Old Tom’s Dynasty Stash – Week 1

Stay ahead of the curve with Old Tom’s weekly dynasty stash… and potential redraft gems! After all your league mates cash in on their waiver claims, you can sneak in and pick up next week’s potential hot commodities.

Is every one of these moves a dynasty steal? No.

However, lest we never forget that Old Tom firmly believes great dynasties are built upon the shoulders of GM’s who never forget the importance of the now.

Good luck, friends!

Jerick McKinnon

This is an individual Old Tom has been high on from the get-go. However, with such a crowded backfield (Mostert, Coleman, & Wilson) McKinnon becomes an easy one to overlook. Well, my friends, don’t overlook for much longer. In his first bit of game action in over 2 years, Jerick was able to average 8 yards per carry, while also seeing 5 targets. No, 8 touches aren’t something to write home about. However, it’s definitely a start. We know how much this organization loves McKinnon’s potential, which is evident by their continued backing despite all the setbacks. What we may be preparing for, in San Fran, is a sort of a poor man’s Kamara-type role. Continued production like what we saw Sunday just may help in removing the first part of said title usage.

Harrison Bryant

With David Njoku officially removed from the equation for a handful of weeks, one of Old Tom’s favorite dynasty stashes just got a major bump in value. Coming off a tremendous camp, in which teammates voted him the top rookie, Bryant is poised to begin his display of abilities. This take has a whole different light shed on it when incorporated from a dynasty perspective. There’s no question Austin Hooper and his 4-year $42 million contract sits atop that TE depth chart. But, don’t let that stop you from investing in talent when available. This will be Bryant’s job one day. And, while injuries are never wished upon nor predicted by Old Tom, they do happen. Keep an eye on #88 in Cleveland, my friends.

Chase Claypool

It’s one thing when a rookie “dominates” training camp. We all know how coaches like to talk. It’s another thing when he’s built like this generation’s Calvin Johnson, carries decent draft capital (2.17), and is allowed to display his abilities in week 1 with 30% of the offensive snaps. No, this isn’t groundbreaking stuff. But, it’s what redraft owners want to be aware of and dynasty owners want to begin acquiring. Right now there’s a clear divide between the Steelers’ top two receiving weapons and everyone else. A few more games to build upon Monday night’s toe-tapping performance and this Canadian monster should find himself incorporated into one of the league’s most exciting receiving trios we’ve seen in a while.

Tua Tagovailoa

20/30, 190 yards and 3 interceptions. Friends, this is not good. While Old Tom whole-heartedly loves Ryan Fitzpatrick, the reality of the situation is that this statline is the only thing standing between Tua and that coveted starting QB position. It will happen much sooner than we may have originally suspected. And when it does, watch out! Wherever you found yourself placing Joe Burrow, you may as well go ahead and slide Tua into a very similar position. If you find yourself in any form of superflex league, yesterday was probably an appropriate time to make this acquisition. If you find yourself in a 1QB redraft league, I’d feel confident picking up Tugovailoa now and offering my stud QB in a packaged deal, the second young Tua takes over. Play this scenario wisely and you may find yourself acquiring a much-needed skill position player in a future trade.

Devonta Freeman/Lamar Miller

Depending on the depth of your benches, acquiring one or two veteran RBs currently void of a home, might not be the worst move in the world. See, I’m not saying they are Pro Bowl quality players, but Old Tom has always appreciated what Freeman and Miller provided their teams. We’ve already seen what the injury bug can do to guys like Marlon Mack, Blake Jarwin, David Njoku, Le’Veon Bell, and Michael Thomas. To be honest, Old Tom feels like that was a mild week in the light of a truncated training camp and a canceled preseason. With that all said, the reality is that since these types of players weren’t on an NFL roster week 1, they are no longer candidates to receive the vested veteran salary. What does that mean? In a nutshell, there is almost no financial risk for ball clubs to sign them as temporary replacements. Great dynasty moves, on your end? Probably not. Great win-now moves, though? Old Tom could really see that possibility come to fruition.
