Preseason Overreactions: Week 2

We witnessed history this preseason—the end of an era. The Ravens preseason dynasty is finally over, brought to an end by the Washington Commanders in the greatest preseason game of all time. I’m sure I’m not being hyperbolic by saying this at all.

Dynasty What If? Amon-Ra St. Brown

Hello and welcome to another edition of “Dynasty What If?” In this series, @ChrisMiles1017 and I explore expectations for different players in the upcoming 2023 NFL season. These will include a projected ceiling outcome and a potential floor outcome. After that, we will discuss what we think is most likely. The idea is to lay out and consider what is possible and compare that to what is probable. In addition, we will relay potential effects for every scenario on the player’s dynasty value. Now, let’s dive into our next subject: Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Preseason Overreactions: Week 1 Edition

Another week of preseason means another week of preseason overreactions. Twitter was full of highlights and discussions about who ran with which group during the games and who had the night off. Amongst all this, we must figure out what is an overreaction and what is real. We could go through many more players than the ones here. However, in the interest of not writing a book, I have cut down to the 12 I found most interesting to talk about. If I don’t get to your boy specifically, I do apologize. I am also not getting to talk about Nathan Rourke potentially having the play of the year while we are still in preseason. Without further ado, let’s break down these overreactions from the weekend.

Training Camp Buzz 3.0

Are you ready for some football? It is training camp season, and I couldn’t be more excited. It’s time to see how the rookies we have spent all off-season analyzing stack up to the next level of competition. It’s time to see who wins training camp battles. Hopefully, it’s not time to see an abundance of injury-related news.

PB&J, Burgers & Fries, and Wings & Beer. Arguably some of the better pairings we’ve come to know and love, but there is another beautiful pairing that only comes around once a year; August & Fantasy Football. Redraft season is heating up, “rankings week” has many feeling like they’re at an adult summer camp with no children, and a lot of dynasty leagues that have been quiet since the NFL draft, have begun to stir.

DFF Sleepers: Buy-Low Dynasty Players

Welcome back, DFF Army! NFL Football is just around the corner, and our amazing content team decided to put together our collective “DFF Sleepers” for our members! For this article, we are defining a sleeper as a player with a 12th-round Dynasty startup ADP or later per Bulletproof ADP.

Late-Round Dynasty Start-Up Gems

An underrated aspect of Dynasty fantasy football is finding hidden gems. These players can blossom into lineup mainstays or be traded for plus value later. Late rounds are where savvy owners can unearth these valuable assets. Identifying late-round dynasty gems requires research, foresight, and a keen eye for potential. Here are a few things I focus on when looking for these deep treasures.

Comparing ADP, Dynasty to Redraft: NFC East

A much-overlooked aspect of Dynasty is value comparison, or comparing the values of Dynasty players to Redraft players and seeing which is worth more or less. You might be thinking, “Well, duh! Of course, older players are worth less in Dynasty than Redraft!” I agree! But what about Daniel Jones (QB – NYJ), who is only 26 years old? Should he be worth more in Redraft or Dynasty? Or how about Amon-Ra St. Brown (WR – DEN), who in Redraft has an ADP of WR10, but in Dynasty, he’s valued as WR6. Which side more appropriately values players? In this series, which will take place over eight parts (one part for each division), I’ll evaluate every skill position player on every team and give my thoughts on their value, whether they are overvalued compared to Redraft or undervalued. Usually, the appropriate value will be somewhere in the middle.

Preseason Overreactions: Hall of Fame Game Edition

Thursday Night marked a noteworthy night on the calendar for NFL fans across the globe—the first NFL preseason game. It was the first chance to throw in some DFS lineups, the first chance to lose money on the Jets (-1.5) when a missed pass interference call could have saved you (I’m still bitter), and for our purposes, the first chance to see some of these rookies in action. Every preseason we are so excited about anything new that it is easy to overreact. I can still remember last year with everyone concerned over Josh Jacobs playing so many snaps in the Hall of Fame game. Don’t worry about it though, because we here at DFF are here to help you sort out what is an overreaction and what is the actual takeaway.

Buy or Sell? Dynasty Edition

Finding value within the dynasty landscape can sometimes feel like a daunting task. With all the takes, stats, and data points we have access to now via X (Twitter), it can feel like paralysis by analysis at times. Whether it’s trade calculators, different sets of rankings, or some of your favorite fantasy analysts having completely opposing viewpoints on the same player, defining value can be one of the more difficult avenues a dynasty player has to traverse. Specifically, the art of buying and selling and how to go about it. For the sake of this discussion, I wanted to share a couple of dynasty trades I recently made and discuss the value thought process. In addition, I identified three different options/scenarios involving dynasty running backs that could be buys/sells depending on where your team is in its current lifecycle/league landscape.

Dynasty What If? Jahmyr Gibbs

Hello and welcome to a new ‘Dynasty What If?’ series. In this series, @paul_dff and I will review two possible expectations for different players for the 2023 NFL season. These will include a projected ceiling outcome and a potential floor outcome. After that, we will discuss what we think is most likely. The idea is to lay out and consider what is possible and then bring it back to Earth and compare that to what is probable. In addition, we will relay potential effects for every scenario on the players’ dynasty values. Now, let’s dive into our first subject: Jahmyr Gibbs.

Rapid Reaction: JT Requests a Trade

Every NFL offseason seems to come with its controversies, and this year’s theme seems to be the “devaluing of the running back position”, as many NFL owners have quietly taken the stance to not pay for the running back position. We’ve seen several running backs voice their displeasure with the current running back market, and it looks like more will step up and speak out. Even the free agent running back market has screeched to a crawl. Running backs like Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, and Austin Ekeler have been highlighted this offseason as backs who have not been given what they are worth. It’s especially troubling when you consider how central they are to their respective offenses.

Late-Round RBs Worth Buying

In startup drafts, I believe it’s best to focus on RBs with contingent value in the later rounds, as it’s much more likely that these backups will hit your starting lineup than someone like Alec Pierce or Cedric Tillman. It only takes one injury for handcuff RBs to catapult into bell cow roles and potentially league-winning roles for your fantasy team. The 70th-best WR or 25th-best TE is much less likely to give you viable productivity during the season; too much would have to go right for them. As an example, Cedric Tillman (the current WR69, according to Bulletproofff.com) would need multiple injuries to the Browns’ receiving corps to see consistent targets in 2023. Even then, it would be unreasonable to expect Tillman to replicate the production of Amari Cooper.

How to Manage the Chaos at Running Back for Dynasty

The running back situation for Dynasty is in a state of utter chaos. Dynasty contenders are shaking in their boots as Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, Austin Ekeler, Tony Pollard and Dalvin Cook are each embroiled in separate contract disputes. There are talks from their camps of hold-outs looming. When in situations like this, I ask myself what would Warren Buffet do if he was in my Dynasty league. Well, I am pretty sure he would be saturating the market with lowball trade offers for Barkley, Ekeler, Pollard, and Jacobs.

Big Money Leagues vs. Small Buy-ins

Welcome back, DFF family! On the docket today, I wanted to discuss Dynasty strategy as it pertains to buy-in size. Dynasty leagues have differing annual dues, so strategy should be tailored to the specific buy-in cost of each league. “High stakes” is a relative term. I consider this to be annual dues of $100 or more. For others, this may be $50, $250, $500…you get the point. However you categorize your small buy-in vs. big money leagues is fine. The purpose of this article is simply to get you thinking about how strategy should change depending on the buy-in requirement each season. Many fantasy owners take the same approach for all the leagues they play in, which is not necessarily wrong, but I choose to go about things differently. Let me explain what I mean.

DeAndre Hopkins

Rapid Reaction: DeAndre Hopkins to the Titans

After dreams of DeAndre Hopkins becoming a member of either the Kansas City Chiefs or Buffalo Bills, we must now face the reality that DeAndre Hopkins will be a member of the Tennessee Titans in 2023. Being from Nashville myself, my news feed has tons of photo edits of him wearing the number 10 jersey in the two-tone blue. Opinions are all over the place as this is one player changing teams that is a massive challenge to evaluate on a dime. An offense centered around Derrick Henry doesn’t present itself as the most wide receiver-friendly offense from a fantasy football perspective. We also have the memories of WRs like Randy Moss, Andre Johnson, and Julio Jones coming to the Titans at the end of their careers to put up minimal production. So much to unpack here with this signing. Not only how the Titans impact DeAndre Hopkins but also how Hopkins impacts the rest of the Titans players.

A Journey into the VORP VOID

The Dynasty landscape is ever-changing and shifting depending on rule changes in the NFL, scheme changes around the league, position groups fading out, and then resurging through youth and the NFL Draft. I noticed a fairly drastic shift in the value of running backs while working through a few Dynasty and Devy startups this off-season.
