What We Learned This Week
The Buffalo Bills pitched a shutout playing against a depleted Houston offense Sunday in New York. Week 5 will be a lot tougher, as the team has to square off against the Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs, but this week the Buffalo defenders dominated. In the effort, the team defense created three sacks, a fumble recovery, and four interceptions to secure the win. IDP players of note for the Bills include Tremaine Edmunds, Cam Lewis, and Star Lotulelei.
The only other team to produce multiple interceptions in Week 4 were the Dallas Cowboys, who were able to corral two INTs to go along with five sacks of Sam Darnold this week. Looking ahead, the Cowboys have meetings with the Giants and the Patriots, both of which present a nice opportunity for the Dallas defenders. Studs who came through versus Carolina were Trevon Diggs, Anthony Brown, and Randy Gregory.
In a very odd game this weekend, the New York Jets defense recorded seven sacks to lead the team to their first victory of the season, beating the Titans in overtime. I continue to keep expectations low for Jets players, but registering a seven-sack performance is a rare feat and must be acknowledged. Players to track after their monster week include Quincy Williams, Quinnen Williams, and C.J. Mosley.
Top Player Performances
Quincy Williams – LB and Quinnen Williams – DT – NEW YORK JETS
For the first time ever, brothers recorded sacks for the same team in the same game this weekend. The Williams duo wrecked plenty of Titans drives with their pass rush on Sunday. The Williams brothers combined, for 19 total tackles, three TFLs, three sacks, and a pass defended. It’s unlikely either of these stars are still available in Dynasty IDP leagues, but if either of them are available in your league, you should certainly scoop them up.
Sebastian Joseph-Day – DT – LOS ANGELES RAMS
Joseph-Day had a gem of a game against the Cardinals this weekend. The Rutgers alum was credited with eight total tackles, a TFL, and a sack in the game. At 26 years old, the DT is on track for 90+ total tackles and over eight sacks on the season. His line will certainly regress somewhat, but Joseph-Day will continue to produce solid numbers, so keep playing him as a high ceiling defensive tackle.
Eric Stokes – CB – GREEN BAY PACKERS
The first rookie to make an appearance in the top performers list in 2021, Stokes was all over the field on Sunday for the Packers. The first-round pick racked up eight total tackles, defended two passes, and grabbed an interception on his day. At 22, with Jaire Alexander banged up, and in a defense that allows cornerbacks to play on an island, Stokes looks like he could be on track for an extremely productive rookie campaign.
Notable Injuries
Romeo Okwara – DE – DETROIT LIONS
Edge rusher Romeo Okwara, who compiled 10 sacks in 2020, will miss the rest of the season after he was diagnosed with a torn Achilles on Monday. It’s a devastating blow for Detroit, as Okwara played in nearly every defensive snap for them in their first three contests of the year. The Lions will look to Austin Bryant to fill Okwara’s vacated snaps.
Patrick Surtain II – CB – DENVER BRONCOS
Rookie cornerback Patrick Surtain II suffered a chest injury in week four against the Ravens. The 21-year-old has been playing well through the first four games of his career and was slated to see 100% of the Broncos’ defensive snaps moving forward. Surtain’s absence would certainly hurt the Broncos’ defense, as Mike Ford may be asked to take up the slack in his absence.
