Draft Stock Watch: Week 3

Each week I will bring you the latest updates and NFL buzz surrounding college players that should prove to be integral to future fantasy success. I will utilize recent statistics, performance and film, and general “front office whispers” to compile the intel I share with you. My hope is to provide you with a leg up on your opponents. You will know which devy players to target in trades and/or in what range of draft picks (both NFL and fantasy drafts) you can expect these players to be selected. If you want to read last week’s article, click here.

This third week of college football brought us action that included 20 games, ten ranked teams that took the field, two upsets of ranked opponents, and several close games that seemed to go down to the wire. Additionally, we learned that the BIG10 conference will play an abbreviated season starting at the end of October. Let’s now discuss some devy player draft stocks as a result of this week’s action.

Another week of college football is in the books, and Week 2 did not leave us disappointed. We have heard the BIG10 officials are meeting to discuss beginning a season as early as October. We hope to hear more on that front in the coming days. Additionally, in the 20 FBS games that were played, we witnessed some of the biggest and best upsets that we may see this entire season. Let’s sift through the aftermath of college football’s Week 2!

Draft Stock Watch Week 1

Draft Stock Watch: Week 1

As this college football season shapes up to be the most unpredictable in memory, it will be as important as ever for devy owners to keep tabs on what is happening. The COVID-19 pandemic has already caused major headaches for the college football landscape, as two Power 5 conferences have already postponed their seasons (BIG10 and PAC12).  Sprinkled in are many high profile opt-outs who have chosen to forego their 2020 season and prepare for the NFL draft.

Every Angle of the Yannick Ngakoue Trade

In what has already been an unpredictable offseason, we have now witnessed a trade involving a big-time defensive star and cornerstone defensive pass-rusher in Yannick Ngakoue. Reports have surfaced that the Jaguars have traded Ngakoue to the Minnesota Vikings for a 2021 second-round pick and a conditional fifth-round pick. That conditional pick could become as high as a third-round pick, pending performances. This is the biggest offseason news to hit the IDP fantasy community since C.J. Mosley took the NFL’s COVID-19 opt-out offer and decided to forego the season.

Parris Campbell: 2020 Dynasty Profile

Parris Campbell finished 2019 with 18 receptions for 127 yards and one TD after appearing in just seven games throughout an injury-plagued rookie season. Credit must be given to the young receiver for battling and playing through a hamstring injury, a sports hernia, and a broken hand, before ultimately falling on the IR with a broken foot. The transition from college to the pro game is widely regarded as a difficult conversion for wide receivers.

Gerald Everett: 2020 Dynasty Profile

While the majority of this profile has been gloomy, Everett is actually my favorite buy-low option at TE in dynasty leagues. The Rams will be facing a number of financial decisions with wide receivers Cooper Kupp and Josh Reynolds, cornerback Jalen Ramsey, safety John Johnson, and Everett all entering the final season of their rookie contracts. The Rams could explore moving Everett in a deal before the trade deadline in an attempt to bolster their pass rush or improve their offensive line.

Jack Doyle: 2020 Dynasty Profile

After an injury-plagued 2018, fantasy owners were anticipating a huge bounce-back year from Jack Doyle in 2019. This did not come to fruition though, as Andrew Luck decided to retire a few weeks before the regular season. After some short-lived early season success, the Colts’ passing attack succumbed to injuries and Jacoby Brissett’s limitations as a passer. Doyle was included in these struggles, as he posted a career-low 59.7 percent catch rate.

C.J. Mosley Opt Out Fallout: Rapid Reaction

The league-altering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have now significantly hurt the IDP world of fantasy football, as a consensus LB2 in C.J. Mosley just became the biggest name on the defensive side of the football to take the NFL’s opt-out alternative to the 2020 season. Mosley joins Patriots’ linebacker Dont’a Hightower and safety Patrick Chung as the only rosterable IDPs to have opted out before the season, outside of deeper leagues. This is a monumental blow to the New York Jets’ defense as well.

David Montgomery Dynasty Profile

David Montgomery: 2020 Dynasty Profile

David Montgomery is a polarizing player for fantasy owners. By all accounts, from a production standpoint, Montgomery had a relatively successful inaugural season. His 1,074 yards from scrimmage and 7 TDs were similar to Le’Veon Bell’s rookie season in which he accounted for 1259 scrimmage yards and 8 TDs. The primary difference was that Bell caught 20 more passes as a rookie. But Monty (71.4%) had a higher catch percentage than Bell (68.2%). Montgomery gathered 889 rushing yards on 242 carries for a 3.7-yard average, while Bell in his rookie season mustered 860 rushing yards on 244 carries for a 3.5-yard average.

Kahale Warring: 2020 Dynasty Profile

Warring fits the specifications of a fantasy football “sleeper” candidate like a glove. He has the willingness and competitiveness to handle run-blocking duties, and the talent to line up in the slot. Versatility is valuable in the NFL. If Warring wins the primary TE job for the Texans, he should be capable of staying on the field for the majority of the snaps. Having just turned 23 this offseason, any role Kahale carves out this coming season should be maintained, with the potential for growth into more opportunities, provided he stays healthy. He can be acquired late in drafts or for very minimal assets via trade in most dynasty leagues, and may even be available on waivers in a few.

Jamison Crowder: 2020 Dynasty Profile

It never ceases to amaze me that the majority of people will continue to buy “brand names” items, regardless of the price. This holds true in nearly all facets of society and even extends to fantasy football. Jamison Crowder is not a brand name item. Crowder played in all 16 games last season, starting 12. He led the Jets in targets (122), catches (78), receiving yards (833), and receiving touchdowns (6). Crowder was also quarterback Sam Darnold’s favorite receiver and served as his reliable safety net time and time again.

Russell Gage: 2020 Dynasty Profile

At first glance, nothing jumps off the page when reviewing Russell Gage’s season-long body of work to this point in his NFL career (or even in his college career for that matter). After shipping off a deteriorating Mohamed Sanu for a 2021 second-round pick in a rare fleecing of New England, the Falcons coaching staff put their trust in Gage to take over the team’s third receiver position. Gage enjoyed a 16% target share after taking over for Sanu, as his average offensive snaps per game increased from 12 to 48. He finished the season with 49 catches for 446 yards and one TD (but in the nine games post-Sanu he had 45 catches for 402 yards and one TD).

The IDP Unseen Series: Part 1

In this series of articles, we discuss some players from each defensive position group that are poised to break out this season. These players should put up a floor of respectable, fantasy starting lineup stat lines with the potential for positional top-15 ceilings. These are players that can be drafted or acquired with minimal draft capital in most full IDP leagues. An examination of the factors promoting these ascending players will take place in each article. Remarkably, there are quite a few players that are among the “IDP unseen,” as of now. We will start with the defensive line.

To Cam or not to Cam? That is the Question!

The NFL’s big news of Carolina Day is New England’s acquisition of former Panthers QB Cam Newton. On June 28, 1776, American patriots rebuffed a British attack on Charleston harbor. The key to success was a remarkably resilient fort built of palmetto logs that repelled cannonballs. Cam Newton and his fantasy football value have been similarly under siege for nearly two years. He has an opportunity to silence critics and achieve ultimate victory with the New England Patriots in 2020.
