Dynasty Fantasy Football for Beginners: Pre-Draft Prep

One of my favorite parts of Dynasty Fantasy Football is introducing someone new to it. It’s a more complex game than Redraft. requiring more forward-thinking, with many strategies and approaches to building your team. Your Dynasty startup is crucial to setting your team up for success in a Dynasty league. As we plunge into startup season, I’ll author a series of articles on different concepts, strategies, and tips for the beginner Dynasty manager. I primarily use Sleeper; it’s the easiest app for a league commissioner to utilize and navigate, so I will defer to it for this article. For now, we’ll start at square one.

Best Rookie Landing Spots

Can’t you feel the excitement as we get closer to the draft? With free agency winding down, we now start to see the core of what each of these NFL teams will look like when we get into the fall. There is still one more piece to the puzzle though and if you play dynasty then it is probably amongst your favorite NFL events of the year—the NFL Draft. While I have learned not to take too much from the landing spot, I think many of us are still hurting from Clyde Edwards-Helaire in 2020. It does have an impact though and we would be foolish to ignore it. I find the best practice is to have everyone divided into tiers before the NFL Draft, then move players within a tier instead of jumping them an entire tier based on landing spot. We also have draft capital to consider but that is beyond the scope of what we will be discussing today. Let’s dig in!

@DynastySavant’s 2023 Dynasty Buy-Low WR Candidates

The beauty of Dynasty Football is that the action never ends. Owners are constantly looking to make moves in the offseason, listening to podcasts to gain an edge, ranking and re-ranking their player list, you name it. Being a Dynasty degenerate, I like to pass the time by scrubbing through endless “Power Rankings” lists. While doing so this offseason, I’ve noticed three names that I believe are significantly undervalued. Here are my “buy-low” wide receiver candidates for the 2023 Dynasty season. I recommend putting out some feelers to see what you can get for these players!

The Devy Forecast: Running Backs

With spring practices underway for NCAA college football it felt like the right time to highlight the current landscape of Devy rankings through the lens of my top 5 Devy players at each main skill position: QB, RB, and WR.

If you’re into Devy or just curious about the format this is the article for you! This is the second in a three-part series. The previous piece covered QBs, HERE. This piece covers RBs and the next will highlight my favorite Devy WRs, respectively.

Positional Hot Spots in Pre-Draft Best Ball

At this time of year, the NFL Fantasy Football space is dominated by Dynasty content. Everybody is talking about free agency, The Combine, and NFL Mock Drafts while Redraft season is a million miles away. Don’t get me wrong, I love rookie hype and lopsided trade offers as much as the next guy, but I also love to draft. And I assume you feel the same way; otherwise, you wouldn’t have clicked on this article. In my opinion, the best way to scratch that itch is with pre-draft Best Ball.

Comparing ADP, Dynasty to Redraft: AFC South

A much-overlooked aspect of Dynasty is value comparison, or comparing the values of Dynasty players to Redraft players and seeing which is worth more or less. You might be thinking “well, duh! Of course older players are worth less in Dynasty than Redraft!” to which I agree. But what about Daniel Jones (QB – NYJ), who is only 25 years old? Should he be worth more in Redraft or Dynasty? Or how about Amon-Ra St. Brown (WR – DEN), who in Redraft has an ADP of WR10, but in Dynasty he’s valued as WR6. Which side more appropriately values players? In this series, which will take place over nine parts (one part for each division and a rookie roundup after the draft), I’ll be evaluating every skill position player on every team and giving my thoughts on their value, whether they are overvalued compared to Redraft or undervalued. Usually, the appropriate value will be somewhere in the middle.

Rapid Reaction: Brandin Cooks to Dallas

Narrative irony is one of the more underrated elements of professional sports leagues. In a poetically hilarious move, the Dallas Cowboys recently acquired journeyman receiver Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans. The deal is eerily similar to a move made last offseason by Dallas, in which star receiver Amari Cooper was shipped off in a cap dump trade for an almost identical package of draft picks. Thus, this move is seemingly a downgrade talent-wise, as well as an admittance that moving on from Cooper in 2022 was the wrong decision. So, let’s dive into the NFL and the fantasy implications of this trade.

Rapid Reaction: Elijah Moore to the Cleveland Browns

After an exciting rookie year with the Jets, Elijah Moore was a dynasty darling going into the 2022 season. The drafting of Garrett Wilson was expected to open up the field even more for the talented second-year man out of Ole Miss. Unfortunately for dynasty managers that roster Elijah Moore, the second-year leap was not present. Instead, we were disappointed by a major sophomore slump. His dynasty value took a massive drop off as well as it appeared he was on the outside looking in as far as the Jets offense was concerned. Losing out on slot snaps to the likes of Braxton Berrios. I feared for my Elijah Moore shares if I was going to have to wait for him to get on a second contract just to finally get some return on my investment. On Wednesday, March 22nd, Elijah Moore was traded to the Cleveland Browns with a pick exchange.
