“Raiding the IDP Waiver Wire” is written for fantasy football gamers in leagues that require a full complement of 11 defensive starters in leagues of 12 to 16 teams. Recommendations rely on scoring settings from FantasyPros.com, even though their value for passes defensed is a bit low. We’ll look for options at both conventional and true defensive positions as they arise. Players qualifying for this column are those rostered in no more than a third of IDP leagues on MyFantasyLeague.com (MFL). These recommendations further assume you, the manager, have finite roster space with challenging cut decisions to add new names.

IDP Wrap Up: Week 6

It was only a matter of time before this Wisconsin Alum made it into the top performers list. Coming off of his worst game of the year, Watt made up for his poor week five in a big way against Seattle Sunday. The fifth-year veteran produced seven total tackles, a TFL, a forced fumble, two sacks, and three defended passes in the game. Watt continues to be a strong IDP option, especially in sack premium leagues, so start him every week with confidence.

Haason Reddick came in as the top defensive lineman of week five, pestering Jalen Hurts all day long. The former Temple star has really found a home in the Carolina defense, and his statistics are proof of exactly that. On Sunday, Reddick stacked up two sacks, eight total tackles, and two TFLs at home against the Eagles.

IDP Wrap Up: Week 4

The Buffalo Bills pitched a shutout playing against a depleted Houston offense Sunday in New York. Week 5 will be a lot tougher, as the team has to square off against the Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs, but this week the Buffalo defenders dominated. In the effort, the team defense created three sacks, a fumble recovery, and four interceptions to secure the win. IDP players of note for the Bills include Tremaine Edmunds, Cam Lewis, and Star Lotulelei.

IDP Wrap Up: Week 3

The Cleveland Browns pass rush went nuclear on the Justin Fields and Matt Nagy-led Chicago Bears. In the 26-6 blowout, the pass rushers put up nine sacks! Chicago had no answers for the likes of Myles Garrett (see below) and Jadeveon Clowney. Coming up next, the Browns have the Vikings followed by the Chargers, two offenses that should hold their own a little better. That said, continue to start your Browns defensive studs.

The Arizona Cardinals played a terrific game in Tennessee on Sunday. The defensive unit held Derrick Henry in check and pestered Ryan Tannehill all day long. In total, defenders racked up six sacks, two fumble recoveries, and an interception against a strong offense on the road. Two days ago, the Jacksonville Jaguars sent stand-out linebacker Joe Schobert to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a move that further underscores the rebuild under Head Coach Urban Meyer’s new regime. News of the compensation trickled out a day later; just a 2022 sixth-round pick landed Schobert. Clearly, the move was a salary dump for the Jaguars.

“Hard Knocks” Premiere: Micah Parsons Shines

I’ve long been a huge fan of the HBO series “Hard Knocks” since its premiere in 2001. Outside of the expected silliness ranging from former Jets’ HC Rex Ryan’s “let’s get a snack” quote to Vince Wilfork’s “naked overalls” episode with the Texans, the show always does a fantastic job of hyping me up for the NFL season. So when the Cowboys were chosen for this year’s series, I mildly cringed at the idiocy that was inbound. And, spoiler alert, Mike McCarthy delivers in droves via an Austin Powers movie clip and fake bravado that brought on a mild panic attack. Yes, it’s insulting to the viewer but even more so to Mike Meyers who’s probably on the line with Jerry Jones negotiating compensation as I write this.

Leave Your IDP Draft With Zach Cunningham

The player I can’t leave my draft without is Zach Cunningham. While a bit of an obvious choice, I want to make sure everyone is aware of who he is and the situation that surrounds him. Accountability is paramount in this business, and last season your author swung big on both Montez Sweat and Ifeadi Odenigbo. One was a home run and the other was a strike-out. Montez Sweat broke out for a double-digit sack season playing across from top draft pick Chase Young, as well as in tandem with fellow defensive interior players Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen, who each boast first-round draft capital of their own. Ifeadi Odenigbo, on the other hand, was not accompanied by perennial all-pro Danielle Hunter, who threatened to hold out before opting for surgery to repair an injury. He ended up missing the entire season and the Vikings’ entire pass rush struggled.

Scheme or Scam: Dallas Cowboys

In 2020 Dynasty Football Factory launched a series titled “Schemes Are Ch-Ch-Changing”. Each edition of the series explored how a new defensive coordinator would affect defenders as fantasy assets. The David Bowie song “Changes” would roll through my head as I started each article. I admit it; by the sixth or seventh article, I began to cringe at the title. I reached out to the team at DFF for ideas. Thus, I give you “Scheme or Scam.” The premise remains. I will investigate for each article how a new defensive scheme will deploy defenders and how that will translate to fantasy value. I write about this because it’s information I sought out and could not find when I began playing IDP fantasy football just a few years ago.

DFF Draft Coverage: Gregory Rousseau to the Bills

Gregory Rousseau is a part of the enormous list of players that hurt their draft stock by opting out. Ja’Marr Chase and Micah Parsons were the only two players whose opt-outs didn’t affect their draft capital.  Unfortunately, our man Gregory Rousseau made a bad decision. Your author wrote about this back in September in the weekly seasonal “Draft Stock Watch” series. There is no arguing Rousseau’s superior athletic ability and speed around the edge. The DE out of Miami trailed only 2020 number two overall pick Chase Young in total sacks in the entire FBS in 2019.
