First-Year Failings: The Struggles of Rookie Wide Receivers

I won’t draft a single rookie wide receiver this redraft season. It’s nothing personal against the likes of Hollywood Brown or Andy Isabella.  I just don’t expect them to produce, and I have evidence to support this belief. The odds are stacked against them, and if they do manage to buck the trend and outperform their ADP, I will sleep soundly knowing that I trusted the process over results. Read on to find out why.Playing wide receiver in the National Football League is hard. Like really hard. Shocking, I know. Some incredibly gifted talents at the position flame out in the pros, despite dominating their peers in college. Others make an impact in their rookie season, but those that do usually have a combination of both generational talent and immediate opportunity. But sometimes, receivers just need some time to get used to playing in the NFL. One of the commonly quoted theories in fantasy football is that wide receivers take up to three years to break out. Working off the assumption that this is generally true, then drafting rookie wide receivers in redraft leagues would be, by and large, a waste of draft picks. So are rookie wideouts worth drafting? I decided to find out.The hypothesis was simple – rookie wide receivers rarely match or exceed their positional ADP.While this may seem like a relatively logical, and inoffensive statement, I wanted to check the data to see if my suspicions were correct

Mid-Round Landmines to Avoid

In a typical 12 team league, championships are won and lost in rounds four through six( picks 37-72). In this range, there are plenty of players that have RB1 or WR1 upside in addition to the top quarterback options and some strong, tight ends. There are also some players being drafted in these three rounds that will not help your fantasy team. I will call out three players that I will not be drafting in redraft leagues this year. I’ll give you each player’s Fantasy Football Calculator half PPR ADP, compared that to my ranking of these players.

How Does a Quarterback’s Fantasy Production Impact Team Winning Percentage?

Every year you see fantasy players draft quarterbacks because ‘The team will be passing more’ when the team is losing, but what if I told you this isn’t the way you should be looking at how to draft quarterbacks? Did you know, since the beginning of the 2000 NFL season (606 games), that for each fantasy football point per game scored by a quarterback, their team’s wins for the given season increases by roughly 0.4 wins.

Finding Fantasy Value on Bad Offenses

In the NFL, some offenses are considered to be bad. Some teams employ a subpar quarterback, lack dynamic skill position players or even have both of those issues. No matter the situation, there is still value to be found on these bad offenses. I will provide three examples of these kinds of players.Josh Allen (QB – BUF):Not many expect the Buffalo Bills to be a good real-life offense. I expect them to be one of the worst performing offenses in the league. On top of that, the Bills have four wide receivers expected to get targets: Zay Jones, Robert Foster, Cole Beasley, and John Brown. I doubt any of those receivers will be a usable fantasy option. Also, the Bills boast a crowded and underwhelming running back room consisting of LeSean McCoy, Devin Singletary, T.J. Yeldon, and Frank Gore. All of those players could receive touches, and likely none will be valuable in fantasy. However, Josh Allen could finish as a top-10 quarterback in 2019.

Dynasty and Redraft: A Symbiotic Relationship, Part 2

In my previous article, I discussed how playing dynasty fantasy football could help you win your redraft leagues. I said the two types of leagues are symbiotic, similar to how the cyanobacteria and fungus team up to create the lichen. In this analogy, I thought it that a dynasty league would be the autotroph, since it

Dynasty and Redraft: A Symbiotic Relationship, Part I

In nature, the concept of symbiosis is when two organisms work together for their mutual benefit. This is different from parasitism where one organism is harmed while the other is helped. An example of parasitism is a tick on a dog. An example of symbiosis is the lichen. Cyanobacteria (algae) live in harmony with a
