DFF Draft Coverage: Kyle Trask to the Buccaneers

KYLE TRASK | FLORIDA                       6’4” 236 lbs.                        3/6/1998 (Age 23)

Kyle Trask was drafted 64th overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

COLLEGE PRODUCTION

Kyle Trask took over as the starting quarterback for Florida as a sophomore when then Gators quarterback Felipe Franks went down to injury and never gave Franks a chance to get the job back. In his career, Trask completed 552 of 813 pass attempts, a 67.9% rate. He threw for 7,386 yards, 69 touchdowns, and just 15 interceptions which equates to a 168.5 passer rating. Trask leaves much to be desired as a rushing threat, he has a total of 54 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 132 attempts. He won’t be boosting his fantasy production with much work on the ground.

Trask went 17-5 in his 27 games played as the Gators starting quarterback. Despite his lack of mobility and rushing upside, Trask has proven himself as a talented and productive quarterback going against the best competition college football has to offer in the SEC.

ATHLETIC TESTING

At his Pro Day, Kyle Trask measured in at 6’4” and 236 lbs. Which equates to a BMI of 27.8. He ran a 5.1 40 yard dash again highlighting his lack of athleticism outside of the pocket. That said, in the pocket is where he excels. He exhibits solid arm strength and above-average precision and accuracy. One of the main criticisms of Trask is that he’s only done it with good talent around him but I’d be cautious in taking credit away due to things out of his control.

Trask does have good pocket presence but he has sloppy footwork at times and below average anticipation which leads to receivers into coverage instead of throwing them open. He can certainly be successful in the NFL but it would likely require that he be drafted into the right system with an above-average offensive line.

DRAFT ANALYSIS

Rapid Reaction to Draft Capital: Above-Average

Rapid Reaction to Landing Spot: Excellent

Tampa Bay is one of the best landing spots for Kyle Trask. While he’s limited by mobility his strengths are based in pocket presence and accuracy, something his to be mentor Tom Brady excels in.

FANTASY INSIGHTS

Trask has been granted the ability to sit and learn from the best. I’ve been steadfast in believing his success hinges on being drafted to the right system with an above-average offensive line, and he’s gotten just that. Bruce Arians will bring out the best in Trask. He won’t be a world-beater from a fantasy perspective but given the time to learn behind Brady, he could produce QB2 numbers a few years down the road when Brady retires but there is always the possibility he’s a perennial backup in the NFL.
