Maye and Rattler: First Start Projections

NE QB Drake Maye

I hate to burst some bubbles from the get. But brace yourself for bumps and bruises. I will tell you now: the issue is not Drake Maye. It’s the offensive line responsible for protecting him. He is downright being fed to the wolves playing behind this line. I don’t see any way around it. Maye’s decision-making isn’t known to be great. His goal is to work on fundamentals. I’m not sure this is a very good chance to do that. If he does, look out! There’s an old saying: your QB is as good as your offensive line. This, alone, keeps my expectations at bay. He has wheels and will make plays with his legs. For the most part, I don’t expect any better from him this week and probably this year than low-end QB2. If he exceeds that, he’s even better than any of us can imagine. I can see his role a lot like Denver rookie QB Bo Nix. Brace yourself; I can see a Kenny Pickett rookie-year role. The same treatment Mike Tomlin gave Pickett as a rookie. Not saying he is Pickett. Please don’t get me wrong. Low volume is what I’m imagining with NE and defensive-minded HC Mayo. Hopefully, I’m wrong, but this is what I’m expecting.

If you own Maye, don’t get down on him in Dynasty. This year’s situation just isn’t pretty at all. If Drake Maye is inconsistent and averages something as 13 ppg in fantasy, don’t get down on him. Keep in mind he’s a rookie who was expected to sit this year. The tides have suddenly turned because of bad play from Brisset. If your quarterback play is going to be bad, you might as well let the rookie franchise quarterback drafted third overall get the reps. As Mayo has rightfully decided to do. If Drake struggles, I think more than anything, it’s a great buy window. Hold the line if you own him. Do not sell him at a devalued price. Treat him as NE does. A rookie dual threat, strong-armed QB. A top 3 overall pick. A franchise QB. Also, super young. It’s impressive what Maye has accomplished so far at such a young age. So I’m recommending that if you own Maye, hang on to him if the offer isn’t a can’t say no.  Here’s my warning: nobody wants to hear, but practice patience.

NO QB Spencer Rattler

Now, I’m locked in to watch this intro game for Rattler. Also, I would predict a better game from him than Drake Maye, based mostly on the team and situation. I’m not saying Spencer is better than Maye, not in the slightest. I’m just saying this week, as far as that goes. However, the Saints’ fifth-round pick has a massive opportunity. The thought has me low-key excited. I’m itching to see if he is the gunslinger I view him as.
Rattler didn’t look great at the senior bowl. It’s known his interviews were poor, rubbing folks wrong. He’s short, around 6 feet. He did not test as a good athlete. Those types of QBs usually get drafted on day 3. His recruiting process scared away many. This guy is a QB. Teams want a leader. Maturity is the main concern with The Rattler. The same Rattler we have seen air it out. The kid can sling it. As I said earlier, his situation, as of now, is so much better than Drake Maye’s. The personnel surrounding the young QB is so much more favorable. It’s an entirely different situation. A Kubiak offense (that has struggled the last two weeks), but we saw the upside and potential of this offense the first two weeks of the season. NOLA was eating! You have players such as WR Rasheed Shaheed, WR Chris Olave, RB Alvin Kamara, and opportunist TE Foster Moreau. Also, I think QB/TE Swiss army knife Taysom Hill could be unlocked sometime soon. This offense represents big play potential. They could get tricky. Drake Maye just does not have the honor to play with this type of guys. Rattler seems like he is naturally aggressive. I won’t be surprised if he comes out and throws several deep shots. Maybe his first pass, even. He takes his chances and is risky. Shaheed’s speed makes the thought juicy. They are facing the TB defense, which ATL QB Kirk Cousins threw 500 yards against last week. I’m low-key pumped for Rattler. I won’t be surprised if we get instant production from him. It will not surprise me if he ends up as a high-end QB2 this week. Tons of arm talent and a lot to like with the playmakers he has.

Rattler has these next few weeks to open eyes and even turn heads. He is looking at a pathway to being the Saints QB1, even if this doesn’t happen right away. I also want to mention that I wonder how Spencer’s play this week would affect LV WR Davante Adam’s thinking. If there is a chance you could trade for Rattler, right now is the time. I don’t think your league mate who owns Rattler would take a 3rd round pick for him, not even two 3rd round picks. But if you’re comfortable sending a 2nd round, that may do it for you. I’m not going to advise doing that. But I’m not saying I wouldn’t. If you feel strongly at all about Rattler and know you would like to have him at some point, now is the time. You’re risking eating a second-round pick or winning tremendous value if he hits. We pick and choose our gambles. I wouldn’t fault anyone trading for Rattler. Sometimes, the early bird gets his worm. That’s what you’re doing if you can trade for him before he makes his first start. Hopefully, we can enjoy the show. I really have the urge to talk Spencer into existence. Hopefully, his play will say that instead. Good luck landing The Rattler.
