Welcome back to Dynasty Sleeper of the Week! As mentioned in previous weeks, this is not a waiver article. This is more of a player that should be on your radar article. Last week we hit the running back position. This week I am hitting a tight end I believe can be added today that you can plug and play over some TEs you are holding on to in your leagues. That player is Jordan Akins of the Houston Texans. According to ESPN, he is owned in 3.8% of leagues at the moment on My Fantasy League it jumps to 42%, however, I still do not believe that this is enough for a TE that has shown some flashes the past few weeks. If you can grab Jordan today, do it.
2020 Season and Future Outlook
Jordan Akins has already scored a touchdown this season. After two weeks, he was 14th in fantasy points at his position, and he also had the 9th best snap share running the 6th most routes at his position. Akins is on a Texans team desperately looking for a way to replace (or at least manufacture a way to make up for) the loss, via trade, of DeAndre Hopkins. In Week 2, Akins received 7 targets and caught them all. He continues to develop his game and his rapport with Deshaun Watson, which is indeed getting stronger.Â
Akins was asked, via a Houston Texans postgame press conference, about the potential for a breakout season and he said, “Every year I view it as a breakout season. Every year it seems like I get a little more trust within the staff and Deshaun (Watson). I’m looking to make that big play, looking to make that big block. When the opportunity presents itself, I’m trying to capitalize in each and every way.” Akins is making his move in this offense. This offense continues to grow and mold into what it will be over the remainder of this season and next Akins looks like a potential bargain for Dynasty owners. Akins is signed through 2021 however he is not looking for greener grass anywhere else when asked about his future as a Houston Texan he responded with “I love Houston. I love the city. I love the staff. I love playing here. I do see myself playing here long-term. Hopefully, one day I will be able to.”
In the preseason, Akins was not on the fantasy radar, as some considered Darren Fells the starter in Houston. However, that is simply not the case, and with the injury history of Brandin Cooks and Will Fuller, this team needs all the weapons it can get. Akins fits the bill as someone that can take a step forward for this team. As fantasy football players, we can look to take advantage of Jordan Akins’s future.Â
After a 2 catch 28 yard performance, Atkins should still be widely available. Despite the weak performance, he still is the tight end you want in an offense that is still emerging. Akins is worth considering rostering going into a nice matchup against the Vikings. After Week 4, Akins could be highly sought after as he has the chance to become a nice option for Watson going forward.
