Josh Downs WR North Carolina NFL Draft Scouting Report

’23 Rookie WR Analytics Spotlight Series: Josh Downs is That Dude

When analyzing wide receiver prospects, analysts such as myself, like to check boxes when a player eclipses a designated threshold for a certain metric. No prospect in this class checked more of these boxes across all metrics than Josh Downs. Downs was an uber-producer during his time at Chapel Hill. When Sam Howell or Drake Maye needed a big play, Downs was the unquestioned target. In this article, I will take you through the numbers and display why you should be targeting Josh Downs in your dynasty rookie drafts.

JC Johnson’s Undeclared Gems: Jordan Addison

In a new era of the NIL, Jordan Addison is the first player that truly made his decision essentially a free agency tour. He visited multiple schools including USC, Texas, and Alabama, spoke to coaches, spoke to players on the team, and figured out who could provide the most for him both on and off the field. Now the all-important question: what does this mean for Jordan Addison’s devy value going forward?

Devy Players of the Week

Grayson McCall’s stats are slightly padded by Coastal Carolina’s offensive scheme, which I believe would be fair to call a “Spread Triple Option” attack. Their offense utilizes the triple-option rushing attack, but out of the shotgun and receivers spread out wide, opposed to the under-center triple option we typically see from Army and Navy. The Coastal Carolina offense also utilizes a lot of Run-Pass-Options. This scheme forces the defense to respect the run and allows the QB to make easy reads. So you should consider this when evaluating McCall’s stats, but you cannot undervalue his arm talent and athleticism. In 2020 McCall used his legs often and was efficient doing so, running for 569 yards and seven touchdowns. In 2021 he has not run nearly as often, rushing for just 188 yards and three touchdowns through nine games. He has been more effective as a passer though, as I previously mentioned, he leads the country in Passing Efficiency Rating and Passing Yards Per Attempt.

Devy Players of the Week

After receiving limited playing time at Ohio State in 2019, and 2020, Jameson Williams transferred to Alabama. The decision to transfer looks to be the right decision, as Williams is leading the SEC in receiving yards with 1,028 and receiving touchdowns with ten. This past weekend against New Mexico State, Williams had a career-high three-touchdown game, catching six passes for 158 yards. Through ten games this season, Williams has a dominator rating of 30.6%, which should qualify this year as a “breakout” for him. Listed at 6’2” 189 pounds, Jameson will be tagged as skinny for the BMI truthers in the fantasy football community. His production in the SEC cannot be ignored, even if it is Junior season. Alabama’s track record for producing first-round draft picks could continue with Jameson Williams.

Devy Players of the Week

Jahan Dotson is dominating in 2021, continuing his success from last season. In nine games last year, Dotson had 884 yards and eight touchdowns, and now through nine games in 2021 Dotson has 932 yards and nine touchdowns. Although his success is later in his college career, his dominance cannot be ignored. His production and strong film has not gone unnoticed. NFL Draft expert and analyst Mel Kiper is very high on the Nittany Lions’ WR. As of September 30th, Kiper had Dotson as the No. 8 player overall and WR1 on his 2022 NFL Draft Big Board.

Devy Players of the Week

This redshirt junior QB stands at 6’4” 215 lbs., and he is having a great season so far. Nationally Carson Strong is fifth in passing yardage, with 2,883, and is sixth in passing touchdowns, with 24. Through eight games in 2021, Carson has already surpassed this passing total of 2,858 last year and is only three touchdowns behind his 27 from last season. After his impressive sophomore season, Strong had some hype going into this season, and he has lived up to it so far. As things stand now, I believe he is firmly in the discussion for top-five QB in the 2022 class.

Devy Players of the Week

Romeo Doubs is a senior wide receiver for the Nevada Wolf Pack. He stands 6’2 and 200 lbs. which if validated at the NFL Combine represents a receiver that can play the slot or on the outside. Doubs will not test off the charts athletically at the NFL Combine, but he is likely to hit all of the athletically-based thresholds we like to see. Although coming out of Nevada is not ideal for a prospect, the Mountain West has brought up incredible players like Marshall Faulk, Nate Burleson, Keenan McCardell, Doug Martin, and most recently Davante Adams.

Devy Breakouts: October 2021

Xavier Worthy is a 6’1” and 160 lbs. burner who was the eighth-rated wide receiver in the 2021 class, and a top-75 player overall. Worthy was originally committed to Michigan, but when Steve Sarkisian accepted the Texas head coaching job he flipped Worthy, who he recruited hard during his time at Alabama. By flipping Worthy’s commitment, Sarkisian made it a point to get instant production from his first hand-picked prospect.

Jadon Haselwood Logs Hat Trick Against TCU

Sophomore wide receiver Jadon Haselwood shined on Saturday night in Norman as Oklahoma outlasted TCU in a 52-31 shootout. Compiling a team-high six receptions for 56 yards and three touchdowns, Haselwood was involved early and often in Oklahoma’s revitalized offense. Haselwood looked much like the receiver Sooners fans envisioned him becoming and will look to build on this performance as the team enters the home stretch of the regular season.

Devy Players of the Week

Matt Corral is making his case for the best draft-eligible QB this year. Spencer Rattler has played poorly, and Sam Howell isn’t having the same success as years past, leaving the top QB spot in 2022 pretty much wide open. Corral could hear his name called early on April 28, and his value as a Devy and Dynasty asset could soar. We have Matt Corral ranked as the Devy QB7 and the QB3 in the 2022 class, but I see that changing soon. After Corral’s big game on a national stage, it will likely be hard to acquire him via trade unless you are willing to pay up big time. For this reason, I see Corral as a “hold” because I believe his value can only rise from here.

Sam Howell-UNC

Devy Players of the Week

After a disappointing individual performance in a Week 1 loss to Virginia Tech, the Junior 6’1″ 220 lbs. QB bounced back in a big way against the clearly outmatched Georgia State Panthers. In Week 2 Howell completed 72.4% of his passes for 353 yards and three touchdowns and zero interceptions, a stark improvement from his 53.1% completion percentage and one touchdown with three interceptions. However, what got Sam Howell on the list today was he rushing in Week 2. Howell gashed Georgia State for 104 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

The Next D.K. Metcalf is in College and He’s Free…For Now

There is a player from the 2020 class who compares favorably to Metcalf and is on pace to outproduce Metcalf’s college statistics considerably. This prospect is on the same trajectory as Metcalf was in his early college days and could even surpass Metcalf when it comes to his upside. This prospect ran a 4.52-second 40-yard dash at his high school combine, at the same weight that Metcalf ran a 4.68. Metcalf gained over 20 lbs. in college and his agility was impacted. His 4.3-second high school short shuttle decreased to 4.5-seconds at the NFL Combine. His three-cone drill also dropped from 6.8-seconds to 7.38-seconds at the NFL Combine.

Garrett Wilson: 2021 Devy Profile

In his true freshman season, Wilson caught 26 passes for 385 yards and five TDs. Within the context of the Ohio State offense, he accounted for 11.4% of their receiving yardage and 10.6% of their receiving scoring. This equates to an 11.0% dominator rating and an 11.3% adjusted dominator rating. Wilson also averaged 1.07 yards per team pass attempt. While these figures do not surpass the 25% dominator rating threshold for a true breakout.

Chris Olave: 2021 Devy Profile

In his true freshman season, Olave caught 12 passes for 197 yards and three TDs. Within the context of the Ohio State offense, he accounted for 3.9% of their receiving yardage and 6% of their receiving scoring. This equates to a 5% dominator rating and a 4.3% adjusted dominator rating. Olave also averaged 0.36 yards per team pass attempt. While these figures do not surpass the 25% dominator rating threshold for a true breakout. His yards per catch average was 17.6, where above 16 is a statistically significant indicator for an NFL player’s deep-threat ability. The 2018 Ohio State team also had Terry McLaurin, Parris Campbell, K.J. Hill, and J.K. Dobbins, all current NFL players, with who Olave was competing for targets.

February DFF Devy Mock Draft: Round 1

We composed a four-person mock draft at DFF to start collecting devy rank data. For some people, a devy-only draft will be coming up soon, while for others the only draft of the season will be a blended rookie and devy draft after the NFL Draft takes place. We will go over how to value devy players versus rookie players later in this offseason, but for now, let’s dive into the devy debates.
