Rankings – QB

Your author has broken down his pre-combine rookie rankings into positional rankings with tier designations to help you better view the dynasty rookie draft landscape. It is important to remember these rankings are created with fantasy football purposes in mind. We will dive eight players deep with the QB and TE positions and ten players deep with the RB and WR positions. Up first, the QB position is detailed for the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft.

Positioning Your Squad(s) for 2022 Dynasty Rookie Drafts

When you compare the top of this class to 2021 it clarifies the point further. Treylon Burks is a BMW 7 Series while Ja’Marr Chase is an Aston Martin One-77. Trey McBride is the Outback Special while Kyle Pitts is a dry-aged A5 Wagyu Ribeye. Breece Hall is a dart throw from six feet away while Najee Harris is a dart throw from three feet away. Trevor Lawrence, Trey Lance, and Justin Fields were each thought of as top dynasty quarterbacks (QBs) for the next decade. We aren’t sure if any of these QBs from 2022 will be starters after their rookie contracts play out. We also know 2023 has elite prospects in Bryce Young, Bijan Robinson, CJ Stroud, Jaxson Smith-Njigba, and Kayshon Boutte. I would take these four above any of the 2022 prospects.

2022 DFF Superflex Rookie Mock Draft 1.0

Six members of the DFF Army got together to conduct an early Superflex 2022 Rookie Mock Draft, everyone doubled up on teams to make it reflect a 12-team league and, for fairness of randomly generated draft spot we decided to pick in a snake format, rather than the typical fixed order that rookie drafts are conducted in. I will also provide some insights on the picks based on my personal analysis.

These games were highlighted by Clemson’s loss to Georgia in Week Zero, as well as Ohio State’s loss to Oregon and Iowa State’s loss to Iowa in Week One. We will now discuss some of the individual player performances and draft stock movement!

Sam Howell-UNC

Devy Players of the Week

After a disappointing individual performance in a Week 1 loss to Virginia Tech, the Junior 6’1″ 220 lbs. QB bounced back in a big way against the clearly outmatched Georgia State Panthers. In Week 2 Howell completed 72.4% of his passes for 353 yards and three touchdowns and zero interceptions, a stark improvement from his 53.1% completion percentage and one touchdown with three interceptions. However, what got Sam Howell on the list today was he rushing in Week 2. Howell gashed Georgia State for 104 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

Soothsayers Roundtable: Quarterback Carousel

Beware of the Ides of March, the date March 15th was viewed by the Ancient Romans as a deadline for settling debts. The year was 44 BC and the Soothsayers informed the Dictator that their readings indicated death. A soothsayer is a minor priest also known as a haruspex, otherwise known for practicing animal sacrifice and reading the remnants of the body for signs from their deities. The practice of animal sacrifice is very similar to us fantasy players praying to the fantasy gods for a player they roster to get put back in for the goal line work as they fret a close competition. Back in Ancient Rome, the dictators and government generals would often consult with the Soothsayers regarding future war campaigns.

Devy Player Comps: Class of 2022

In this article, I will take you through the top devy options that are eligible for the 2022 NFL Draft. We will look at their listed measurements according to their college programs as well as their projected 40-yard dash times. We will project 40-yard dash times by taking their high school combine testing results and adjusting them based on the expected positional progression as these players progress from being 18-year-old kids to 21-year-old NFL players. We will also use film analysis to tweak these projected times on a player-to-player basis. Finally we will look at players who tested similarly to create a superimposed range of outcomes for these players. Let’s dive in with the top options from the class of 2022.

Desmond Ridder: 2021 Devy Profile

At 6’4” 215 lbs. Desmond Ridder was in the conversation with Mac Jones and Kyle Trask to be the QB5 in the 2021 draft class. However, he opted to return to Cincinnati for his senior season. The former three-star-recruit has come a long way and enters the 2021 season with hopes of making a case for himself as a top-three QB.

February DFF Devy Mock Draft: Round 1

We composed a four-person mock draft at DFF to start collecting devy rank data. For some people, a devy-only draft will be coming up soon, while for others the only draft of the season will be a blended rookie and devy draft after the NFL Draft takes place. We will go over how to value devy players versus rookie players later in this offseason, but for now, let’s dive into the devy debates.

DFF Devy Top Five Positions: 2022 Quarterbacks

Spencer Rattler was the QB1 and 11th overall prospect coming out of high school. The five-star Arizona native chose to play for Lincoln Riley in Oklahoma. After sitting out for the 2019 season behind Jalen Hurts, Rattler was allowed to start during his redshirt freshman season in 2020. The 6’1” 205 lbs. quarterback is still developing, but we expect to see him drafted early in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Sam Howell-UNC

Sam Howell: 2021 Devy Profile

At the time of writing, betting odds place Sam Howell as one of the top five players most likely to win the 2022 Heisman Trophy. With the departure of teammates Javonte Williams, Michael Carter, and Dyami Brown, the Tarheel offense faces an uphill battle. If Howell is able to put up similar numbers after losing several heavy hitters to the NFL, it will set a lot of people at ease that it was talent and not merely the situation that led to Howell’s success.

Draft Stock Watch: Week 5

Each week I will bring you the latest updates and NFL buzz surrounding college players that should prove to be integral to future fantasy success. I will utilize recent statistics, performance and film, and general “front office whispers” to compile the intel I share with you. My hope is to provide you with a leg up on your opponents. You will know which devy players to target in trades and/or in what range of draft picks (both NFL and fantasy drafts) you can expect these players to be selected. If you want to read last week’s article, click here.

Week five of the college football season is now in the books, and although it seems cliché to say this, the weekend brought us even more surprises than previous weeks. We witnessed eight ranked teams fall on Saturday, further muddying the college football landscape before the BIG10, and eventually, the PAC12 teams join the ranks. Let’s discuss some of this past weekend’s player performances and draft stock movement!
