Waiver Wire Sniping: Week 12

Last year when this series debuted, I wanted to help shed light on one of my favorite tricks in Fantasy Football, Waiver Wire Sniping. The strategy is simple. Without compromising your roster (of course), look to see if you have an available roster spot or a player that you were holding as a possible fill-in for a week that is no longer needed. Then look a week or two ahead and see if any of your current starters are on a bye or have a matchup you want to avoid.

By picking up a streaming option or high-end stash before the weekend action, you can “snipe” that player for free and before that player is featured on podcasts (such as the Fantasy Football Fellas podcast – shameless plug) and waiver articles across the fantasy football world. “Sniping” allows you to eliminate the grueling wait on Wednesday or Thursday morning, hoping your Waiver Wire pick-up isn’t grabbed by another team with a lower waiver priority or more FAAB dollars. If the chips fall your way, you may have a very valuable piece for the low-low price of NOTHING.

Each week I’ll be giving you potential steaming options for the week ahead, some stash candidates that are widely available in redraft leagues and highlighting the tough matchups and teams on bye in the coming week.

Here are some guys that you might not necessarily need for this week but might be high Waiver Wire pickups for week 12.

Week 12 Streaming Options

Baker Mayfield @ CIN (41%) – After a bye, Baker and the Browns will face off against a Bengals defense that has given up the most points to opposing QBs on the year. Baker has been more than serviceable with 18 or more points in 3 of his last 4 games. Mayfield is the perfect bye week fill in for the Mahomes or Goff owner next week.

Lamar Jackson vs. OAK (11%) – As the fantasy football world waits to see if Jackson will get the nod over the corpse of Robert Griffin III this Sunday, smart owners should be adding the rookie QB ahead of his potential starting debut. The great matchups continue for the Ravens in week 12 against the Raiders and continue after that with @ATL, @KC, and TB the following three weeks.

Josh Adams vs. NYG (30%) – The word has gotten out on Josh Adams whose ownership percentage has jumped a ton over the past two weeks. After leading the Eagles in carries last week, the tides could be turning in the young RB’s favor. The Eagles backfield will face off against a Giants defense next week that currently gives up the 10th most fantasy points to opposing RBs and has given up 12 or more points to at least 1 RB EVERY week on the year.

Elijah McGuire vs. NE (15%) – With the Jets on bye this week, McGuire might have slid under the radar for most fantasy owners this week. However, after only being out carried by Isaiah Crowell 7 to 6 last week, McGuire outrushed the veteran RB 19 to 30 and had four targets. Adams might be the better add for week 12, but if you’re looking for a longer term RB stash, McGuire is a solid pickup.

Anthony Miller @ DET (40%) – Miller’s ownership might mean he was already added in your league. Even coming off a big week 10 the Viking matchup this week might have caused owners to stay away. Miller gets that same Lions secondary on Thanksgiving day in Detroit that he just torched so if you need a WR to fill in, now’s the time to add him.

Tre’Quan Smith vs. ATL (23%) – With ZERO targets last week against the Bengals, Smith is a hard player to trust. But if you’re looking for a dart throw, I think the game script will be much better next week for the Saints as they face off against the Falcons who are also giving up the 3rd most fantasy points to WRs on the year.

Chris Herndon vs. NE (7%) – Herndon has been featured on this list before, but if you’re the Jimmy Graham or Kelce owner, the Jets TE could be a nice fill in next week against the Patriots. The New England defense has been horrible against TEs as of late, giving up double-digit fantasy points in standard scoring in four of their last six games.

TEN @ HOU (28%) – There’s not a slam dunk streaming defense next week, but the Titans defense has been solid as of late and has a nice schedule down the stretch with NYJ, JAX, @ NYG, and WSH weeks 13-16. If you add them for next week, they might be able to carry you the rest of the way.

The Stashes – Other players to monitor that might be available in your league.

Deeper League Options: D’Onta Foreman (11%), Jaylen Samuels (11%), Spencer Ware (9%) Ronald Jones (8%)

Shallow League Options: Josh Reynolds (40%), D.J. Moore (37%), Maurice Harris (33%), Dede Westbrook (34%)

Deeper League Options: Robby Anderson (25%), Donte Moncrief (20%),

Week 12 Potential Matchups to Avoid: DET vs. CHI, GB @ MIN, OAK @ BAL

Teams on Bye next week: KC, LAR
