Wow!! Week 5 was really wild. There were so many big scores. I had several teams put up over 200 points in redraft. One of them put up a 217 and lost! I think that is a new personal record for a losing effort. I also put up 194 and lost, 188 and lost. I also won with 117. Fantasy football is fickle. Week 5 really seemed to be an act of the fantasy gods beating down any and all victory lappers. A true swing of variance coming to fruition. I hit my ceiling in week 5 across my portfolio, and it was glorious.
In last week’s article, I referred to 10 of my redraft squads as “done”. Actually, I put the word “dead” in my spreadsheet. There were a couple of dynasty squads that I also downgraded as dead. I dug a hole for them, threw them in, and covered them with dirt. Digitally, as it were.
But then wait, what’s this? Week 5 with a vengeance!!
Could it be? After the MNF explosion by my Lamar Jackson and Mark Andrews stacks, to go along with Michael Pittman Jr. (one of my highest share WRs in redraft and dynasty) and so many others that did great for me this weekend, there are indeed signs of life after death. Bwaaaahaaahaaaa!!!
Not so fast. Anything is possible in Double Jeopardy, but one great week does not make a championship season. Nor is it quite enough to bring these corpse teams back to life just yet. I will probably have to sacrifice another team or two to complete the ritual. But there are rumblings now. There are two teams that I buried and held a funeral for that I have now upgraded to “zombie” status. I must have had some prescience when I named them back in May and August, respectively, because they are “Tails From The Crypto” and “Nails of Justice”. They are coming. And they want ships.
RESULTS
FFPC 1QB Dynasty Legacy Teams: Both of my startups from this season got wins and had big weeks. They are “zombies”. My one other legacy squad is crushing fools like this:
Sidenote I might do Thor for Halloween. The fat drunk one, obviously.
FFPC SuperFlex Dynasty Legacy Teams: See Thor (the sober chiseled one that commands lightning), also Led Zeppelin. Otherwise, I have one startup from this year that is snakebit but stacked for years to come. There is still a chance for it to join the undead before Halloween, which is on a Sunday this year, folks.
One of my best SF teams is from a startup from last year where I waited on QB, a strategy I endorse. Now I have Josh Allen and Aaron Rodgers and am #1 in points scored through five weeks. I had the top score in 3/5 weeks. 4-1 H2H, yet I am second in my division and sitting in the #4 seed. Fickle hobby.
FFPC 1QB Dynasty Orphan Project Teams: The three rebuilds are still dead. This won’t be changing. The other four all took steps forward with big scores and victories this week. One is in first place in its division competing for a bye, and the other three are now within two VPs of the playoffs.
FFPC SuperFlex Dynasty Orphan Project Teams: I went 15-4 across my SuperFlex (SF) dynasty teams, and many of my discounted project teams that I hoped to turn into competitors are right there on the verge within a couple of Victory Points (VP), or in a playoff spot already. Other project teams are dominating. I have 13 teams in this SF project orphan category. I buried two of them last week and that makes four dead now. The other nine are heroes absolutely slaying out there right now.
FFPC Redraft Tourneys: Week 6 is the All-Play week in the new FootballguysPlayers Championship (FBG) format. We used to have an 11-week regular season but it has been changed to 12 weeks this year to accommodate the NFL’s new 18-week season. This means that each owner plays each other once, but then there is one week where there are no Head-to-Head matchups (H2H) and instead, a victory is awarded to the top-six scoring teams in each league that week. That week is Week 6. I guess I have to consider this a good thing as most of my teams are easily in the top half of scoring in their leagues. Even the dead ones that are really dead.
I made a ton of hay last week with such huge ceiling games. If I am to complete the ritual, I need more weeks like this. With byes being upon us now, it is going to get even more difficult.

RECENT TRADES
Mine: Nothing to report here. I need to shop some players around. I’ve had some negotiations and people have sent low-ball offers, as per usual. There is nothing that says I have to make a trade.
Theirs: One of the bigger trades I’ve seen went down an hour before the main Sunday kickoff slate. These two trades are from separate leagues, but both are SF.
FF GAMESMANSHIP
In a previous article, I wrote about Victory Points and found that 27 is the magic number to make the playoffs. 33 is the average number of VPs earned by a playoff team but 27 seems to be the threshold to get there. That was calculated based on a typical 13-week fantasy season, but now there are 14 weeks. That puts the magic number just a fraction above 29. There is still a lot of the season left to get there for teams that are on the verge. My front-running teams are well on their way and the ones that are bringing up the back may or may not rise from the ashes by the time we get past Halloween, but the 2nd quarter heater is definitely on!
