The college football regular season concluded this weekend, and we now head into conference championship week. As we await the bowl game invitations we can look back on a great season. The incredibly high number of opt-outs this year opened the door for many underclassmen to have opportunities at Power Five programs that they otherwise would not have. There are some storylines that transcend the sporting event; Michael Jordan hitting ‘the shot’, Mike Tyson biting off Evander Holyfield’s ear, and the base hit that rolled right through Bill Buckner’s legs. The game of the weekend will likely be remembered as the shoe toss, but I will remember it as the day that a young LSU wide receiver arrived.

Now that Week 14 of the college football season has come and gone, we have a lot to examine. We saw a few teams fall from the ranks of the undefeated, one of which (#21 Marshall) was shut out. The top four teams in the nation flexed their muscles again, winning in dominant fashion. A couple of Heisman hopefuls made convincing cases to stay in the rankings, as we saw one unexpectedly stumble. The emergency scheduling of the “Mormons vs. Mullets” matchup played out as the game of the season. Sarah Fuller became the first woman in history to play in a Power Five football game, as she kicked off for Vanderbilt. We also saw the record for TDs in a game get matched and nearly broken. Let’s unpack this exciting Week 13 slate of games and check the stocks of some of our favorite college players!
Zachary Evans has been one of the top players in the 2020 recruiting class, but after a lengthy recruitment that finally landed him at TCU, he has emerged as the Horned Frogs’ featured back. Evans stands at 5’11” and 195 lbs. has a body nearly ready for NFL action, and his skill set is emerging as one of the most difficult matchups in the nation. Evans was a five-star prospect across all ranking platforms. Along with having the prototypical running back body type, Evans is a consummate athlete who ran a 4.51-second 40-yard dash in high school and conveyed his elusiveness with a positional best 3.91-second shuttle time. Evans was the top recruit that the Horned Frogs have ever received according to 247 Sports, including Eagles phenom receiver Jalen Reagor, and is the best running back for TCU since LaDainian Tomlinson (online platforms were not ranking high school prospects back in Tomlinson’s day).
The Week 12 slate of games saw a pair of ranked teams fall and a handful of the top teams in the nation get taken down to the wire, only to prevail late in the game. #10 Wisconsin lost a defensive battle against conference foe #19 Northwestern and #21 Liberty saw their game-winning field goal attempt blocked in an upset loss to unranked North Carolina State. On the draft front, many prospects had stand-out games and improved their stocks. While it was difficult to select just a couple of performances to feature, we’ll now review which players increased or decreased their ranks!

Earlier in the offseason, Brown was shooting up draft boards based on his spring testing. It is utterly amazing that Brown was able to bulk up to 216 lbs and run a 4.29-second 40-yard dash. Unfortunately, on November 11 Brown announced that he would be medically retiring from the game of football due to Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is one of those situations that are bigger than football, and, much more importantly, than fantasy football. We wish that Journey has a safe and fruitful future.

This weekend we all got to watch Alabama and Ohio State continue to assert their dominance, as Clemson showed they could win without their all-world QB, despite not playing their best football. Additionally, the Big12 Conference has now effectively eliminated any hopes for one of their teams earning a seed in the college football playoff this season with the twists and turns of a few other top-25 upsets blended in. DJ Uiagalelei, which is pronounced “ooh-ee-AHN-guh-luh-lay”, is a 6’4” and 250 lbs. five-star true freshman quarterback for the Clemson Tigers. According to 247 Sports Uiagalelei was the tenth overall prospect in the class of 2020 and the second overall quarterback. His rating of 0.9949 grades him out as the 24th rated quarterback that 247 Sports has ever scouted. Uiagalelei played high school football for California powerhouse St. John Bosco where he was the starting quarterback for three years. In those three years, Uiagalelei portrayed a mastery of the quarterback position throwing for over 10,000 yards and 127 TDs versus only 11 interceptions. He also added another 1,100 yards and 18 TDs rushing. DJ Uiagalelei is the most prolific quarterback in Bosco’s history owning the record for career passing yards, passing touchdowns, overall yards, and completions; along with single-season records for passing yards (4,223) and passing touchdowns (48) among many other accolades.

The BIG10 conference officially joined in the fun this week, as we got to watch Indiana upset #8 Penn State on the final play, one of the craziest we’ve seen this season. In devy, the name of the game is patience. Did we all want Bijan Robinson to be the guy in week one and get 20+ touches per game? Of course. But, that isn’t always how it shakes out. However, with less than elite competition in the backfield, he should see his touches continue to increase. Remember, Robinson still has two more full seasons to live up to the hype of being the number one running back prospect. Don’t get frustrated with Robinson after three games, as I believe he will be the primary ball carrier by seasons end.

Compared to the previous two weeks, Week Six of the college football season played out relatively similar to what fans expected. There were many unexpected shootouts in the SEC this week, which is unique. However, outside of #21 Texas A&M taking down #4 Florida and an unranked Mizzou team upsetting #17 LSU, the week seemed status quo. Week five of the college football season is now in the books, and although it seems cliché to say this, the weekend brought us even more surprises than previous weeks. We witnessed eight ranked teams fall on Saturday, further muddying the college football landscape before the BIG10, and eventually, the PAC12 teams join the ranks. Let’s discuss some of this past weekend’s player performances and draft stock movement!
As we mentioned in last week’s article, the game to watch this week was an SEC powerhouse matchup between the fourth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs and the seventh-ranked Auburn Tigers. Stetson Bennett got his first win as a starting quarterback behind the strong running of Zamir White and the outside playmaking of redshirt sophomore Kearis Jackson. The Bulldogs ended up rolling Auburn 27-6 that emphasized the rawness of sophomore quarterback Bo Nix. The lone positive takeaway for the Tigers was Cartavious “Tank” Bigsby; the true freshman running back displayed his receiving chops hauling in seven catches for 68 yards despite his rushing troubles against the strong Georgia front.
SEC football came back, and it did not disappoint! The player of the week was Florida’s star tight end Kyle Pitts who put up an amazing stat line of eight catches for 170 yards and four TDs. His junior quarterback Kyle Trask was dealing, he finished the game with 416 passing yards and six TDs, making it clear why he was the preseason All-SEC QB1. The Florida Gators routed Ole Miss 51-35 ruining Lane Kiffin’s coaching debut, though they could not slow down the Rebels’ slot receiver Elijah Moore. The junior receiver had 10 catches for 227 yards against the Gator defense.

We have now watched the fourth week of college football and have again watched this week one-up the previous slate of action. Colossal upsets of #3 Oklahoma and defending national champion #6 LSU by unranked teams have seemingly ripped a hole in the space-time continuum. Additionally, we saw the Pac12 conference follow suit and decide to join the BIG10 in playing an abbreviated football season. The twists and turns of this unique 2020 campaign look to keep us all on the edge of our seats this year, so examine which player stocks were affected as a result of this week’s action.
