You OTT’a Know

Today, I’m writing up a profile of a little-known Devy prospect who should be much more heralded. Jaydn Ott (RB-Cal) is a big-time junior RB prospect who should get much more love in Devy circles. Below, I’m going to highlight why he should be on your radar.

Jaydn Ott (RB – Cal)

Jaydn Ott ran for 1,305 yards and 12 TDs last year at Cal as a sophomore, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Ott stands at 6’0″ and 200 lbs, giving him the prototypical NFL RB size. Ott has the size/speed combo to take it inside or outside and has great field vision to follow his blocks.

He owns the Cal backfield and should rack up another 1200+ yard rush season in 2024.

In his freshman season, he still averaged a robust 5.3 YPC. I like my college RBs to be over 5.0 YPC, and Ott has done that two seasons in a row while shouldering the load himself in 2023.

Ott also has some receiving upside, which is huge in today’s PPR world. He caught 26 balls last season and 46 as a frosh back in 2022. He has also caught five total TDs over his two-year career with the Golden Bears.

Ott has surprising breakaway speed for someone his size and can take it to the house on any given play. Given his size, he can run it up the gut and catch it out of the backfield when needed. In short, there’s nothing Ott can’t do.

Ott was a four-star prospect in 2022 and played his high school football at Norco High School in Norco, CA. It’s no wonder, then, why the hometown kid decided to continue his college play close to home at Cal.

Dynasty/Devy Value

As an NFL comp, I compare Ott to a Breece Hall-type back, someone who can do it all and take it to the house at any given moment. When I watch Ott’s tape, I don’t see any weaknesses in his game.

Ott is 21 years old but just turned 21 in December, so he should be 22 by the time he’s ready to enter the NFL Draft in 2025. Ott officially announced his return to Cal for the 2024 collegiate season, having no intentions of entering the transfer portal. That makes sense since, as stated earlier, Ott has the Cal backfield all to himself.

You won’t see Ott ranked in anyone’s top 50 Devy ranks (except for mine), but now, having read this article, you’ll know better. Ott should be considered a top back, and with another strong season at Cal, I could see him getting Day 2 draft capital in the actual NFL Draft, making him a top pick in Devy and Dynasty rookie drafts. When you draft Jaydn Ott in Devy drafts, and your league mates ask, “Who?” You can simply tell them, “You Ott’a know!”
