Jaydon Blue was a three-year player and early declare out of Texas, posting his best season in 2024. As a true junior, Blue finished with just under 1,100 scrimmage yards and 14 total touchdowns on the season, playing in a committee backfield alongside former teammate Quintrevion Wisner.

Over Blue’s three seasons for the Longhorns, he competed for touches with some elite RB talent, which is why his counting stats appear pretty modest. As a true freshman in 2022, Blue was stuck behind Bijan Robinson, Roschon Johnson, and Jonathon Brooks. In 2023, Brooks led the way, with true freshman and five-star recruit CJ Baxter not far behind. Blue found himself the odd man out.

This past season, it appeared Blue would have the backfield to himself after Baxter suffered an LCL and ACL injury in practice. That never came to fruition, however, as Wisner finished with 226 rush attempts to Blue’s 135. Blue was most effective on passing downs, finishing with 58 targets, 41 receptions, 365 yards, and six touchdowns. He had the versatility to line up in the slot or out wide and ran some complex routes to all three levels of the field.

Blue’s Achilles’ heel in college was ball security, fumbling the football seven times on just 215 career attempts, for a fumble rate of 3.25%. This is a major red flag that could keep Blue from seeing any rushing work on Sundays.

FILM

Blue is a smaller back who struggles in between the tackles, but if you get him out in space, the defense is in trouble. He lacks the vision, patience, size, and strength to ever carry a three-down workload in the NFL, but his route-running ability and receiving upside could make him a nice third-down back, providing some PPR value. Blue is an agile athlete with a quick first step and has the burst to beat defenders to the corner and break it upfield. He has homerun play ability and projects to be more of that “change of pace” back at the next level. With only 215 career carries, there are a lot of question marks surrounding Blue’s overall game, and experience could be a legitimate concern.

The one concern I have with Blue on the receiving end is that, due to his size, he has a pretty small catch radius. He needs an accurate pass to have a shot at hauling it in.

ATHLETIC TESTING

blue

Jaydon Blue posted a respectable 6.34 RAS, posting impressive marks in the broad jump, 40-yard dash, and 20-yard split. At 5’9” and sub-200 pounds, Blue will be one of the smaller backs in the NFL, but we’ve seen NFL teams implement these smaller, explosive backs into their game plans more often in recent years. Blue is an above-average athlete who can take it to the house on any given play.

DRAFT ANALYSIS

nfl

Rapid Reaction to Draft Capital: Below Average

Rapid Reaction to Landing Spot: Excellent

Jaydon Blue was selected 149th overall in the NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys.

We all know Day 3 running backs have a historically low hit rate, but at least Blue is headed to a backfield where he could earn himself a serious workload. Dallas let Rico Dowdle walk in free agency and elected to sign Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders to small one-year deals. They also drafted Phil Mafah in the seventh round, a larger back who projects to be a two-down grinder if given a shot. This RB depth chart is easily one of the weakest in the NFL, so if there was a spot where Blue could become fantasy-relevant, it’s Dallas.

FANTASY INSIGHTS

I currently have Blue as my 39th overall prospect in Dynasty Superflex Rookie drafts, and my rookie RB13 overall. He’s unlikely to ever earn 200+ rush attempts in a season, but if he can earn a third-down role with some early-down work sprinkled in, he may be flex-worthy down the road in PPR formats. I could see Blue earning 60-70 targets a year in a ceiling scenario, and being similar to a Darren Sproles on offense.

I would target Blue in the early-fourth round of your Superflex Rookie drafts. The floor here is zero, but the receiving upside and playmaking ability make him an interesting late-round target.
