Rapid Reaction: Marquise Brown to KC

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown has officially signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, and today, we’ll examine the signing’s dynasty implications.

Impact on Marquise Brown

Firstly, let’s address the impact of this move on Hollywood Brown himself. Since Kansas City let Tyreek Hill leave two years ago, they’ve won two Super Bowls, but their offense has been desperate to replace the ability to take the top off the defense that Cheetah provided. They’ve tried to replace this unsuccessfully using the likes of Mecole Hardman and Marquez Valdes-Scantling

Now, enter the Chiefs’ next attempt at taking the top off a defense again: Hollywood Brown. Brown is a speedster who, hypothetically, should be able to provide KC with the downfield threat they’ve been lacking. However, I think this signing benefits everyone around him more than it benefits Hollywood Brown himself.

Going to Kansas City’s vaunted offense led by Patrick Mahomes automatically provided a boost to Hollywood Brown’s perceived fantasy value. However, I don’t see Brown being anything more than he’s already shown us he is in the NFL, which is a capable speedster that never really lives up to his hype.

If I’m a Hollywood Brown owner, I’m either flipping him now, given the increased perceived value, or waiting until all the training camp hype videos begin coming out of KC and his perceived value continues to go through the roof.

Impact on Rashee Rice

The Hollywood Brown signing will have a positive impact on Rashee Rice, as they do very different things. Rashee Rice will remain the Chiefs’ WR1, while the addition of Hollywood Brown’s speed will keep defenses honest and open up more underneath routes for Rice, where he excels.

Rashee Rice is a hold/buy in dynasty right now. Some will see the Hollywood signing as a threat to Rice’s targets, and his perceived value likely took a hit as a result. When you consider that Rice was never going to get the downfield targets anyway, and now he’ll have more space to operate in the open field, I see the signing as a huge boon for Rice, thereby making him a huge dynasty buy/hold.

Impact on Patrick Mahomes

Lastly, we come to the biggest gainer of the Hollywood Brown signing: Patrick Mahomes. Despite winning the Super Bowl for the 2023 NFL Season, for the first time in a long time, we saw weaknesses in the Chiefs’ offense last season. Travis Kelce got injured early in the season and never looked like himself again until the playoffs. Despite Mahomes’ best efforts, his WRs continually dropped passes, and the offense looked dragnet. Hollywood Brown gives the Chiefs and Maholmes the speedster they desperately need to keep defenses honest.

When NFL defenses have to worry about Hollywood as a deep threat, the rest of the field will open up for Rashes Rice and Travis Kelce to operate in the short/middle areas of the field with less coverage. Hollywood Brown gives Maholmes what Marques Valdes-Scantling never could – a legitimate deep threat to scare opposing defenses.

Pat Maholmes has always been and will always be a dynasty buy/hold for me, but this Hollywood Brown signing gives an even bigger boost to his dynasty value moving forward.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I don’t see Hollywood Brown signing in Kansas City having a huge impact on his fantasy value, but I see it vaulting up the fantasy values of those around him. Hollywood himself is an immediate sell, or one could wait for the inevitable training camp hype videos to come out of KC, which will keep the hype train rolling. Rashee Rice and Patrick Maholmes are dynasty buys/holds, as the Brown signing boosts their dynasty values.
