2021 Rookie Pass Catcher Comparison Countdown: Part 1

In this series, we are going to do a deep dive into the top 2021 NFL Draft Class’s wide receivers, and see who they compare to historically. We are going to build them out from the standpoint of their physical acumen, their athletic abilities, and then bring it full circle by looking into their college production. Combining these three components we will settle on a final comparison that I believe most accurately outlines each player’s potential range of outcomes in the NFL. We will count down the top-15 pass-catchers with their comparable players as our countdown to the NFL Draft on Thursday, April 29th.

In this edition of the article, we will also introduce the ‘Rotoviz Celebrity Shot’ section. This will be done by using the Rotoviz Prospect Box Score Scout. I will share the most similar player based on their profile and presumptive draft capital.

15. Tamorrion Terry

Physical: Terry measure in at the Florida State Pro Day standing 6’2” and 207 lbs. which equates to a BMI of 26.04. Terry has a similar build to Justin McCareins, Terrance Williams, and Keenan Allen.

Athletic: Terry was very disappointing during his Florida State Pro Day, when many expected Terry to show off elite long speed, he was only able to run a 4.52-second 40-yard dash. Terry jumped just 32.5” in the vertical and 126” in the broad jump. He put up 15 reps of 225 lbs. on the bench. He tested poorly in the short shuttle, posting just a 4.53-second time. Terry’s positive comparable players based on his athleticism are only James Jones and Michael Gallup.

Production: Terry made an impact as a freshman with a below-average Florida State team. He caught just 35 passes but turned them into 744 yards and eight TDs. He finished his three-year college career with 118 catches for 2,221 yards and 18 TDs. He posted a second-season breakout but was very disappointing in his junior season.

Rotoviz Celebrity Shot: If Terry sneaks into the top-100 selections in the 2021 NFL Draft his closest comparison is Sammie Coates with a similarity score of 99 (out of 100). If he falls to the top-100 in the 2021 NFL Draft his closest comparison is still Sammie Coates with a similarity score of 95 (out of 100).

Final Comparison: Terry is a deep threat that lacks top-end long speed. His closest comparable player is the former Cowboy Terrance Williams.

14.  D’Wayne Eskridge

Physical: Eskridge is another undersized receiver from this draft class. At his Pro Day, Eskridge measured in at 5’9” and 190 lbs. which equates to a BMI of 28.06. He has a similar build to Deion Branch, Jacoby Ford, and Andy Isabella.

Athletic: Eskridge showed off elite athletic traits at his Pro Day, starting with his verified 4.3-second 40-yard dash. At 190 lbs. this equates to a 103-speed score. He also tested with an elite change of direction speed, running the three-cone drill in 6.93 seconds and the short shuttle in 4.22 seconds. This is similar to the testing numbers of Mark Clayton, Emmanuel Sanders, Phillip Dorsett, and if we’re stretching it, Brandin Cooks.

Production: Eskridge played both offense and defense until this last season, so his production profile is a bit submerged. The super senior has caught 121 passes for 2,244 yards and 15 TDs during his five seasons in the MAC. He finally broke out as a super senior, dominating the MAC with an adjusted dominator rating of 45%.

Rotoviz Celebrity Shot: If Eskridge is drafted in the second round in the 2021 NFL Draft his closest comparison is Zay Jones with a similarity score of 84 (out of 100). If he falls to the third round in the 2021 NFL Draft his closest comparison is Devin Duvernay with a similarity score of 74 (out of 100).

Final Comparison: Eskridge is a player who was getting top-50 draft spot buzz at the Senior Bowl, however, the buzz seems to have died down since then. Eskridge profiles to be a special teamer at the NFL level, but he can build a full-time offensive role from his work on special teams like Julian Edelman or Steve Smith. Due to his age and size, it is hard to find comparable players who succeeded in the NFL, however, expect Eskridge to play similar to Jacoby Ford.

13. Seth Williams

Physical: Seth Williams measures in at 6’3” and 211 lbs. which equates to a BMI of 26.37 which is prototypical size for an outside receiver. He compares favorably to Michael Thomas, Jordan Matthews, Bryan Edwards, and most similarly Braylon Edwards.

Athletic: Williams tested about as expected at his Auburn Pro Day. He ran a solid 4.5-second 40-yard dash which at 211 lbs. equates to a 102-speed score. He also jumped 37” in the vertical and 124” in the broad jump. He was only able to put up 12 reps at 225 lbs. on the bench, with his physical playstyle we would have liked to see that closer to 20 or above. Athletically he’s similar to Jacoby Jones, Mohamed Massaquoi, and Leonte Carroo.

Production: Seth Williams made an immediate impact on the Auburn offense as a freshman with over 500 receiving yards and five TDs. He broke out as a true sophomore in his second season and finished relatively strong when considering his statistics as a percentage of the anemic Bo Nix-led Auburn offense. Williams caught a total of 132 passes for 2,124 yards and 17 TDs in three seasons.

Rotoviz Celebrity Shot: If Williams sneaks into the top-50 selections in the 2021 NFL Draft his closest comparison is Christian Kirk with a similarity score of 100 (out of 100). If he falls to the top-100 in the 2021 NFL Draft his closest comparison is Sammie Coates with a similarity score of 99 (out of 100).

Final Comparison: Williams is a red zone bully, who fits the Dez Bryant archetype. His closest physical comparison is Braylon Edwards, but closer to Bryan Edwards when considering draft capital he will receive.
