DFF Draft Coverage: Kellen Mond to the Vikings

Kellen Mond | Texas A&M   6’2” 217 lbs.   6/22/1999 (Age 21.8)

Kellen Mond was drafted 66th overall by the Minnesota Vikings, becoming the seventh quarterback selected in the 2021 NFL Draft.

COLLEGE PRODUCTION

Mond took over as the starting quarterback for Texas A&M as a true freshman. Mond accumulated 9,661 passing yards and 71 TDs versus 27 INTs in his four-year collegiate career at Texas A&M. Mond is a capable rusher as he compiled 1,609 rushing yards and 22 TDs in his four seasons.

Mond does not have a single season that stands out as a “breakout” however he did show improvement in every season. He slowly worked on his accuracy bringing his 51% freshman completion rate up to a respectable 63% as a senior. His yards per attempt crept up from 5.6 to 7.7 as a senior. Also, he has started in 46 games, many old school front office heads may favor this over the likes of Mac Jones, Trey Lance, and Davis Mills who have much less experience.

ATHLETIC TESTING

Kellen Mond tested very well at his Texas A&M Pro Day. He measured in at 6’2” and 211 lbs. This equates to a BMI of 26.64. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.59-seconds, which equates to a speed score of 95. This is an elite number for quarterbacks, and he would be comparable to Jalen Hurts, Marcus Mariota, Andrew Luck, and Colin Kaepernick. Mond’s ceiling is up there with the best quarterbacks in the draft, but he is not a sure thing.

DRAFT ANALYSIS

Rapid Reaction to Draft Capital: Not Optimal

Rapid Reaction to Landing Spot: Above Average

Kellen Mond will go to Minnesota to back up Kirk Cousins. Kirk Cousins is an aging quarterback who does not offer rushing ability. Mond could indicate a change of direction in the Vikings’ offensive scheme. Cousins is under contract through 2022, but Mond could become the starting quarterback thereafter. The potential is Mond to Jefferson for the future of Minnesota.

FANTASY INSIGHTS

Mond has a big arm, so he will be a threat to rip defenses apart on deep passes, or tuck the ball and run for first-downs. He throws well on the move, both going right and left. He has much improved his eye discipline over time, keeping his eyes downfield when defenders close down on him. Despite his strong arm, he lacks touch when throwing to different levels, leading to less catchable balls for receivers. He also tends to get tunnel vision on his primary target, something defensive backs in the NFL will feast on if he does not improve.

Overall, Mond has impressive highlights with his ability to rip off beautiful throws downfield or extend plays with his legs. However, his lowlights contain red flags, staying laser-locked on his targets and struggling to pick up pressures. Mond is in the Colin Kaepernick mold with his lean, angular frame, strong arm, and long-striding athleticism. Mond becomes a target in the middle of round two of Superflex leagues as an upside play if you are needy at quarterback and miss out on this class’s top options.
