This week’s interview is with a super talented and versatile linebacker Royce See of Sam Houston State. The senior linebacker was gracious enough to give us a few minutes and discuss his football career, beginning from his Pee Wee days through his college career. Let’s dive right into the interview.

Who introduced you to the game of football?
I was introduced to the game by my father and my cousin at a very young age. About the same time, I learned to walk, I was already playing with a football.
Why did you choose Sam Houston State Bearkats to further your football career?
From the time I took my first visit to Sam Houston State, it felt like home. Being in that environment and be able to come to a top FCS program to compete for championships was something I wanted to be a part of.

What’s the one thing you need to improve most about your game?
I would say my pad level when shedding blocks against offensive linemen is something I’m focusing on. A few times, I would get high when creating separation from blocks, but as I learned to use angles and leverage to my advantage, I started to see good results.
What is the strongest part of your game?
I would say my versatility and physicality. Throughout my career, I have had success in multiple schemes at multiple positions, as well as on special teams. Being able to play at a variety of spots on the field allows me to help the team in many ways. Playing physical is something I take pride in every time I touch the field. The faster and the more physical you play will create more chances to get around the ball and make plays to make an impact on your team. Also, my leadership. I’m the guy that is going to set the tempo and set the tone for the guys around me.
Film study is such an important part of football, what are some key things you look for when watching tape?
Watching film is the first step in becoming a great player. Some things that I focus on are the breakdowns of top formations as well as top plays. Understanding the tendencies of your opponent gives you a better understanding of how they will try to attack you in certain situations. Watching an opponent is like reading a book, the more you watch, the better understanding you get of what they try to do. Being able to key in on the differences of alignment of certain positions pre-snap allows you to diagnose plays faster when the ball is snapped, such as RB width, OL splits, or TE depth.
What’s your favorite song of all-time?
Over by Drake
What would you do career-wise if you didn’t play football?
If I did not play football, I would love to have a career on the business side of the game, whether that be in marketing or management. Currently, I am finishing up my sports management masters program, which prepares me with many different options for life after football. Coaching has always been an option for me as well and will definitely be something I will also take into consideration.
What one game would you recommend someone watch of your play?
This year against SFA when I received the national player of the week.
What one game would you like to replay, and why?
This year’s game against Northwestern State. We had plenty of chances to win the game, but we ended up losing and ultimately kept us out of the playoffs.
Do you play fantasy football?
No, I do not personally, but I do like to keep up with week to week performances.

What NFL linebacker do you pattern your game after?
Bobby Wagner, Jaylon smith, Deion Jones, just to name a few. Also, Jamal Adams, each of these guys are not only great players but great leaders as well. The passion and dedication that they bring day in and day out is something I respect.
What is the one famous dead person you could talk to for a day and why?
Martin Luther King. Just to understand the vision he had for our nation.
What’s your favorite defensive play call & why?
Any 5 or 6 man pressure. I believe it creates one on one matchups across the field, allowing more opportunities to make plays. Football is about beating the man across from you every play. It also gives you the opportunity to counter with both man and zone pressures, which confuse offenses creating takeaways.
Now that the season is finished, what are your next steps and goals?
Right now, I am focused on becoming the best athlete I can be and reach my highest potential for combine/pro day in order to raise my draft grade and stock. I want to show teams that no matter the position, I can be an asset and make an impact on someone’s Roster. With saying that, the ultimate short-term goal I have for myself is to make a 53 man roster my rookie year.
What are your plans for training and getting ready for the combine?
I am training in Houston at Armed Sports Performance with one of the best trainers in the nation Derrick Blaylock.
Do you have any other all-star games you scheduled to play in? When & where?
I recently attended the FCS Bowl and the College Gridiron Showcase.
As you begin to prepare for the next step in your career, what has been the best piece of advice that you have received?
You are your own brand, and you have your own message.
If you could choose the NFL team that you wanted to play for, who would it be and why?
It would be a blessing to play on any of the 32 teams in the league, but I actually do not have a favorite team, so I’m not bias to any.. I want to be a part of an organization that has championship core values aimed to reach a common goal and will allow me to display my talents on and off the field, make an impact on the people around me, and to grow and develop as an athlete and a professional.
If you could visit any place in the world, where would it be and why?
Indianapolis, Indiana. I would love to have the opportunity to go there for the combine and NFL draft.
Do you play video games? Which Platform?
I have an Xbox One, but I can’t say I play that much. If I do, though, I like to play madden or COD. Other than that, I use it for Netflix or ESPN.
If you had to tell an inspiring HS player on what the hardest part of playing college ball is, what would it be and why?
Consistency. Learn how to be consistent not only in your performance but in your approach to everything you do. Workouts, film study, leadership, or in a class all should be done to your best ability day in and day out in order to be great.
If you had to give any pointers, what would they be?
Everyone was created with a purpose in life, but it is up to you to find out what you are most passionate about and strive to be the best at it.
