Welcome back to this week’s installment. As mentioned in previous renditions, this is not a waiver article, but more of a player that should be on your radar article. In the last couple of weeks, we have targeted the wide receiver position as I searched far and wide for a player at the running back position for everyone to keep an eye on or grab as a speculative add. Gus Edwards is not a sexy name. He is probably someone that you have dabbled with in dynasty, let go, and forgot about. That being said, Gus is still in the Ravens plans always just one play away from an even bigger share of work in an excellent offense.
Gus Edwards has been a productive player for this Ravens offense since joining the team as an undrafted free agent. Edwards has averaged 5.3 YPC and has also seen a decent share of red-zone work over the last two seasons. He signed his exclusive rights tender back in July of this year. The Ravens also added Ohio State star running back J.K. Dobbins in the 2020 NFL Draft. The addition of Dobbins has scared many potential owners, and many grabbed Dobbins and dismissed Edwards. Edwards, at 6’1 and 238 lbs, has shown good burst and the ability to run hard in between the tackles. He is very much the epitome of what the Ravens are on offense as currently constructed.
2020 Season and Future Outlook
We are only two games into the 2020 campaign and so far what we have seen is much of the same. The workloads for the running backs in this offense are truly a committee. That being said, in Week 2 Edwards led the team in carries, outside of Lamar Jackson. Sure, that is not going to happen every week, but Edwards is a player you can stick in your lineup in deeper leagues when he has plus matchups. He finished Week 2 with 73 yards rushing.
Finding suitable running backs with so many injuries already is hard to do at this point in the fantasy season. Many are grabbing Mike Davis, Dion Lewis, and Devonta Freeman, and rightly so. Gus will be there. He is currently owned in just 30% of leagues and if you would like to grab a running back that is just one injury away from a much larger role on an ultra-productive rush offense — Gus is a great speculative add.
After this season Gus will be a Restricted Free Agent and the Ravens will have an opportunity to keep him. With the emergence of J.K. Dobbins coupled with Mark Ingram‘s potential contract-out in 2021, we could see the Ravens let Ingram go and keep Edwards. They could have Dobbins, Edwards, and Hill all at a reasonable cost. Gus Edwards, especially in deeper leagues, is someone you should consider adding. Running backs are hot commodities right now, and he has some value as an RB you can play when you are in a pinch, and possibly flip for more value if injuries occur in the future.
