Dezmon Patmon to Indianapolis Colts: NFL Draft

The Indianapolis Colts selected Dezmon Patmon, Wide Receiver, out of Washington State University. He was the 33rd pick of the sixth round and was the 32nd wide receiver drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Biography

Dezmon Patmon is 6’4” and 225 pounds. He played four years at Washington State and will be 22 years old at the beginning of the 2020 NFL season. Patmon suffered a knee injury that ended his freshman season and knocked him down the depth chart going into his sophomore season. A solid role player, Patmon never became the full-time starter and only started 12 games in college.

College Production

Dezmon Patmon’s production never met the criteria for a breakout age (age during their first season with a 20% receiving dominator rating) during his time playing for the Cougars. During Patmon’s best season from a market-share standpoint was his junior season at 20 years old. Patmon had 61 catches, for 816 receiving yards, and five scrimmage touchdowns for a receiving dominator rating (average percentage of their team’s receiving yards and receiving touchdowns) of 14.8% (8th percentile). Patmon had insufficient age-adjusted production. He averaged 494.0 scrimmage yards (31st percentile) and 3.3 scrimmage touchdowns (25th percentile) per season for an average scrimmage dominator rating (average percentage of their team’s scrimmage yards and scrimmage touchdowns) per season of 6.7% (25th percentile). Patmon wasn’t efficient either and averaged 0.52 scrimmage yards per team play (25th percentile).

NFL Landing Spot

Indianapolis Colts: Definitely a winner in the 2020 offseason. Bringing in Philip Rivers and his career 95.1 passer rating should be what this team needs to take the next step. Rivers 2019 was awful, but it was also in a year where the entire Chargers took a major step back. Worth noting is that in 2018 Rivers carried a 105.5 passer rating and targeted all parts of the field well. In 2019, the Colts ended as the 17th ranked offense. They threw with the fifth least frequency, clearly hampered by Jacoby Brissett’s uninspired play and injuries to key role players. This roster boasts a pair of gifted wide receivers in T.Y Hilton and 2019 second round pick, Parris Campbell. 2018 UDFA Zach Pascal was a surprise in relief of Hilton and Campbell last season, who combined to miss 15 games, leading the team with 72 targets. The depth chart behind those three is practically nonexistent. Rivers should succeed with this group based on his success targeting the intermediate part of the field where a majority of their routes were run. However, T.Y. Hilton hasn’t played a full season in two years, is 30 years old and will be a free agent after the season. Campbell certainly commanded a lot of draft stock, but the injury plagued freshman campaign makes him not only an unknown, but also a risky bet to rely on as a possible WR1 option past the 2020 season. There is a lot of wiggle room for a wide receiver to come in and thrive with the Colts given the injury prone nature of their stars.

***Editor’s Note*** The Indianapolis Colts selected Michael Pittman Jr. in the second round of the draft.

Rivals’ Rapid Analysis

Dezmon Patmon had solid raw stats in college but when put in the context of Washington State’s high volume passing attack Patmon underwhelmed from a production standpoint. Patmon’s size and speed combination will be interesting to watch because he will need to use it and his physicality to win at the next level. The Indianapolis Colts invested late-sixth round draft capital into Patmon. He has a relatively promising opportunity for a depth receiver and will compete with TY Hilton, Michael Pittman, Parris Campbell, and Jack Doyle for targets from Philip Rivers

Dezmon Patmon is not on Shawn’s radar. He ranked low based on his lack of encouraging collegiate production. While some of his measurables are tantalizing, he is going to a team that has already drafted a receiver much higher and also added a premier running back who can catch the ball. Add Patmon to your watch list, not your roster.

Dezmon Patmon falls out of Dave’s top 25 rookie wide receiver rankings and is not a target in rookie drafts. Patmon has a tantalizing combination of size and speed that could draw the attention of fantasy players. His athleticism combined with his raw counting stats could also pique the interest of many fantasy managers. However, from a market share standpoint, Patmon does not have an appealing production profile. Conversely, the Colts are a fairly soft landing spot for Patmon. The production and low draft capital make other players more appealing than Patmon at the end of rookie drafts.
