2nd Year Breakout Wide Receivers: Part 1

The consensus used to be that it took wide receivers three years to breakout into fantasy relevance. But, the NFL is turning more pass-happy and players are being utilized in various ways. So, it isn’t out of the question that there are a few second-year breakouts that can boost production for your dynasty team. Similar to last year, if your teams had Courtland Sutton, D.J. Chark, or D.J. Moore on your roster before the start of the season, you more than likely felt comfortable with your team’s outlook. In this 3-part series of articles, I’ll look at six wide receivers that need to be considered.  If you didn’t draft some of these second-year wideouts, it’ll be almost impossible for you to acquire them going forward. Michael Gallup: 2020 Dynasty Profile

Michael Gallup’s  dynasty profile is an interesting story. He was drafted out of Colorado State in the 3rd round of the 2018 NFL Draft. A JUCO transfer from Butler Community college, Gallup played his junior and senior seasons at the FBS Division I level. Here he featured as a key piece of his team’s offense, earning a 97th percentile target share and 74th percentile dominator rating. 

Gallup had a fairly underwhelming NFL rookie season, but in his second year of professional football, Gallup broke out for 1,100 yards and six scores for 66 receptions from 113 targets.

The Bengals drafted Boyd with the 55th overall pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. In his rookie year, Boyd flashed as the number three receiver behind veterans A.J. Green and Brandon LaFell. Boyd played mostly from the slot and complemented the existing pair of outside receivers. While he wasn’t fantasy relevant, he showed enough as a rookie to provide considerable dynasty optimism going into 2017.

Amari Cooper: Not the Top-10 Receiver You Think

Amari Cooper has monopolized his team’s target share over his career. He’s seen at least 20% every season since 2015. This is something just 10 other wide receivers have accomplished. The thing is, of the wide receivers who’ve received at least 20% target share over the last three seasons, Cooper is last in average target share (20.2%). He’s received exactly 20% two of the last three seasons and it didn’t get much better in Dallas (20.7%). Cooper is dangerously close to falling below the 20%+ target share threshold. This is a benchmark almost all top-10 fantasy wide receivers reach in a given season. Brandin Cooks is the only receiver to finish in the top 10 since 2015 with below a 20% target share and he finished with 19.4%.

Terry McLaurin still proves to be the only wide receiver in Washington that you can put in your lineup with any confidence. He lit up the Dolphins for 100 yards and two touchdowns on only 4 receptions (seven targets). The rain put a damper on his game against San Francisco, where Washington was held scoreless. The Vikings are a middle of the road pass defense while the Bills are a top-five, so you may need to temper expectations. The Redskins should be playing from behind in both games, so McLaurin should have value since they will be needing to throw often.
