2022 DFF Draft Coverage: Malik Willis

After two seasons as the understudy at Auburn University, Willis made the best decision of his career and transferred to Liberty. He then took off and combined for 5,107 passing yards, 47 passing touchdowns, 1,822 rushing yards, and 27 rushing touchdowns in 23 games played. Willis has all the tools and upside in the world to become a solid starting quarterback in the NFL eventually. He isn’t a guaranteed product, but his ceiling is higher than any other signal-callers in this year’s draft. Willis showcases a rare combination of a strong arm and elite rushing abilities. In today’s NFL, that’s exactly what teams are looking for.

2022 DFF Superflex Rookie Mock 4.0: Round 1

Sports Illustrated reported that over 10 NFL Teams graded Desmond Ridder as a First-Round Talent. Should Ridder meet that expected capital, his dynasty value will skyrocket above 1.12. Landing Ridder anywhere in the second half of your rookie drafts is exceptional value. I would not be surprised to see Ridder valued higher than every quarterback from the 2022 class come this time next season.

NFL Combine: “Does Size Matter?” Quarterback Edition

The NFL Combine officially kicked off this week, beginning with medical testing, team interviews, and of course, in-person measurements. NCAA schools are notorious for exaggerating size (aren’t we all). The combine gives us our first look at true-to-life measurements, including height, weight, wingspan, hand size, and BMI.

Devy Discourses: The Race to 2022 QB1 – Corral vs Willis

The 2022 NFL rookie class is underwhelming. Two of the top-three quarterbacks who were the most valuable 2022 eligible prospects have had their value drop close to nil with Spencer Rattler and Kedon Slovis. The remaining option, Sam Howell has retained his value over time however many, including myself, view him as a limited prospect. The underlying reason for this class being below-average compared to other recent classes is not because every player in the class of 2022 will be a bust. The reason why the 2022 NFL rookie class is underwhelming is that we have too low of a confidence interval on the likelihood of an individual player being a viable fantasy option consistently.

Devy Players of the Week

Junior 6’1 215lb QB Malik Willis broke onto the scene last year, passing for 2,250 yards 20 touchdowns, and adding 944 yards and another 14 touchdowns on the ground. Willis is now off to a hot start in 2021, with 613 yards and seven touchdowns through the air, and 225 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Willis is a true dual-threat QB, and he showed off his rushing ability against Old Dominion in Week 3. The Auburn transfer used his legs to find the endzone twice, rushing for 77 yards, and also throwing for 242 yards and four touchdowns, accounting for six touchdowns total. Willis has the attention of the Devy community thanks to his athleticism and rushing upside.

The Freakiest Athletes in College Football for 2021: Part 6

The Bearcats breakout quarterback is getting first-round hype for the NFL draft, and rightfully so. He provides a tantalizing combination of passing accuracy, completing 61% of his passes for 6,905 yards and 57 touchdowns with elite rushing abilities. This elite rushing ability is highlighted by his 391 college rushes that yielded 1,825 yards and 22 touchdowns. His 6’4” and 215 lbs. frame provide the prototypical NFL quarterback size to go along with his long speed, which is validated by his 4.55-second 40-yard dash spring testing time. He also can make defenders miss in space, as evident by his 4.0-seconds flat short shuttle time. Ridder is a player similar to Jalen Hurts, who will be a fringe first-round to the second-round draft selection, whose stock will skyrocket if given extended NFL starts by the franchise that drafts him.

Devy: Fancy Deep Diving

The 6’0” and 208 lbs. sophomore sure has a great pedigree, although he didn’t get much action in the COVID-19 impacted PAC-12 2020 season. His father, Emmitt Smith, is the NFL All-Time leading rusher amassing 18,355 yards over his 15-year career. E.J. Smith showed off a similar rushing capability as his father did in Texas High School Football, also showing off elite receiving abilities with 114 receptions over his final three high school seasons in Dallas. He is currently being selected outside the top-50 in devy drafts and is outside the top-100 in some of the “big-name” devy site rankings. Smith is a player that I can’t get enough of this offseason, and I can’t wait until the consensus sees his value skyrocket.

Pro Day Round-Up

Today is March 11, 2021, this is important because we are less than a week away from Free Agency. On March 17th we will likely find out where players such as JuJu Smith-Schuster, Kenny Golladay, Aaron Jones, Will Fuller, Curtis Samuel, Corey Davis, Todd Gurley, Marvin Jones Jr., Kenyan Drake, T.Y. Hilton, A.J. Green, and Hunter Henry will land. There are 43 days until the NFL Draft, and in most years we would have the NFL Combine to overreact to, however, as you know the NFL Combine was canceled due to the pandemic. Although we do not get to see all of the relevant players get their testing measurables in the same conditions, we still will get good data from the school’s Pro-Days.

Draft Stock Watch: Week 11

There were not many surprises in the Week 11 slate games this weekend, as the only ranked team to fall was #17 SMU in a close loss to Tulsa in which they led most of the game. Observing the shift in power among the BIG10 and SEC football conferences have proven interesting to watch this season. This past weekend, from an individual performance standpoint, there were a lot of future NFL stars to post strong stat lines, making this weeks’ featured risers a difficult decision. We will now detail some of this weekend’s performances that have prospects rising the ranks and/or tumbling down the proverbial NFL Draft hill.
