An Introduction
There is a lot of uncertainty coming into the 2020 season. In this weekly series, I will bring you one player that you can put on your radar as a potential pickup throughout the season. These will be speculative adds and are all dependent on your current roster structure. Most of these players will be off the beaten path so that you have a better chance of acquiring them.
The Player
For Week 1, we will start with a player that has had very little news about him in the last few weeks. He is a Patriot and part of a much-maligned receiving core. We are searching for some value in the margins, and this Patriot offense is as much up in the air as anything at this point. Who Cam Newton targets after Julian Edelman and N’Keal Harry is a giant question mark.
Jakobi Meyers is someone you can get today. According to MFL Dynasty’s most owned players, he is currently at a 22% ownership rate. I get it. I could have gone with Damiere Byrd or camp star Gunner Olszewski, but I instead went with a player who turned heads last year, as a rookie, and showed flashes with 26 receptions for 359 yards. Meyers will not wow you as an athlete. What he will do is bring a legitimate understanding of the playbook and sure hands to an offense desperately looking for production. Edelman is coming off two offseason surgeries, and N’keal Harry hasn’t risen to his potential yet. This opens the door for someone else to step up on this team at the wide receiver position.
2020 Opportunity
Grabbing Jakobi Meyers, who was on the active roster every game and played over 50% of snaps in 7 games last year, gives you upside on an offense that should be better with Cam Newton under center. Meyers, a former QB, understands leverage and coverages better than most and has a knack for getting open. The Patriots cutting Muhammed Sanu opens up a battle for the 3rd wideout on this team. As we all know, Bill Belichick doesn’t mess around if guys are not doing what he asks. If N’Keal Harry starts slow or Edelman is brought along slowly due to injuries, it could open the door for a guy like Meyers, a blue-collar, hard-working player that seemingly finds the right spots.
