Shough has been around the college game for a while, as evidenced by his huge stat sheets. He joined Oregon as a 4-star and was a member of the 2018 Recruiting Class that featured current NFL quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, and Will Levis, among others. After red-shirting his first year, Shough appeared in parts of 5 games as a redshirt Freshman in mostly cleanup duty to Justin Herbert. Entering the 2020 season, Shough was named the starter of the COVID-19 campaign, and had a mostly forgettable season, deciding to enter the transfer portal with his future prospects at Oregon uncertain.

After transferring to Texas Tech, Shough won the starting job out of the Spring but had his season cut short after 4 weeks due to a broken collarbone. Entering 2022, Shough entered another QB battle, winning again, but battled the injury bug throughout the year. Of note, Shough was healthy for the 2022 regular-season finale, where he passed for a career-high 436 yards, and stayed hot in the 2022 Texas Bowl, winning the gameโ€™s MVP. Shough had the starter job locked up for 2023, but again had his season cut short due to an injury, this time a season-ending broken fibula.

Through injury waivers, Shough was eligible for a 7th season, opting to transfer to Louisville. Able to stay healthy for the entire season, Shough had his best year of production, finishing 14th overall in FBS for passing yards and t-22nd in FBS for passing touchdowns. Shough led Louisville to an 8-4 record, finishing as an All-ACC Honorable Mention and College Sports Communication Comeback Player of the Year.ย

Strengths

  • Arm Talent
  • Processing
  • Maturity

In spending nearly a third of his life playing college football, Shough has experience in 3 different offensive systems. On tape, he shows poise and ability with developed mechanics, and the ability to make any necessary throw. Shough can make off-platform throws at varying arm angles, which represents a unique and refined skill set.ย

Weaknesses

  • Limited Ceiling
  • Durability

By spending nearly a third of his life playing college football, Shoughโ€™s ceiling is really limited. At this point, what you are seeing is what you are likely going to get. Although his injuries were broken bones rather than ligament damage, there are questions about Shoughโ€™s overall durability. Due to this, Shough is sometimes not willing to take a sack and he will force throws under pressure.ย

ATHLETIC TESTING

Shough was one of the few QBs to participate in any athletic testing, and he showed off some mobility by running a 4.63s 40-yard dash with a 1.61 ten-second split, which is particularly impressive given his size. Shough checks the box for hand size, checking in at 9 and ยพ inches.

DRAFT ANALYSISย

nfl

Rapid Reaction to Draft Capital: Great

Rapid Reaction to Landing Spot: Great

To the surprise of many, Shough ended up being the 3rd Quarterback selected and 40th player overall. A fast riser through the Combine and Draft cycle, reports of Shough being one of the most pro-ready QBs were not just rumors, with Shough being one of the favorites to go early in the 2nd round immediately leading up to Day 2 of the draft. All things considered, this is the ideal draft capital for Shough

As far as landing spots, the Saints entered the draft as one of the more obvious QB landing spots with the news of Derek Carr potentially facing a season-ending injury. Many were surprised when the Saints passed on Jaxson Dart and Shedeur Sanders (twice). With new head coach Kellen Moore and new offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier in place, Shough has an inside edge on winning the starting job over his holdover counterparts since he was the choice of this regime.ย ย

FANTASY INSIGHTS

Tyler Shough will now be an intriguing name for your Dynasty Superflex Rookie Drafts. Although he has starter potential due to the current situation in New Orleans, he may have limited chances to break through due to his age. His ceiling is mostly capped, but there is a universe where Shough ends up being the Saints Day 1 Starter. As of today, Shough slots in as a low-end QB3, absolutely worthy of a late 2nd-round or early 3rd-round Rookie Draft pick who may end up being an ideal candidate to sell later in the offseason.ย
