DynastyPatrolHQ’s Devy Freshmen: WR Landscape

Today, I’m going to be taking a look at the incoming freshman class of WRs, going over my top four. This is the second in a three-part series; last time, I addressed my top four freshman QBs, and next will be my top four freshman RBs.

Jeremiah Smith (WR-OSU)

Smith is not only the best WR of this freshman class, but he’s also rated as the best overall prospect at any position, which is unheard of. At 6’3″ and 214 lbs, Smith already has the size of a prototypical alpha in the league. He should be a day-one starter for OSU alongside Emeka Egbuka and Carnell Tate. Smith is a contested catch-ball hawk with a rare size/speed combination. Essentially, he’ll beat you all over the field. Also, when scouting freshmen, landing spots and situations are incredibly important. Hard to argue with a guy that committed to WRU that is OSU.

Cam Coleman copy 1

Cam Coleman (WR-Auburn)

Coleman is a bit undersized at 6’3″ and 180 lbs, but we’ve seen WRs with a similar thin build succeed in the NCAA, like Xavier Worthy of Texas. He’s a speedster with height and also played high school basketball. Auburn is a good landing spot, as Coleman should be able to suit up right away on Saturdays. Expect Coleman to add a few pounds to his frame to become a consistent outside threat. I expect Coleman to dominate right away with his athleticism and make whoever is throwing the ball at Auburn look good.

Ryan Williams (WR-Alabama)

Williams is undersized at 6’0″ and 165 lbs, but he’ll have a chance to add some muscle come game days. Another Alabama wide receiver with a similar frame who has had a lot of success in college and the NFL so far is DeVonta Smith. Like Jeremiah Smith, Williams went to a great WR factory in Alabama that produces pro WRs like no other. With Isaiah Bond transferring out, Williams may get to play right away and establish a rapport with entrenched starting QB Jalen Milroe. Williams has blazing speed, as he played track and field in high school. Look for him to line up in the slot and be a consistent downfield burner for Alabama.

ryan wingo

Ryan Wingo (WR-Texas)

Standing at a little over 6’1″ and 210 lbs, Wingo already possesses the prototypical build of a starting WR in the league. I love the landing spot of Texas, as he’ll be able to sit, learn, and grow with Arch Manning. Both won’t start this season but should set the NCAA world ablaze come 2025. Wingo is the only WR on this list who may not see immediate playing time, but for devy drafters who invest in his services, he’ll be worth the wait. He also ran track in high school, can run the full route tree, and possesses good hands, which should translate over to the next level.
