2022 (SO) 6 9 134 14.9 3

Mitchell spent his first two seasons playing at Georgia University, en route to their back-to-back National Titles. During his Freshman season, he started 12 of 15 games while hauling in 29 receptions for 426 yards and four touchdowns alongside Brock Bowers, Ladd McConkey, Jermaine Burton, and George Pickens. As a Sophomore, Mitchell battled an ankle injury for much of the year and only appeared in six games, bringing in nine receptions for 134 yards and three touchdowns. He then transferred to Texas University, where he broke out and made a name for himself as a Junior. He earned Second-team All-Big 12 honors, producing 55 receptions for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns (most in the Big 12).

STRENGTHS

An explosive receiver who can play on the outside and excels with elite straight-line speed. Great body control and flexibility, as he can go up and win jump ball situations more times than not. Thrives in his vertical route tree, having his way in digs, posts, and go routes. Superb foot quickness, often showing off against press coverage. He does a terrific job finishing the play with the ball in his hands, as he fights for extra yardage and makes many defenders miss in the open field.

WEAKNESSES

Inconsistent productivity and performance, as he tends to take some plays off. Lacks intensity and allows smaller defenders to mess with him mentally. Doesn’t haul in a lot of contested catches over the middle of the field in traffic. Needs to stay more disciplined in his route running. The tools and abilities are there, but he tends to lose focus too often. Struggles with strength and technique as a run blocker.

ATHLETIC TESTING

At the NFL combine, Mitchell measured in at 6’2” and 205 lbs, which equates to a BMI of 26.3. He ran a jaw-dropping 4.34-second 40-yard dash (97th percentile), equating to a 117.1-speed score (97th percentile). Mitchell also displayed a 135.2 burst score (96th percentile) and a college dominator score of 32.4 percent (62nd percentile).

Mitchell shows elite speed and leaping abilities. His 4.34-second 40-yard dash was the third-fastest amongst the 30 wide receivers in his position group. He did finish with the best broad jump in the group, measuring at 136” to along with his impressive 39.5” vertical. His biggest red flags would be his build (strength) and hand size (9”).

DRAFT ANALYSIS

Rapid Reaction to Draft Capital: Excellent

Rapid Reaction to Landing Spot: Good

Mitchell was selected with the 52nd overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts.

Anthony Richardson gets another top-notch receiver to go along with Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs. Expect Mitchell to split into that WR3 role right away ahead of Alec Pierce. Don’t be surprised if he overtakes Josh Downs as the team’s WR2 at some point during the 2024 season.

FANTASY INSIGHTS

I had a first-round grade on Mitchell, and he was my seventh-ranked wide receiver ahead of Xavier Legette, Ladd McConkey, Ricky Pearsall, and Ja’Lynn Polk. He joins an up-and-coming offense that features Richardson, Pittman Jr., Downs, and Jonathan Taylor.

In your rookie drafts, Mitchell should go somewhere in the second round depending on your position of need. You may need to be patient with him, as Richardson needs to progress as a passer before he can produce multiple great fantasy assets. Pittman Jr. should serve as this team’s WR1 still, but Mitchell has a chance at becoming his second-best pass-catching target soon.
